Wood Senet Game - An Ancient Egyptian Board Game

Wood Senet Game - An Ancient Egyptian Board GameWe had borrowed a Senet game exactly like this one a few years ago. Our kids loved it. I had not been able to find one anywhere until this Christmas. We have played it a lot. Our kids are 11, 8, 6, and 2. All of us, except for the 2-yo, play it. My husband and I both enjoy playing Senet with the kids. It is really a fun two-player game. You toss the wooden sticks like dice onto the table and the way they land decides how many spaces you can move on the board. You can move your pieces into combinations to be safe together or to blockade other pieces from moving. But you can't stay that way too long because you have to keep moving to get all your pieces off the board and win.

The set is a handsome wood construction which includes both a standard D-6 for modern play and throwing sticks for the traditional way of drawing a number (dice as we know them weren't around back in the day, unless you wanted to use knuckle bones).Inspired by the art work uncovered in temples and tombs, the pieces were desined to look just like those used by the pharaohs and their queens centuries ago.

Interestingly, the decor of the set, in later hieroglyphs, are not just random sketches. They actually do have a particular meaning, indicating some research on the part of the designers, which is commendable.

The ancestor to traditional games like Snakes and Ladders and Trouble, Senat is an easy game to learn and each round can take a few minutes or hours, depending on the roll of the dice (or throwing sticks).A fun game while in play, it is also a handsome piece to a room's decor while at rest.

I bought this toy for my little brother from Big Brothers Big Sister for his birthday. He is currently in an all things Egyptian kick.He was very excited when he unwrapped it. He wanted to play immediately. When he pulled the game out we noticed that one of the picture squares was smudged and unreadable.:-(

Great toy, shoddy workmanship

My partner had a Senet game as a child, but had no rules so couldn't play it. This game is very nicely made, and the rules are clear, so we can actually play it. We are still working out strategy, and it is trickier than it would seem at first. It is a fun and challenging game to play.

This is a great game to play with family members!

Even my teen age son enjoyed it...that is saying a lot!

I like the sticks as counters...rather than the typical dice...

sometimes variety is the spice of life...
