My daughter uses this as a place mat, which I guess is not the intended use since the colors of the states are coming off after a couple of weeks of use.I have only used a wet dish cloth to clean it.I am surprised because the quality of other Melissa and Doug products we have far exceeds the quality of this mat.

My kids and I play a learning game with this mat.They get a marshmallow, raisin, cracker, chocolate chip, candy etc for every state that they can identify on the map.

I think having a placemat at the table is a great learning tool. Just think how many times a day and for how long your child will be looking at this placemat, sometimes 3 times a day for 10 minutes at a time. My son plays with his placemat when it isn't mealtime. I purchased the special crayons but I didn't know that you can also use pencils on it too.

The only problem I have with the placemat is that the pictures wear off. I was surprised though that it was as thick of a plastic as it was. I would buy this again.

I would really love these place mats, but we have only been using ours for a few months and many of the states have faded badly.My 2-year-old learned about half of her states using this mat, which was pretty fun, but they cost too much to be replaced 4 times a year.
