Canwood Single Pedestal Desk

We read the reviews about this desk posing as real wood (the only parts that are real wood aren't actually visible) and being difficult to set up.We decided to go ahead and get the desk anyway since it had the styling and dimensions we wanted.What a mistake!

This desk took four hours to assemble and, because the pieces are poorly constructed (several aren't squared up), the drawers don't fit well in the desk.Two of the drawers won't even open.I wish we had passed on this purchase!

Many problems with this desk:

1) This item description on Amazon describes this as a solid wood desk.This is NOT a solid wood desk.The top of the desk, the front of the drawers, and the slide board are solid wood.All other pieces are particle board / laminate, including the sides of the desk.

2) It did not come with all of the hardware required to assemble the desk.The assembly kit was missing 7 small wooden dowels and 3 cam screws.Moreover, it was not simply that the screws were missing, it was that they just don't ship the desk with enough.The directions say that 19 of these screws should be included in the package, and they were.The only problem is that 22 are needed to correctly assemble the desk!Of course, I did not realize this until I was 80% into building the desk.Fortunately, I was able to find these parts at Home Depot.

3) I had the desk 98% built.All that I needed to do was insert the bottom drawer into the desk.But wait, it doesn't fit!I look at the problem further and discover that the pre-mounted slide rails that are attached to the sides of the desk to not line up for the bottom drawer.On of them is a full 1/2 inch higher than the other.I am now going to have to remove this slide rail, re-drill holes and hope that I can mount it aligned to the other.If I can't I will be taking a sledge hammer to the desk.

Fortunately, the desk does look good once assembled (assuming I am able to get the drawer installed).

I just finished putting this desk together. Overall, I find it to be just an "ok" product. There are two main flaws that prevent me from rating it better than just "ok":

1. The product is being advertised as a "solid-wood" product, but that is misleading. When the package arrived, I found out that the three large vertical boards in the desk are actually made from particle board, NOT solid pine. This is disappointing since I was specifically looking for a desk made entirely from solid wood to avoid any exposure to outgassing of formaldehyde from imported particle board or fiber board. Hopefully, these boards were really made in Canada with the particles glued together with Elmer's glue or similar and not with formaldehyde-containig glue. But, I'll never know. Canwood might have imported the particle boards from overseas.

At least the desktop and the drawers are all solid pine, which is what made the product (just barely) acceptable to me in the end.

2. The visible part of the desktop and one drawer have a number of blemishes. I think what happened is that during manufacturing all cracks and several rough areas were filled with some filler material, sanded down to get an overall smooth surface, and then a finish was applied. Unfortunately, that leaves quite visible permanent yellow stains on the desktop surface (most likely from the sanding process), which is pretty detrimental to the visual aesthetics of this furniture piece.

Pros: All the included hardware was complete. The instructions for assembly were fairly easy to follow. The end result is a pretty solid desk.

It took me about 3-4 hours to put it all together.

Would I buy it again? No, I'd probably look around some more to find another desk that really is made 100% from solid pine.

Final conclusion: Caveat emptor!
