I must have looked at 30 of these to buy for a child. I didn't want to spend $50 but didn't want crap, so I got this one. It arrived intact (no broken strings, but be careful taking it out of the box). It is a wood base, but it's just not as sturdy as I would have liked. The motion of the balls doesn't last long, and the balls are not very heavy. There is a Newton's Cradle featured on a flu medicine commercial, and that's what I wanted, but I couldn't find it anywhere. This is OK, but don't think it's going to be what was on your (or your father's) desk 40 or 50 years ago.
You get what you pay for that's for sure and in this day in age that isn't much! They certainly don't make them like they used to! That is not the sellers fault though! It came in great condition and I was very satisfied with the product!
