This set is nice looking. That is all that it has going for it.The controller only works about 25% of the time and it is hard for small children to figure out since there are no easy to see markings on it.The engine barely has enough power even with fresh batteries to pull the train up the hill.(Notice in the video they don't show the train going up the hill)The engine can not push the cars up the hill in reverse. The engine basically only works on brand new batteries. After about an hour of use the batteries need to be changed. (very expensive!)The train derails while going around the curves about every 3rd time. The crane that comes with the set is very difficult even for parents to use to grab the cargo blocks it is made for.Any amount of pressure will pull the crane arm out of it's socket. The crane grabber is basically a spring clip that is not designed for small hands to use.Magnets would have worked better.
I contacted Lionel with my complaints about this train set and all they sent me back was an impersonal, computer generated email with a phone number I could call to set up a return/refund.What a let down for my son and I.I can't return it now because he uses the tracks to drive his other cars on and he is too young to understand that we were sold a piece of junk and should get our money back.Bought this train set for my 2 year old niece for Christmas and I knew her daddy would love it as much as she did! He set it up right away and they played with it together all day. I made sure to include 2 sets of 6 AAA batteries since I didn't know how long they would last and didn't want it to be a burden any time soon. As far as I know they are still loving it and playing with it everyday. I do wish I could have purchased the plain Lionel set rather than the Hershey's version since I wasn't too thrilled about the advertising aspect of the branded set but it was out of stock and I was just glad to be able to receive the set in time. Thank You Amazon!
