Russ Berrie Shining Stars Frog

I was given a Shining Stars Frog, and thought it would be wonderful to name a star after my son, who is in Heaven.However, when I went to the website "" to choose a star and give it my son's name, all I got was a screen stating that Russ Berrie had filed for Chapter 7 Bankruptcy, and the website was no longer available.I cannot imagine the disappointment of children who are given this adorable frog, thinking they can name a star after themselves.As for myself, I couldn't be more disappointed I had pictured myself looking up at the stars at night, knowing that one of them had my son's name.

I paid almost $10 for this frog (and twice as much for the dragon) and we cannot register a star. Apparently shiningstars.com has had an issue with this and they aren't fixing it. I emailed them TWICE and they will not respond. Thanks for disappointing my child!

This is a great learning toy and fun as well.It has a wealth of information that one can learn at any age. I recently bought a Talking Odyssey III Interactive Globe as a present for my daughter to help her hone her geographical knowledge and for its entertainment value.

During the couple of hours we were able to use ours before the wand for locating places on the globe stopped working, I was able to make some observation. The globe is easy to set up and easy to play. There are several skill levels ranging from easy to moderately challenging, and it is fun to race against the timer and compete with one's self or another player.

The games, however, are quite repetitive. Being asked to find Micronesia or The Hague during every third or fourth game somehow loses its novelty. One player may have to hunt all over the globe, which is as it should be, but the next may get five countries in a row, all in Africa, to locate, which is not exactly a level playing field. Apparently the algorithm driving this program is anemic and forgetful.

This replica of the world is itself quite small, so locating cities or tiny countries in crowed portions of Europe or Asia requires squinting and hefting the globe up inches from one's face to try and find Luxembourg or the Vatican City. (But after being asked to find the same locale repeatedly, that deficiency does not matter as much.)

The wand itself proved the fatal flaw in our globe. It simply quite working, leaving the globe to repeatedly squawk "look in the southern hemisphere" or "fly 4,500 meters northwest" even when we were dead on blotting out Guam with the tip of the wand.

We purchased the Odyssey III as a gift for my geography-loving 8 year old son last Christmas. Not only was it a hit for him, but his two older brothers love it as well! Many nights I find them all racing each other in the games. It is used often and still functions as well as it did when we first purchased it! Everyone who comes over loves to play as well. I got this for my 6 year old nephew when he showed an interest in geography.He loves learning about all different countries and I think Odyssey really does a great job teaching you about them.It even plays short clips of music from the country to show you the vast differences in culture.If I had this when I was in my Geography class, I'm sure I would have enjoyed the class a lot more.

80's - Boom Box Centerpiece

I bought one of these "centerpieces" for my son's birthday party. I intended to use it as a centerpiece, but it's so small I had to order a second one and put one on each side of the cake table instead. They looked pretty cool. I like that the foil decor on top is removable, because I replaced it with streams of curling ribbon in coordinating colors to match the rest of the decor. My son kept them in his room without the ribbon as decorations because he loves retro stuff. Overall it was a good buy.

It was small and just lame. It would not stand on its own, even though it was supposed to. Not worth the money.

Great purchase _ good value. A little time consuming to put together, but a really great set. I received this set in excellent condition. The packaging was appropriate and the pieces were in excellent condition. I have arthritis but I did not find it as difficult to assemble as the bunkbeds I also ordered. The set is really cute, very solid for little girl play. Alex Toys Magnetic Artist Easel

This easel was the hit of Christmas for my 18-month-old nephew.The adjustability of the trays, white board, and chalk board is terrific and I hope the easel will last long enough for him to use it for many, many years.The two trays are large and have very well-designed compartments.The paint tray holds four standard non-spill paint cups (from Melissa & Doug or various other brands) perfectly.The lowest height is perfect for an 18-month old.If your child can walk about, s/he is tall enough to use the easel.

Assembling the easel was not difficult just took some time and I am glad I did it before Christmas.There were two real quality issues.The holes drilled into the legs are countersunk on the backside so that the screws slip in nicely.BUT one of the 4 legs had screws countersunk on the wrong side.Luckily I had a No. 10 countersink, but was worried about compromising the integrity of the leg by added drilling.Had I not had the tools, which are not common household tools, I would not have been able to put the esel together, and there would have been no present in time for Christmas.

The four legs you see are 6 pieces 2 sets of HALF legs joined by a hinge at the top and 4 lower legs that join to the upper leg (hope your screw holes are drilled correcly).Because the four legs are not single pieces, the easel is a wee bit rickety and I fearthat over time, with readjusting the height, the easel will become less sound nd a leg with break.

Also, the colorful plastic safety nuts are really bute, but not designed for long wear and frequent adjustability.The threading is just plastic no interior metal threads.One nut was not threaded well and so I used it on the least load-bearing part.I suppose I could find metal nuts when these wear out, but the colored ones are so cute and safer.

My nephew is not rough, but leaned on the trays to reach the top and he is young and experimental.He LOVED to paint brush in both hands going at the same time.Took a small taste or the red paint and also briefly experienced the feel of painting his leg before he discovered that he could make wonderful designs moving the paint on the paper around with his arms and eventually his face.It was great.He was not rough or destructive, just got his whole self into it.For that reason, I am worried that the legs in 2 pieces screwed together in the center and held with a plastic nut will not withstand the passionate way in which he paints.

An easel is an amazing toy for any child.S/he will share it with friends and other siblings.S/he may use it very often.An easel that is adjustable is intended to grow with your child (or children).And so it should be built solidly to last.An adjustable easel that does not make it long enough to need adjusting is pointless.This easel is made OK, just not as well as it should habe been.My easel growing up did not have a white board, was not adjustable, and not as amazingly cute, but it was TOUGH.You would need an axe to break it.

The chalk board is great I recommend getting a box of several-colored bright chunky chalk.Funny how very youg children who have never seen an easel know exactly what it is for.We were are all greatful for the chalkboard he wanted to paint all the time, so being able to guide him to the chalk came as a relief when we were not in the mood for a painted baby and the chalk is accessible to him at any time.He would wander by it, put a toy down, scribble a bit, experiment "drawing" with the eraser through his drawing, and then leave his masterpiece.He would be back in an hour.

All in all, I am thrilled.He loved to color and finger paint, but it was a project to get the supplies out at his age and required 100% supervision.He didn't think to ask to paint or draw the supplies were put away.With the easel (now in their kitchen) he can create whenever.And he does often picks up chalk as he walks by, scribbles carefully, and goas on his way.Art is so good for his creativity and mind and imagination and the easel makes it so much more accessible just a wonderful thing!

I recommend getting a large set (8 10) non-spill paint cups with lids.Theye have color-coded lids and you can pour pint in them and just reseal the cups so it is easy to set up and clean up.Several brushes with thick handles and bristles.Lots of chunky chalk and an eraser.LOTs of washable paint.Extra rolls of paper.I bought a set of Crayola paints, but they were gone quick the way he lays the paint on.I am thinking of buying the large jugs of paint.

OH the easel does not come with a floor mat as depicted, but a large garbage bag does the trick.But the paint washes off floors and everything else very easily anyway.

SO buy and set up well ahead of time in case you get the defects I found countersunk hole on wrong side and bad nut.Fixable, but you may need to get the tools and hardware to fix them,

The plastic screw caps have plastic threads unlike the Melissa and Doug easel with metal threads. The plastic threads strip very easily and we had to glue several cap back on after transporting the easel to my daughter's house. I don't know if we can find any caps to replace them; will see how long this easel last. It was the only easel with a magnetic white board. I emailed the company on Dec 26 and have yet to hear from them. Very disappointed in the caps, this easel may not last if we cannot replace the caps, if you don't need the magnetic white board buy the Melissa and Doug brand.

I purchased this easel for my 2 and 4 year olds for this past Christmas.The price is a bit steep for the quality.Some of the screws would not tighten so we had to find one that we had in the house to hold better.Another has fallen out since then so the chalkboard is not completed secure at this point.Also the bars that go on the sides are both for the right side so we had to put one backward which makes folding up the easel a bit awkward.I don't think the chalkboard is the best quality as the chalk does not show up very well.

I purchased this for my kid's birthday after carefully reviewing the different options on Amazon.It was the most expensive easel but the only one that combined white board, black board and magnetic board.

There are so many things wrong with this item that I returned it to Amazon after a few weeks.

Most of these issues are, in my opinion, related to poor product design.If ALEX TOYS goes back to the drawing board, literally, and fixes these design flaws, they could have a winner on their hands despite the higher price tag.

WOOD FRAME

The whole easel is made of untreated, unstained natural wood. This looked great on paper... but is a horrible idea: any kind of pen or chalk will write on it and the ink from even the most washable pens will stain the wood permanently.Within the first 3 days, the easel was covered in little color marks that are very upsetting considering the price paid.You may not care (after all, it's a drawing easel), but in my opinion this makes it look very dirty and cheap. A workaround could be to coat or stain the whole easel.

TRAYS

The easel comes with two trays: a blue and a red one. They are made of relatively sturdy plastic, but there are only two little holes on the red tray used to attach it to the frame and they are too close to the border.As a result, and unless your kid is old enough to never ever push downward on the dray, it's not a question of if, but just when it will break. Mine broke within the first 24 hours.

BLACK BOARD

Even after having seasoned the black board as indicated several times, I could still not get it to work properly.I'm not sure if it's because it's a low quality board, but the bottom line is that my kid never used it because no amount of chalk will make a drawing contrasted enough to visually stand out.

PAPER ROLL

There's a slit at the bottom of the white board to hold the paper from the roll in place . However, it's not flush with the board, which makes it almost impossible to drive the paper inside of it.I've tried four or five times, each time tearing the paper, then I gave up. This is the biggest defect in my opinion, and something so easy to redesign that it can only mean that ALEX TOYS hasn't tested their product in real conditions.

ASSEMBLY

Not complicated, but very time consuming and frustrating.Depending on the height at which you want to fix the white and black boards, you need to use different size bolts, and the user's manual does a terrible job at clarifying which ones to use.

BOTTOM LINE

I was willing to pay a higher price for a good looking, high quality easel. What a mistake... Ikea's easel (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50021076) is much simpler, much higher quality, doesn't require any assembly, has the same feature (except for the magnetic board) ... and only costs $14.99!

Well, I read some of the other reviews about the chalkboard side of this easel and I should have listened. The dry erase and paint side are AWESOME. I set up the paints/markers in the morning and my daughter enjoys it all day long. As for the chalkboard side, I did what the directions said and more. I used several pieces of chalk and rubbed them horizontially and vertically all over the board, then erased it with a paper towel. I repeated this process 3 times and it's still difficult to write on the board. The board does not grab the chalk. I even used 2 different brands of chalk. I'm thinking about painting it with black chalkboard paint to see if that will work.

Multiplication Bingo Game

My third grade son loves playing board games. When he began learning multiplication in school he was having difficulty and this was an inexpensive way to have fun while practicing the subtraction facts. It has been a huge help and he has fun while he is learning rather than sitting at the table with pencil and paper all of the time.

One thing I particularly like abouot this game is that if your child is having trouble with certain groups of facts (such as multiplying by 7's), you can be sure to call those cards each time to increase the repetition in which they must calculate those problems. One thing I don't like is that for some kids, or kids just beginning learning their multiplication, it is hard to calculate the problems in their head without writing it down and working it through on paper this can be easily solved though by giving them a scratch pad and pencil while they play.

My 8-year-old now gets 100% on her multiplication tests.We loved it.Also, our box was missing a set of cards and the company was easy to deal with.They sent me the missing cards right away.no charge.

Super Mario Bros. Centerpiece Party Accessory

This is a pretty big centerpiece.It came as flattened cardboard cutouts I had to assemble.It wasn't difficult, but I had to provide my own curling ribbon to place around Mario and Luigi.The ribbon doesn't appear in the photo, but it is part of the instructions and the centerpiece does look rather plain without ribbon.When put together, it stands 15" x 11" x 11".The colors aren't as vibrant as they appear online, but it was adequate.It did its job, but I've seen more attractive centerpieces.

These are great centerpieces but takes time to assemble.It is good quality and the kids loved them.Very vibrant!

This sand box is amazing.Considering that the others are the same price, this is, without a doubt, the one to purchase.The leak-proof top, the toys, the natural look of the toy and the shade umbrella all make this unique.

Things to know:

1) do NOT cut the black cord on the outside of the box.This holds the top on and makes it resistant to rain getting into the toy.This is not evident when you purchase it, as the instruction manual is inside the box. (thank you other reviewer for this tip!)

2) The umbrella is a true navy, not black as it appears in the picture

3) get over your dreams of a perfect sand and water table, with the sand in one area and the water in the other.My son loves the sand and throws it all around our deck. He mixes the water in the sand area and vise versa.Let it go, as hard as it is.

(original review: June 5) We purchased this table for our 3 year old daughter and she loves it.It was a smash with all the kids at her birthday party, not so much with the parents of the sand coated kids.My main reason for wanting a table was to prevent killing the grass underneath as a traditional sandbox would. I chose this one because it has an umbrella (which is very stable and adjustable) and because it has a hard cover.The cover attaches very securely thus keeping additional water, bugs, worms, leaves and various other things out...including my daughter, which comes in handy.My daughter is very pleased with the sand/water combo, rather I should say, the sand "in" the water combo. :o) Having a sandbox at her waist level seems to be very convenient for her.She scoots back and forth most of the time but can sit on a little chair and play too.I intend to bring it into the basement in the winter and fill it with rice (uncooked of course) so she can enjoy it year round.The drawback is the legs.They are attached with screws that can easily tear out and are not enough to keep the legs stable.Ours have not torn because I am very watchful of the position of the legs and prop them back up whenever I see them go askew.Other than that, I would highly recommend this table.

(Update: Sept 13) We've had this table for months now and I wanted to make some additional comments.The table is diffucult to move by yourself but I have my 3 yr old help me, she can easily carry the water side as long as there is no water in it.We have also taken this to a couple of family functions to keep my daughter from digging in the dirt or the flower beds, etc.It's quite portable without the water and as long as you make sure the legs are straight and it isn't free floating before you drive off.Another thing that I didn't think of was that because the kids stand to play with the sand, they don't get any sand up the legs of their shorts or in their underpants.Also, the umbrella shades more if you put it very low, just a few inches above your child's head.

WowWhat a wonderful table!I did acres of research on all the different options before buying this one for our youngest child's first birthday present.I'm so glad we bought this onewe couldn't be happier with it.Here are the things we like about this table.

1. Great size.This table is large enough that multiple children can play with it together (some of the ones on the market are really small).BUT, it's not so large it can't be used inside.We've put it in the kitchen on several occasions for the children to play with during nasty weather days.

2. It is heavy and sturdy.My kids have climbed all over it and haven't been able to tip it over.But, it's not so heavy that I can't lift it on my own.I lifted it over the child safety gate (with the sand in it) to carry it out of the kitchen and back to the deck.

3. I like the versatility of the table.You can use sand on one side and water on the other as intended.But, I've put in dried beans or dried rice instead of the water or just a tiny bit of water with some leftover spaghetti noodles and that was fun too.It's nice to do on nasty winter days when the kids can't go outside and are bored with playing inside.I just carry this into the kitchen and it gives them something a little new to do.

4. The umbrella is a nice featureprovides that little bit of shade so that they can play comfortably.

5. GREAT COVERit really does stay put!We've had some strong winds and it's never come off.Also, it usually is out on our deck and the cover has never leaked, even during the worst rain storms.The sand is always perfectly dry.

The ONE and only Con (and it's a minor one): I wish that the umbrella would tilt so that I could move it around to block the shade.Other than that, this is the perfect table!

First of all, we have had this toy for 3 years and it still looks like the first day it came out of the box (in the BLAZING Texas sun). Sure, it's a sand and water table but we've done it all: (1) sand alone (2) water alone (3) potting soil/trowels/silk plants/plastic pots (4) landscaping stones and small tonka construction vehicles (aka "the quarry)--sometimes the small trucks even deliver to the Tonka Mighty and it goes on for hours (5) bubble solution to use with the large wands and even the small and different wands (so that the kids aren't fighting over the tiny opening of a tiny bottle of bubbles that inevitably gets spilled all over the patio) (6) a Mommy-made iceburg (colored blue) on the hottest summer day with dollar store penguins and polar bears--you can even shave the iceburg to make snow (I used a putty knife) and put crushed ice (if your refrigerator makes it) in the water to make it a happier habitat (7) dishwater and play dishes with sponges and scrubbers to play clean-up without making a mess at the sink like they do inside (8) aquarium gravel/toys/plants with pretend fish (9) sand over buried "fossils" (pretend dinosaur bones found at the local dollar store) (10) sand sifters and dirt with various sizes of rocks that I spray painted gold -super fun day! (11) measuring spoons/cups/jugs that teach lessons about volume -pair with bath color tablets to learn about color mixing! (12) Did you know that Little People LOVE to go to the beach? (Off subject, they're also not opposed to a tumble in the dishwasher!) (13) any number of arts and crafts activities that I would rather do outside than inside (making slime, papier mache, etc.) (14) tin pans/muffin cups paired with dirt/sticks/water mud for mud pies (15) sand castles, of course! (16) dinosaurs and various animals add a tremendous amount of play value to your basic sand environment.

Well, that's all that I can remember doing in three years time as I sit here writing this review, although I'm sure there's more. As if all that isn't enough, this table is a great size. No elbowing for more space here. There's room for 6 kids. Yep, one on each end and two on each side. True story.

Do you miss sipping iced tea and reading a magazine or chatting with friends? It can happen again while your toddler plays happily and safely. I LOVE this toy. Can you tell?

Being VERY picky about my purchases, I researched and debated pros and cons of all the sandboxes available,and am very pleased with this one except for the weak legs, which may pose a safety problem as it could collapse on a child. This is a shame because this table is fantastic!Kids play for hours!

This one gets 5 stars for the following:

*Umbrella is a bonus--but take it down if the wind kicks up

*Lid strong & secure keeps kids&cats out. DO NOT cut black ties

*Size and design of the table enables 4-6 kids to play

*Drain works well--drain daily to avoid mosquitos

*Price is reasonable--look for sales and coupons

*Looks nice on the porch, not cheezey looking like most

I found that a sand table is better than sand box because:

**more kids can play together--4-6 can fit and not kick sand

**no sand in the shoes or pants = less sand waste, less mess

**water section adds to the fun--drain it if you want less mess

**only requires half a small bag of kiddie sand

**keep on porch to easily sweep up and re-use spilled sand

**smaller toys = less cost and more use of fine motor skills

I hope the company will fix the problem with the legs on the new models and do a recall with a solution for those of us that own the table already so that no children get hurt. I closely monitor mine right now, but have to fix the legs at least once a day.

First Learning 60 Pcs. Wooden Train Set

Our little boy got this for Christmas, and this was the toy that he went to the most often. I recommend it for toddlers.

bought for my 2 yr olds bday. him and my twin 4 yr olds all play with. pieces are very durable. fits other wood trains sets. get quite a bit of pieces so its a good start for a first set or to add more to your set. worth the cheap price, none of the pieces have broke yet.

The pieces are ok for the price.The set does not stay together well.We have removed the elevated pieces because an adult cannot even use them without them falling.It is fine if you build the entire track flat with no elevation.

My daughter got 99 out of 100 on her 3rd grade multiplication test! I fully credit this learning tool. She loved using it for studying and I believe it helped her over some of her stumbling blocks. I loaned it to my fifth grade son's math teacher. She wanted to try it on some of her students. I highly recommend!

Tolo Toys First Friends Play House

We bought the Tolo Play House with sister, brother, and baby, and several animals as a Christmas present for our granddaughter 5 years ago. She played with it all the time as did her cousin. All the kids who came over to play, loved to play with it too. When her little brother was old enough, he joined right in! Now that they are older, my daughter has saved it as the one toy to keep for visitng little ones to play with. Everyone loves it because of the colors, size, and moveable parts. We just bought the play house, family, and 7 animals for our little great grandson who is turning one today. When he was visiting at Christmas, guess what he played with the whole time! Yup, the Tolo Play House with the family and animals! One of our best buys!

My main complaint is that it isn't a big enough house for toys to play *inside.* I had hoped it would be for this price. It's a fine sturdy house. Pushing things through the door entertains my 20-month-old, and I hope that in a year it will be used for pretend play, but the chances of that would be better if it were bigger.
