Gund Baby Clayton Happi Squirrel 13" Plush by Dena Design

Gund Baby Clayton Happi Squirrel 13' Plush by Dena DesignThis is a very cute squirrel, nice size, and matches the Dena Happi Tree Nursery decor.Love how the back of the tail is a material (same design as wings on Gund Baby Chester Happi Owl Plush). The material gives the squirrel a different look and texture.I do wish the squirrel was stuffed more and not so flat.It is hard to make him stand up even when propping up against a pillow. An accessory piece at the moment since the baby is too small to play with it, but it seems well made.Arrived in good condition.

This toy is as adorable as I was expecting! I can't get over the cuteness. Its also well made and soft and cuddly and much bigger than I was expecting. Well worth the money!

Pickle Ball Diller Set

Pickle Ball Diller SetThe equipment was ideal for those just starting up playing pickleball; the veteran players might question the quality of the paddles. The balls themselves are very sturdy and take a beating; much more serviceable than the old whiffle ball we used in the formative years of the game. The set seemed a bit pricey to me, but I'm a cheapskate and always look for more quality for the dollar. All in all, a good buy with much fun for the family.

Bought this set for an extra activity at a summer camp for kids grades 2nd 9th.

I should have shopped around a little more before purchasing this set. I later found other sets that comes with an adjustable stand for the net for the same price. This set includes a net but you must find a way to rig it up. The balls in this set are the only part I like and are well made thick plastic balls that will take the abuse of repeated use.

The paddles were ok. They look and feel thick and sturdy, although the finish over the wood (some type of varnish maybe) is cracked looking. The paddles do function as they should and after a little practice going over the rules, the kids enjoyed playing pickle ball.

There is nothing really wrong with this set, although after trying it out and seeing what other sets are available, I wish I had purchased a different set.

White Yugioh Magic the Gathering Playmat Play Mat Game PAD MAT 1/16 INCH ThickEven though it says this mat is for YGO and MTG, it is perfect for Pokemon. Easy to draw on with pencil, but extremely hard to erase so draw very lightly. colored pencils work if you press hard, sharpie markers bleed a little so draw light with them too.

What more can I say that the title doesn't?I received the item fast and got exactly what I ordered. Thanks again.

Squinkie Girl Zinkies Bird House Theme

Squinkie Girl Zinkies Bird House ThemeGot it for an 8 year old granddaughter; youngest child in the house. .We gott her several of these Themes: Nature , Sea Coral, Bird House, and Train. It made a great gift and she really enjoyed it and played with it a lot, mixing all the differnt themes. The pieces are very tiny (I mean REALLY tiny). They tended to get lost during play and I would be concerned about a younger child putting them into their mouth an potentiallky swallowing them.I would strongly advise against getting this toy if there are younger children in the house since it poses a severe danger it they should find one of the pieces (a HIGLY likely event) and swallow them. Thus it only gets a 4, othewise it would have been a 5.

Got these for the granddaughters and they have a lot of fun with them.Just be aware they are super tiny easy to lose.

I bought these with the expectation that the squinkies were at least the size of a quarter. They're actually the size of a pencil eraser. Might be fun for an older child but not for a 2 & 3 yr old. Pictures & commercials made them appear MUCH larger than they actually are. The birdhouse is also very tiny.. Totally not worth the money especially since it's a choking hazard to my kids who wanted these for Christmas and now they can't have them. Disappointed and won't buy these in the future.

Jonti-Craft SENSORY TABLE - TODDLER

Jonti-Craft SENSORY TABLE - TODDLERI love the plug with the switch to open it or close it.The wood is a good quality and the perfect height for toddlers. The only con I have is that I wished it was locking wheels. The toddlers tends to also lean on the table. It was very easy to assemble the legs. I also like the lid. We it is closed, we used it as another table.

This water table is the only one to own. It is 100% classroom quality and perfect for any classroom OR HOME! we use it in our home as I run an eco-friendly home childcare so the big clunky plastic ones were not an option. This is beautiful custom made wood, SOLID, durable and fun! PErfect size as it is not to big yet not small! The kids love it! Medieval Knight Dragon Battle Carved Chess Game Set

Medieval Knight Dragon Battle Carved Chess Game SetThe board itself is really heavy. All the pieces are very detailed and are a nice weight--they do not look or feel "cheap". The sides of the board have castle mosaics "carved" into it and the gilt dragons, like the pieces, are extremely detailed and quite lovely. The actual playing board that goes on top is gold and silver with "cracking" to make it look aged/antique. This was well worth the money!

I gave this to my 16-year old nephew and he was thrilled with it. The entire family marveled at the detail and how rich and classy this board is.

I purchased this chess set for my husband and was not disappointed. The only negative comment about the board is it is extremely heavy due to the dragon heads at each corner. This is not a problem for me but should be considered when purchasing as a gift. It is beautiful and the pieces are, indeed, carved to look like medieval knights, Kings, Queens, etc. One 'side' has pieces made to look bronzy and one 'side' has pieces made to look like pewter.

The downside of the purchase is the pieces are made of something resembling plastic so break very easliy. My husband is disabled and soon after I purchased the chess set, he tripped over the leg of the table it was sitting on. The entire board and all the pieces flew into the air and landed on the carpet. Probably 80% of the pieces broke. This was very disappointing. I did not expect them to break that easily and now have to find new pieces so we can play again.

I would recommend this board as long as the purchaser considers the weight of the board and breakability of the pieces.

My 12 year old son and I were in a shop at the Excalibur in Las Vegas when he spotted a medieval chess set very similar to this one priced at $265.I nearly bought it because we were very impressed with the unique detailing; however I was not confident in transporting it back home from vacation. After returning I began my search for the same set and came across this item, and after reading the reviews decided to make the purchase. I could not be happier with this set!The pieces are wonderfully intricate and the board itself is quite substantial and heavy.I would encourage anyone looking for a medieval themed set to order this. The price is fantastic for the quality.Although we have played with this set several times, I would not suggest use by small children as the pieces are more on the fragile/delicate side and would probably not sustain a fall or rough handling.I also purchased a marble and onyx set from Amazon to display in my living room which was also an excellent purchase-giving it the same 5 star rating

Ride the Train Rug

Learning Carpets Ride The Train LC 142I was looking for a rug that could accommodate, trains, cars and boats and this was it.It has vivid colors and is well made.Only thing I would like to add is the size, the seller didn't put that in the description and I would have liked to know it before I purchased it, but the size was what I was hoping for.36"x80"

I saw how excited my 3 year old son got over one of these rugs at a gym daycare facility. We already have the Thomas the Tank table, with a mess of tracks and parts all over, and the Step 2 Canyon Roadway. This carpet is the BEST. My son loves it more than any of the other tracks he has, and it is so easy to deal with. I used to put together Thomas tracks for my son, but chasing a younger 18 month old tot around, I can't keep up any more, so the train table is a mess. The Step 2 Canyon is nice, but it's now our coffee table and we have no where else to put it (was intended for outside but stickers prevent that). The Ride the Train Carpet covers both Matchbox sized cars (in 2-lane traffic) and railway lines too. If want, can roll up small and put in closet. Wish it came with a nylon draw-string bag to put away easily, but don't think we'll be putting up anytime soon. Don't know about durability yet, as haven't had long enough, but lays nice and flat on top of berber carpet.

This rug is nice because of the rectangular shape, allowing more children to play. The other reason we like it is there are plenty of roads and railroad tracks. Most town rugs we looked at had either a railroad or roads, not both. This rug should last a long time.

Puzzle Buddy 5000 Jigsaw Puzzle Mat (Size: 72" X 48") NEW

Puzzle Buddy 5000 Jigsaw Puzzle Mat NEWIt does the job but the felt is fibrous and sticks to puzzle pieces. It makes it difficult to move 3-4 assembled together puzzle units. Because of that I am going to switch the fabric to something smoother. That means I've just paid $40 for a cardboard pipe!! Do you have a fabric store nearby? And your neighbor has a leftover piece of PVC pipe for free? That will work just fine.

this product works well and comes in many sizes. You can have your cake and eat it to.You dont loose any peices and you can take as long as you want to get the puzzle done.

I originally bought the Samsung 60 inch model 7050 from Costco and I was very impressed with the picture and overall quality; I did have issues with the Samsung; like I could not get the Audio Return Channel to work.Since I bought the Samsung we remodeled our theater room and the new arrangement allowed for a bigger display.I have been eyeing the 70 inch sharp I was hesitant to get the larger Sharp because I did not feel I would keep the beautiful picture the Samsung offered right out of the box. When I exercised the incredible Costco return policy I came home with the Sharp Aquos LC-70C8470U and wall mounted this beast on to a brilliant articulating wall mount. To say the least, the entire family was impressed with the size of this thing. It was not that hard to see that the picture was not the quality of the Samsung. The picture looked a bit soft and the color uniformity seemed less than inspiring.Knowing that I had 90 days to test out this new monster I did not waste any time calibrating the set with my copy of the Digital Video Essentials (DVE) HD Basic Blu-Ray disc.I spent a night and the next morning trying to dial this TV in to give it a fair chance of surviving in my home. The following are the values I came up with after calibrating with the DVE Blu-ray disc.I use a PS3 Slim for my Blu-ray player and the video signal goes through my Onkyo 709 receiver. I am not sure if all Sharp displays come from the factory with the same video quality, but if they do, people who buy this TV should try the settings I found to work pretty good. In the end, the picture quality improved. The softness and color was brought back closer to what the Samsung was.I still think the Samsung offered an overall better picture but for now I am close with the Sharp 70 inch and the Audio Return Channel works as it should. The internet apps all work really near perfect.I have stopped using the PS3 and Xbox to access any of the things the Sharp offers. 3D content of the Samsung was superior and the Sharp is not bad either. For those looking for size the sharp will work well after adjusting the picture quality. If 60 inches is big enough than go with the Samsung.

The Sharp LC70C8470U 70in 1080p Quattron 3D LED LCD TV w/ 3D Compatibility delivers a jaw dropping Picture and Theater quality 3D.I really have never been a fan of 3D films.I thought "Hmm... headaches poor picture quality, etc."After seeing Capt. Eo and Honey I Shrunk The Audience at the Kodak Theatre in Disneyland, I wasn't impressed and got headaches from both films which are short in length."This is what I figured would have the same or worse results from a TV and poor 3D effects because of the small screen when compared to a proper theater. All I have to say is that I was pleasantly surprised by the excellent quality of the Sharp LC70C8470U 70in 1080p Quattron 3D LED LCD TV.

I have read complaints about this TV because of the "Soap oprah" effect on the picture when you watch it.Yes when you have all of the enhancements enabled it is going to cause the effect. All you have to do is turn these features off and voila all of these picture problems are gone. There is a reason the TV features multiple image modes.

Insulting the PQ of the TV because you do not know how to setup the picture modes is cheap, read the manual before you give a poor rating to the TV. And if you dislike the TV that much keep in mind that Amazon has a liberal return policy. Here is my personal setup: Bluray and HD channels on my cable box need all enhancements turned off, 480i SD is appropriate for turning on the enhanced modes.A hybrid works well for me when I play PS3

Avatar in 3D, and all of the IMAX films are simply breathtaking.Even Micheal Bay's Transformers: Dark of the Moon looks fab.As a matter of fact only a few Bluray's look bad in 3D, namely Harry Potter 7 part 1, a film that was filmed in 2D and converted to 3D.If you have the cash, buy the Sharp LC70C8470U 70in 1080p Quattron 3D LED LCD TV, you will not be disappointed. My only suggestion is that if you are a Costco member, order it from their website. It is $3199 minus $400 online discount, and free shipping.

As a final note: buy a TV screen protector at least 1/4" Lucite. My 3 year old cratered my last LCD Flatscreen TV by throwing a toy into the screen HARD.I also have read of many people doing the same when they have lost control of their Wii controllers or PS3 Move controllers embedding them into their poor TVs.A 2-3 hundred dollar investment in a TV protector will pay you back in spades if you have a hard object hit the TV.I learned the hard way.

I love almost everything about this tv.The picture is beautiful.Everything worked great out of the box.3D is just as good as movie theaters.I highly recommend it.

My only complaint is that built in internet is just OK.It works well with several built in sites such as Netflix. However, I hoped I could use it like a built-inomputer.Maybe I expected too much.Browsing is difficult without a wireless keyboard/mouse input.Browsing is possible but a lot of content can't be displayed. The good news is that I attached a computer to the HDMI input and it works great.I'm using it now as my monitor.Everything is displayed beautifully.

I was looking to upgrade from sony SXRD 60XBR2, which has been spectacular since 2006.I just felt it was time to upgrade to a large LED Flat screen with 3D (for my grandson :)).Ever since the2012 CES, I had been waiting for the new Samsung UN65ES8000.However, between the horrible reviews of the 60" version and the whole ES line for that matter as well as the fact that a best buy magnolia rep called it their "worst" TV, I gave up on the ES despite how nice I thought it looked aesthetically. That said the Sharp look is also very attractive, encased in a classic black enclosure which looks great with my black Omni mirage speakers.

In my search for the very best, I also came across the Sharp Pioneer Elite.I have seen great reviews of the Sharp Elite TV.I saw it at Best Buy, but they had its own special HD Blu Ray running in a separate area so it was difficult to compare to the others on display.Since I have noticed that the quality of the input makes a tremendous difference in the picture quality it made me feel that they didn't want a direct comparison.I am sure that it is a great TV as the reviews are great, but at a rather exorbitant price. While I could afford the $7000+, I simply couldn't justify the 3X cost vs the lc-70le847u.In fact, the other day I noticed that CNET had reduced the rating of the Sharp Elite from a 5 to a 4 star due to its excessive price and poor value.I'd be willing to pay 50-100% or so more for the ultimate picture, but not 3X.As I was finishing this review, Samsung just announced their UN75ES9000, a 75inch set selling for $9-10K.Looks very cool, but again at what price?Compare that to the top of the line 80 inch sharp (lc-80le844u) with outstanding reviews for under $5K.$9-10K for 5 inches less and shabby reviews for the ES line; are they serious?

Back to the lc-70le847u.All in all, this TV is quite impressive at 70 inches.I have found that the quality of the TV picture is directly related to the quality of broadcast. There are scenes that are as sharp as you could possibly imagine and others where the resolution is simply poor due to the broadcast/camera quality and no TV can make up for that.Blu Ray DVDs are fantastic.Even normal tv looks 3D.On the other hand, I can see the "softness" factor referred to in other reviews, but not enough to affect my overall rating.I bought the Disney WOW Picture calibration disc and have adjusted the picture to a very satisfactory setting. In addition, another reviewer on Amazon provided some very helpful calibration settings which we were much better than the factory settings.I highly recommend you try his settings.

I am extremely satisfied with this TV.I ended up buying this on Sears.com for $2,400 from a Bountii price alert. You gotta love some of the Sears sale prices.I am really glad that I got the extra 5 inches vs. Samsung 65ES8000 and for about $1400 less.If anything, I'd go bigger next time. The sharp has plenty of apps, and I thought that apps would be really useful. We use the Skype app but oddly enough I find that I spend most of my time watching TV programs and Blu Rays on what is after all, a TV.The 3D is great, but some 3D movies are much better than others(Journey to the Center of the Earth is amazing!). One reason I went with the extraordinary value of the sharp was that it didn't obligate me to amortize the value of a much more expensive set over 5-10 years to justify the investment. So I'll monitor the market over the next couple of years, and can buy another set if I choose as technology gets better and cheaper with the money left over.In the meantime I remain very satisfied with this set!

Bought on June 10, 2012, and by 2.5 weeks later the image was broken by a vertical line and completely distorted (see image I posted).Good things I can say about this experience:(1) the tv looked great for 2.5 weeks; (2) the Sharp support people were polite (but not very helpful); and (3) they did replace the tv eventually (but the process took 7 weeks).I hear that the vertical line is a common problem and lots of sets are being replaced, yet Sharp support spent a week having me do useless things to fix it before passing me on to another area that took even longer to determine that the tv would be replaced. The delivery company took another 1.5 weeks to get a tv here, so I missed most of the Olympics. My biggest disappointment is the lack of urgency on the part of Sharp support. The replacement has looked great for 2 days; we'll see if it makes it past 2.5 weeks. The delivery guys said they haven't had to replace one twice, so there is hope.Mr. or Ms. Sharp Executive:With a known defect that is common, wouldn't it have been better to pull the product for retrofit rather than put customers through the negative experience of buying a defective product and dealing with your "half-fast" service department?

Kettler Match 5.0 Indoor Table Tennis Table (Blue Top)

Kettler Match 5.0 Indoor Table Tennis TableReading the reviews prior to buying this table, I figured I was in for a nightmare assembly process. While it did take me almost 4 hours, I didn't think it was unreasonably hard. Maybe they (Kettler) have improved the instructions since the other reviews were written.

Yes, it's a hundred pieces if you count every nut and bolt. And yes, a few washers and bolts don't match their illustrations in the assembly guide, but really there was no question about which ones replaced them... nothing else would fit. And yes, there are only illustrations to follow for the most part, but it was actually pretty easy... I used two pairs of pliers (crescent wrenches would have been better) and two screwdrivers.

It wasn't totally clear to me how to put two braces on at the beginning so I took my best guess and got it wrong. It was a 5-minute fix at most. If I was giving assembly advice, I'd say don't tighten things up until you have the whole thing pieced together. And it helps to have another person hold the table up at one point, for maybe 5 minutes until things are secure again. Otherwise, it's a one-person job.

As for the quality, I'm really impressed with the fit and all... not to sound like an ad, but I guess I would describe it as German engineered (since it is). Nylon washers, specially-designed bolts, and the plastic pieces seem like they're going to last awhile, even outdoors. But I just finished building this thing... how it holds up is a future review.

I bought a Kettler blue top all weather ping pong table in 1996 or so.We use it outdoors but pull it into a garage when we are not using it.The only thing we have had to do is replace the nets as they wear out after a while. The table itself is still like new. This item costs more than some other tables, but if you plan on keeping it for a long time it is worth the difference and then some.

I recently purchased a Kettler outdoor table tennis table (Stockholm)from Robbins Table Tennis. They have rewritten the assembly instructions and offer them on their web-site online.Their instructions are supposed to be a big improvement over the instructions that come with the table. Apparently, assembly instructions from manufacturers are often very poorly written. Also, I have researched outdoor tables and I am convinced that the way Kettler makes their outdoor table is much better than others I have considered.I live in a high humidity area where other outdoor tables do not hold up even when stored in a garage. If you live in a very dry area that might not be a problem.

It took two of us about three hours to put this table together. I would have taken a lot less time were the instructions better worded and illustrated. The finished product is terrific. Its the third table weve bought over the years and this make is our favourite. Previously we paid to have the table put together for a few hundred dollars. What we saved in money we lost in sweat stress and anger. Surely the head of the instructions dept at Kettler could hire a better translator and illustrator!

Want Kettler Match 5.0 Indoor Table Tennis Table (Blue Top) Discount?

The table arrived within one week. It took a few hours to put together, not the most straight forward instruction manual, but if you know what you are doing, it is manageable. Table is very nicely built, solid and sleek looking. The blue color is very nice. We bought the same brand table 10 years ago and have been very happy with it. So when we need to buy another one for our second house, we selected the same one. It can also be used outdoor and tolerate high humidity and heat conditions.

The reason I gave it four star is due to the instruction manual. But otherwise, very happy with the purchase.

Hasbro Whac-A-Mole Game

Hasbro Whac-A-Mole GameMy son has been asking for this game for weeks, so we got it for him for Christmas. I admit, I thought it might be cheaply made, not to mention aggravating just by virtue of the "whacking".

The moles themselves do not pop up. Rather, a light under their helmets go off, as well as a specific sound (for the easy game). For the hard game, it's sound only.

Initially, there is a "sign in" period where you whack the mole that you want to be yours. This tells the game how many are playing (unless you chose the solo game). You are then told to listen for the sound of your particular mole. Each game, the sound is different. It could be a bird whistle, a cat's meow, a dog bark, Duh!, Yoohoo!, Yeah!, etc. You're then told to listen for the bonus sound.

You get a point when you whack your own mole, as well as when you whack your mole when the bonus sound is made. At the end of the game, you're told who won, and how many points each player got.

My son is 6, and is sometimes not quick enough. But this game is great for reflexes, hand/eye coordination, etc. It's a blast to play, and my son enjoys it, too...sometimes even requesting the hard version! (although it's even more challenging for him to play audio only). Because the sounds change every game, it teaches listening skills and keeps the game fresh.

The plastic hammers are really soft, so they won't do a whole lot of damage should your child choose to use them elsewhere! We've banged the heck out of this game so far, and have had no trouble with its performance...it works perfectly.

Highly recommended!

This was a birth day gift for my 3 yr old daughter. It has 3 options to play "solo", "easy" and "hard" (for advanced players). She loved the game! But after an hour of playing the "easy" option, it stopped playing!

It did not fall and she did not "wack" it that hard (afterall the game is supposed to be sturdy). The only option that would play (after 4 new battery changes) was "hard". I'm so sad, I now have to send this gift back to Amazon and hopefully get another.

I bought this toy for my 4year olds birthday. We didn't even have it 3 days and it quit working properly. We replaced the batteries several times, but it still quit working.I returned the item to the store and exchanged it for a new one, but the 2nd one we had also quit working properly. My husband and I were playing with both our children, and none of us were hitting it very hard.We are very dissappointed that a game that costs this much can quit working after a few times.I would not recommend buying this.

Bought this at an outlet for $6 or 8 bucks. The name was vaguely familiar and liked the idea of an action game.We have had no problems for 9 months, still working great. The time element brings out the competative spirit (watch those fingers). My spouce and I play regularly and it has held up fine.It is still a fun break from too many educational toys, and still promotes speed and real focus. Our 4 and 6 year olds cannot play each other because the older one will bully the younger until she just stops.Like every other game, parental involvement is needed (such a pity so many find this a negative). Worth a try for a competative, energetic kid!

DO NOT PURCHASE THIS GAME!!!!

I bought this game for a birthday gift for my 3 year old and after a month it just quit working in the middle of a game.It just got slower and slower until it quit. I tried new batteries and it did nothing. We may have played it five times in the month that he had it.I called Hasbro and they said they would send me a replacement but the game was back ordered and could take several months for me to receive it.My son was crushed that it did not work so I went out and bought him a new one.I decided that when the replacement one came from Hasbro I would just give it as a gift, I mean what are the chances of getting two games that don't work.We played the new one a couple of times the day I purchased it and put it back in the box and up in the closet. We got it out today and only the solo and hard levels work.I changed the batteries and still only had two levels working.Ironically we received the one that was back ordered today and it seems to work fine right now so I was spared having to see him disappointed again.I placed another call to Hasbro and asked them if they had any other complaints or had any recalls on the game I told them this was the second Whac-A-Mole that I have had problems with. They acted like I was the first person with a problem with it.They would not replace this game.I wish that I had read the reviews on this game prior to buying it and I hope my review will discourage someone from buying it now!Do not disappoint your child with this game.

Captain Kara Sloan Warcaster Cygnar

Captain Kara Sloan Warcaster CygnarIf you like a kind of shooty army list, Kara Sloan may be the right warcaster for you. I just got her because of the awesome rifle. But when I brought her to the hobby shop to play my first games... let me tell you, everybody started freaking out about two things. Number One: she has Weaponmaster on a rifle. Number two: her feat is ridiculous when used correctly. She's my first 'caster (didn't get the battlebox) and I must say, I'm quite pleased with her so far.

And if you're just in it for the fun of painting she's a great steampunk mini.

Carrom 425.01 Signature Stick Hockey Table with Pedestal (Red)

Carrom 425.01 Signature Stick Hockey Table with PedestalBought for 15 year old boy (and rest of family).Been using it for over a month and lots of fun. Would prefer if electronic score could b plugged in, but works on 4 AA batteries just fine. Everything else is pefect... Solid construction.... Players move great... Gameplay is fun... Seems very sterdy.

The wiring is frail and poorly designed. Table arrived with broken contacts and scoreboard will not work. The battery operated scoreboard with no wall plug is a design flaw as well. The battery pack just hangs from a thin wire with no way to secure it. The dome is flimsy and overall this item is low quality. the reality is I wish I spent the extra money on a real bubble hockey table, not that 1200 plus in cheap! If you want a serious game DO NOT BUY THIS model.

Risk

RiskI used to hate Risk. A couple of my friends back in high school tried to get me to play a few times and I absolutely hated it. Seriously... playing with little tiny men, cannons, and horses; rolling dice to take over the world? NO thanks! But a funny thing happened. Fast forward 20 years and someone breaks out Risk at a small gathering. Begrudgingly I accept the offer to play, and wonder of wonders, I had a great time! After that night, a small group of Risk fans began to gather once a week to play Risk together. During one of our sessions, we discovered some rule variations in the back of the instruction manual, things like "Commander Roll" and "Capital Conquest" mode. We incorporated these rules and a few others and Risk only got better!

We were all quite excited when we recently saw a commercial on TV for a new version of Risk. It had a fresh new look to it and had new rules for playing that promised to speed up the game. So I bought it. Some of the new rules are the same as the rule variations from original Risk. The new guide book doesn't mention anything about "Commander Roll" but it does have new objectives and a very unique reward system that compliments the objectives. Rewards range from an extra attack dice, extra defense dice, an airfield, a guaranteed country card at the end of your turn, extra strategic maneuver at the end of your turn, and my personal favorite, an extra strategic maneuver at the START of your turn (can you say surprise attack!?).

Visually, the new game board is dramatic. Everything is a little darker but very bold. Gone are thesoothing blue oceans and seas. They're now blood red with subtle stripes radiating from the bottom corner. Most of the countries have remained the same but a few names have changed. There also appears to be a few extra land bridges connecting some territories, which is helpful (unless you reside in that territory!). The playing pieces have changed. Gone are the diminutive soldiers, cannons, and horses. They are replaced with simple flat arrows, a short one indicating one troop and a longer one with three stripes on it indicating, that's rightthree troops. They're roughly the same color as earlier versions of Risk but they are a lot harder to pluck up off the board during skirmishes and I don't think there's enough of a difference between the two arrows. This new version of Risk also has cities that are randomly placed about the board at the start of the game. If you control a territory with a city in it, you get to add a "+1" to your territory count before you divide by 3 to see how many troops you draft at the start of your turn.

Another change I really like is the country cards you receive at the end of your turn (if you defeated a neighboring territory). They no longer have soldiers, horses, or cannons on them. Instead they have either one or two stars. When you have at least two stars you can turn them in for troops. You can also collect as many cards as you want and turn in a larger number of stars for exponentially more troops. (2-stars=2 troops, 3-stars=4 troops, 4-stars=7 troops, etc).

There's a few other minor differences, but overall we all loved the new and improved Risk. I can't say that the game went any faster. It still took 4 of us over 2 hours to finish a game. Granted it was our first time playing this version and it will probably go faster next time. I think that next time we'll add some of our older rules to the mix which will help speed things up. Here's one of our favorites--the Country Card Re-Roll: when you receive a country card for winning a territory, if you later attack the country on the back of one of your country cards, you are allowed to re-roll one of your attack dice on each roll. It doesn't work when defending, but it can really help you overcome the defender advantage. And in case you don't have original Risk and have never heard of the Commander Roll, you must try it at least once! Once PER TURN (not per attack) you are allowed to change one of your attack dice to a six. This is kinda symbolic of your commander being present at that particular battle and helping deliver a more decisive defeat. It's great when you just wanna pop over to a neighboring continent and take one of your opponent's territory so they don't get the continent bonus at the beginning of their turn!

UPDATE: Having played this new version of Risk many times since I wrote this review, I have to say I'm still a big fan! The game does go a lot faster (especially using our rule variations described above) and it's a lot more fun. Still don't like the little arrow pieces presenting soldiers. We still pull out an old version of Risk and use the soldiers, horses, and cannons from it. Parker Brothers: please change the army pieces!

Note: 1. Though I had the opportunity to playtest the prototype version of this game, the following is based on plays of the finished product alone.

2. The prototype version was known as Black Ops. This is the same game with different colors.

Relative to the enormous number of games that have been published, there are a rare few that have enjoyed popularity for fifty years. Risk is one of the rarities. Originally introduced in 1957 (in France) it was published in the United States, by Parker Brothers, in 1959. Since its inception, the game has grown in popularity and is now published around the globe in more than 20 languages. There have been several computer and console renditions as well as a variety of play-by-mail or play by email groups. There are Risk clubs and leagues and even a World Championship held in October of each year.

From 1959 to 1999 the only variation to the classic version of Risk was Castle Risk introduced in 1982. Beginning with Risk Napoleon in 1999 there has been a new variant introduced almost every year. (These include: 2210, Godstorm, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars: Clone Wars, Star Wars the Trilogy Edition, Warriors (the card version), Narnia, Transformers and Express. (This does not include the various versions published either by small/self publishers or the variants published in Italy where Risk has a substantial following.) Each version is different enough from the other publications that no two versions are interchangeable. With the exception of Knizia's Risk Express the only feature that all of the games share is the basic combat system. These are not simply themed games where the play of the game remains the same but a new theme is tacked on; these are unique. The complexity of the games range from the vary basic (Express) to the fairly complex (Napoleon).

I have played the various versions of the game for many, many years (Moses and I even played a few he is a poor sport). Classic Risk was my introduction to the world of sophisticated gaming and what a ride it was. As with so many gamers that have played a substantial number of games of Risk, there are tales to tell, memories of games that will never be duplicated. This is an area at which Risk excels. The game generates a story as you play; it has an initial stage, a middle game and an end game. It is an aspect of gaming that so many other games fail at. The game unfolds as a novel or movie might. Many classic games (Chess for example) posses this trait and there are several modern games that have managed to include it (Diplomacy, Civilization, Imperial, Struggle of Empires, etc.) These are rare games; games that afford the memorable moments.

Another aspect of Risk games is the emotional response generated during the game. Few other games produce this affect. One can play hundreds of other games, that while interesting, fun and challenging, simply do not ignite this fire in the player. Risk does this and does it very well. All Risk players have encountered the normally reserved player that becomes overly aggressive during a match. Though I cannot explain this with certainty, I suspect that it is the result of the simple rules and player elimination in the game. Consider that the rules to most Risk games are minimalist, so basic that even non-gamers can easily absorb them allowing the player the opportunity to concentrate on strategy rather than remembering the rules. When this is combined with the possibility of elimination, the result is a do-or-die game experience. (Add in a dose of testosterone and the mix can be explosive as well as entertaining.)

The final common thread in all Risk games is the nature of the contest itself. Each of the games represents an epic battle of some sort from conquering the world to establishing control over a galaxy. It is this bigger than life theme that pulls so many players into the games. If one considers the theme in relation to that of movies it is simple to see that it is the epic films that are remembered, the films in which good versus evil in some near apocalyptic form is described. When suggesting a film to a friend, which is the most likely topic to interest him/her; world domination or planting fields? Theme plays a significant role in all Risk games.

So what of Black Ops? As I mentioned earlier I have been playing Risk for a long, long time. When I first played Black Ops, I was disappointed; this did not feel like Risk. I deliberately waited to write about the game until I had played it a few more times. First impressions are not always accurate especially in gaming. Since that first game I have played Black Ops a significant number of times; more than any other Risk game this year. Unlike classic Risk with its relatively straight forward strategies, Black Ops is far more subtle without sacrificing the simplicity of the rules set. It has all of the elements of a typical Risk family game. Transformers and Narnia have simple rule sets but lack the depth of Black Ops. This is a game where repeat play will reveal additional strategies and opportunities for play. It is a mix of Mission Risk, Capital Risk and the classic game with a few tweaks incorporated. It surpasses the original in the variety of routes to victory.

Similar to many Eurogames, the set up almost insures that no two games will be alike. Locations for the cities and the objectives will be different in every game. (I can foresee player designed objectives increasing the variety.) Retaining player elimination adds a level of tension to the game that is not found in so many others. In a four or five player game, player elimination becomes a vary viable option for victory. The playing time is short enough that elimination will not result in long periods of wandering about the room; most often, when a player has been eliminated, the game ends. As with the classic version of the game, familiarity and experience are rewarded. The dynamic is such that new players may win but the experienced player has an advantage.

I would be remiss if I did not mention a few of the changes incorporated in this new version. As with many home rules and several of the newer published versions of Risk, moving armies at the end of a turn is not limited to an adjacent space. A player is permitted to move armies along any connected chain of territories. This eliminates the problem of trapped armies and allows for surprise movements. The second and most significant change is with the determination of reinforcements. Cities, capitols, territories, continents and cards are included but the value of the cards has been completely revised. The new method introduces another level of strategic choices. It is a wonderful addition that presents the player with more control but tougher decisions as the opportunities have expanded. It is worth playing for this change alone.

Finally Seinfeld fans will be disappointed to discover that the Ukraine has been replaced with Russia. (Sorry Kramer.)

I have read in several articles that this version of the game will replace classic Risk. Originally I was disappointed believing that Black Ops just wasn't up to the task....I was wrong. While retaining the introductory nature of the classic game this is a far superior version of Risk. It is quicker and offers more `gameplay' without sacrificing the critical elements of Risk family games. Being totally honest, I have not bothered with the world domination version of classic Risk in years. When we play the classic board it is with the 2003 edition of Mission Risk. If I were to devote the time required for the classic game, I would rather play 2210 or Godstorm. Black Ops however, is a game that will come off the shelf often. It is a superb revision of the classic game.

If some version of Black Ops replaces the original it will not only introduce new players to more advanced gaming (as the original did) but may drag in some of the Eurogame crowd. As an introductory game, the variety of player decisions and options far exceeds that of Ticket to Ride or Carcassone and rivals that of Settlers of Catan.

Black Ops is the real deal.

I got this game because I saw all the hoopla about Black Ops risk on boardgame geeks and though the game does not look as awesome its still a blast to play.

The game takes many of the rules from the original risk and twists them just a bit to make the game go faster. For example this variant adds cities to the game and when you draft troops these cities add to your total number of possible troops.

Also you can hold an infinite number of cards, but each of these cards has a number on them and when you think you have collected enough of the cards your turn em all in for a number of troops based on the total of the numbers.

The game also adds rewards and objectives which can range from near impossible to not so bad.

The game is extremely fun to play and I would recommend it to any gaming enthusiast.

If you buy this game thinking it is like the Risk game you used to play years ago, you will be very disappointed. For example, you used to be able to turn in sets of country cards based upon the infantry, cavalry and cannon symbols on the cards and the additional two cards with all three symbols on them. But not in this version. And whoever created the army pieces never played the original Risk with the wooden pieces or the version with the plastic soldiers, cavalry and cannons. The game pieces in this set are tiny and guaranteed to be lost quickly. Its horrible. They could have made it compatible easily, but chose not to.

The 2008 revision of Risk brings the game into the 21st century. The new objective based victory system is a much needed refresh to the classic game of global domination. The objectives make the game go quicker (I finished my first game with a group of friends in about an hour and a half). But don't worry, you can still play a game of global domination if you wish.
