As of May 2011, if you want to purchase a deluxe edition this is STILL the version to get.The crux are the ridges.Various editions exist that can rotate, but the ridges are deepest on this set. When you're spinning the board around, this is important!I have played with the subsequent version, which definitely has shallower tile slots (read the reviews if you don't believe me).I have also played on the earlier version, and if memory serves the ridges also left something to be desired. At the risk of coming across like a Scrabble elitist, I must say the '80s version also pales aesthetically-speaking to this version. Not so for its successor (the two are much more comparable)--but, again, the ridges make the difference!
I am surprised, frankly, that no one stepped forward earlier to champion this board. If you're going to make room for a larger board like this one, it better not leave anything to be desired.I love it and think you will, too.Enjoy! This product had been discontinued and I regretted not buying it when it first came out, knowing it would be a great scrabble board for the family.I was so pleased on buying it at a good priced USED that it came in perfect condition. The board was everything I thought it would be: easy to turn on its turn table and keeping the pieces in place. The earth colors of the pieces and the boards background was an added delight as the newer boards tend to be childlike primary colors. Before buying I checked reviews on this and other boards and the reviews on this one were spot on.

My mother always had a Scrabble game around, and we played incessantly whether home or traveling.Actually had a car version. When she moved into a residence home, the Deluxe Ebony game went with her and the entire family enjoyed playing with her when we visited.
When we brought her home for her final months, the game was not returned, so we had to find one quickly which was affordable. We looked at our local toy stores and book stores, but none had the nice turn table version which made it easier for mom to play.
Thank you for having this game we played it up until her last week with us.

This is so much better than the old version of Scrabble! The older version has a flat game board, and the tiles were always shifting, and was very annoying when a game player would turn the board. With this version the tiles stay intact, and the game is much more enjoyable.
