An answer for people with upside down globes from Lying tradmark globe company;This mainly helps people fix upside down globes sent by companies like this one with no quality control. If you dont care about learning how to repair a globe and someday you will need to do this if you own any gemstone globe..Dont even bother reading this very very long detailed how too fix upside down globe repair review.
There are many different makes of gemstone globes and each
manufacturer has their own method for mounting the meridian ring to the horizon ring. That
being said, whatever mounting method is used, the basic principles are the same.
By way of explanation, the reason your globe settles with the North and South Poles reversed is
because the stones weigh more than the ocean resin and there are more continents in the northern
hemisphere than in the southern hemisphere. The result is a weight imbalance with the northern
hemisphere being heavier than the southern hemisphere.
The bolts on the meridian ring and mount adjust the friction therefor supporting the globes position.
So If the friction mount between the meridian ring to the horizon ring is too loose the globe will
attempt to settle with the heaviest area at the lowest point. If the friction mount is loose enough
your globe will actually invert.{turn upside down}
The solution is to increase the friction on the mount between the meridian ring to the horizon
ring. Most manufactures use a mount that includes an allen head screw with a jam nut on the east/west sides of the globe. {Not the north/south hex nuts}
First you can attempt to adjust the small jam nuts on the allen head bolts located on the east/west sides of the globe between the meridian ring and the stand. By adjusting these nuts it may allow enough tension to be added so the meridian can be moved to any position and it shall stay, so one can view the desired area on the globe. If the desired tension cannot be attained one must move on to the the next step.
To access the adjusting screw you will typically have to remove the globe from the meridian
ring. The gemstone globe can be damaged when it is removed from the meridian ring.
EXERCISE EXTREME CAUTION WHEN REMOVING THE GLOBE.!!!
I STRONGLY SUGGEST YOU SEEK AT LEAST ONE GOOD HELPER BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO PROCEED!
GET TWO HELPERS IF A GOOD HELPERS NOT AVAILABLE!!!!!!
AGAIN: BE VERY VERY CAREFUL HANDLING THE GLOBE AROUND THE FRAME/RINGS!!!
"RAP GLOBE WITH TOWL AND SUPPORT THE GLOBE BEFORE REMOVING EITHER GLOBE MOUNTING BOLTS"
YOU MAY MOVE THE MERIDIAN MOUNTING RING SO ITS PARALLEL TO THE STANDS OUTER FRAME. TAKE STRING SO NOT TO SCRATCH THE METAL AND TIE THE STRING AROUND THE MERIDIAN RING AND FRAME BUT LEAVE ONLY ENOUGH SLACK IN IT TO ALLOW AN INCH OR SO FOR MOVEMENT OF THE RING. THIS IS TO ALLOW YOU TO REACH THE ALLEN BOLTS TO REMOVE THE GLOBE. YOU ONLY NEED ENOUGH MOVEMENT TO GET THE ALLEN WRENCH OR FINGERS TO REMOVE THE BOLTS.
YOU "MUST" HAVE SOMEONE HOLDING THE GLOBE WHILE BOTH BOLTS ARE REMOVED "SIMULTANEOUSLY". PRACTICE BY PRETENDING TO REMOVE BOLTS/GLOBE A FEW TIMES BEFORE REMOVING THE BOLTS!
WARNING: Do not try this stoned or drunk...
=========================================
1ST} "PREPARE YOUR STRATAGY"."RAP THE GLOBE WITH A SOFT TOWEL ECT?..They really do break and scratch so easy but its your globe so I'm only suggesting! I'm not doing it you are and I hope your sober and not high as warned...lol
2ND} In most stands, the globe is mounted to the meridian ring using a allen bolt and a detachable spacer. When the allen bolt and spacer is removed it allows the globe to move freely and it can drop or bang against the stand resulting in scuffing or even cracking around bolt area of globe.
CAUTION:
{If one mounting bolt and spacer is removed without supporting the globe it can stress the globe at the point where all of the weight is being held by the second mounting bolt. The result can be cracking or splitting on the globe in the area of the mounting bolt}Be very very careful removing allen bolts...
3RD} Once the globe is removed from the meridian ring; you can access the friction
mounting bolt assembly between the meridian ring and the horizon ring. You will need to loosen the
jam nut and turn the screw to increase the tension on the mount. You should balance the tension
on both mounts so that the friction is provided equally as opposed to having one mount provide
all of the friction alone. This will give a larger "wear surface" and will enable your adjustment to last longer before it has to be adjusted again.
Balancing the friction between the two mounts also reduces the chance of over tightening the mount and damaging the stand. Once the desired
tension is achieved be sure to tighten the jam nut in order to hold the screw in place.
ABOUT FRICTION SETUP:
The objective in tensioning the mounts is to reach the point where the globe will hold whatever
position you place it in.
If you tighten the mounts too much it can make it difficult to rotate the
meridian ring or can even damage the stand. If the mounts are too loose then the globe will not
stay in position.
Because the globe adds a significant amount of weight when it is installed in the
meridian ring, you will find that you have to apply more tension to the mounts making it have more friction than is required to hold the meridian ring alone.
The only way I can tell you to make the adjustment correctly is to set the tension,reinstall the globe,and test it for proper operation. Its "TRIAL & Error" !!
Its also why I stated "GET GOOD HELPERS".
If its too loose,increase the tension. If its to tight and the meridian ring is difficult to move,decrease the tesion. But leave room for future adjustments without removing the globe.
Once the adjustment is completed you should be able to move the meridian ring to any position and it should hold in place to allow you to view the globe at the desired inclintation.
4TH final Step} With globe reinstalled tighten "Jam Nut" to hold adjustment setting. TADAAA!Your finished! Enjoy you globe again if you didnt scratch/crack it....
========= My gripe section ========
This was the answer I recieved for an email I wrote a gemstone globe company asking about my globe being loose and flipping upside down. Not this company, however I went to their website asking and wrote 3 emails to no avail. No answer. Notta! ziltch! And since I've read more reviews from the lion trademark globes being upside down shipped new and people recieved no tech support for it I thought I'd help their customers out since Lion Trademark/Unique art whatever they call theirself today obviously dont care too do them.
That said' I've never seen any help like it posted on globe company websites anywere at all. Never could find anything like it while doing searches for help with my globe. Its like a dirty little secret they just dont care to tell us about? I've seen several reviews complaining about this issue on new globes recieved so I would think the globe companies would like to help its customers fix them? I have no idea why its not in help sections on globe sites...Hope it helps someone to get their beautiful globe working great again so they can be proud of it again.... Just dont break it trying!
