Basic Fun Fisher Price Record Player

My parents still have my 30 year old music box record player and it still works great -so we were pleased when someone gave us this new "classic" version as a gift for our boys.It does have a similar look and feel, but if you really want the original be warned that this is not the same toy.Engineering analysis follows below.As a toy though, the kids love it and it is reasonably durable.They will need help operating it when younger but it does give them that sense of tactile control of the music that the original was renowned for.

I was perplexed as to why this needed batteries and why the discs looked different than I remembered though, so I took a closer look yesterday at it:

The original player had a real music box in the record player "head", and the bumps on the discs would strike the teeth of the music box, producing the notes, which echoed in the box chamber.The discs turned via manual wind-up.A brilliant re-imagining of the music box in a record player format, not unlike a real record player in how it worked, and a highly cherished toy.

Evidently someone realized that it was far less expensive to use a 25 cent memory chip and a speaker instead of all those mechanical parts (study though they were), so the new player works as follows:

The record head has four pressable buttons which line up with four ridge positions on the discs

Each disc no longer has "bumps" for notes, but instead simply has a combination of four continuous ridges

The memory chip identifies which disc is being played by the ridges depressing the buttons

The wind-up still turns the disc manually, but all it does is tell the speaker to play while turning.

So, if no ridge being present is 0, and a ridge is 1, then Humpty Dumpty might be 0-1-0-1 while London Bridge might be 1-1-1-0 and so on.Hence the appearance of the discs.

You don't really need the disc at alls just wind it up (so the chip knows the music is "on"), and press the buttons under the head with your fingers to activate different songs.

All of this is invisible to toddlers, of course, but adults may miss the faster and slower variations of the original and be annoyed at having to now use three batteries in what was once a battery-less toy.

I was so excited to see this record player reissued as I loved this toy while growing up.Ultimately, I purchased at at a brick and mortar store after waiting for it to become available through amazon.com.Beware, it is not of the same quality as the original, nor is it as durable.Gone are the music box tines from the original, replaced with most likely a memory chip (if you have the old records, you will be unable to use them with this player).The record player has also stopped in the middle of playing multiple times despite using fresh batteries, and the machine being properly wound.For a better sense of nostalgia, you would be better served finding a vintage one at a garage sale or elsewhere online.

We bought this product for our daughter for her second birthday because both my wife and I had the original as kids.The new product is far inferior to the original and here's why:1) The new product is NOT a music box like the original.2) Because of #1, the new product requires batteries.3) My Aunt still has one of the original products and it has better sound!Yes, 40 years later and the music box sounds better than the cheap digital recording.4) You still have to "wind" the new toy (I won't call it a music box because its not) just to make the "record" spin even though all sound is electronic.5) The switch to start/stop the music has a cheap feel and sometimes doesn't work.Finally......this product costs $29.99 at Meijer so DON'T PAY $59.99 on line!!!!Bottom line, I am returning this product in favor of buying an original on e-bay.Thanks for a ruining another childhood favorite!

This toy is just a cheap knock-off of the original--though the price is anything but cheap at $30.00.It doesn't even have a music box, but instead uses a digital speaker.The buttons under the "needle head"select the tune. Step2 Naturally Playful Picnic Table with Umbrella

I bought this table for my children in an effort to undo the frustration we had with our little table and chair set from little tikes. It was a fine set still have it as a matter of fact its just that the chairs were annoying. Pushing toddlers in, pulling them out, and having the chairs with the kids in them tip over. Sometimes they would disappear into random rooms of the house so the kids can try and reach for things they shouldn't. We got tired of it and was just looking for an easier solution. I liked the look of this picnic table and loved the fact that it was all one sturdy unit. I thought my problem was solved, but in the end I traded the trouble chairs for another glitch.

We purchased the brown version of this table. Just thought it looked nicer. Anyhow, the top of the table is grooved. Kind of like a real wooden picnic table is one that has been in the park a while. It was probably my fault for not thinking ahead of time that this little plastic version of a picnic table would so closely resemble an actual picnic table. The only problem with this is that I was planning on using the table for all general use, including arts and crafts. Remember what it was like trying to color on your paper on a weathered picnic table? All those crumply squiggled lines? Same results apply here. Wish I would have checked further to see if it had a smooth top surface. At the time I just assumed it was.

The table itself is good size. The umbrella is cute and has held up well so far. The benches are ok... not quite as sturdy as i expected but probably right on the mark for the table design. You can't have a 3 foot long bench held up at either end and expect to sit in the middle and not have it sag a little.

Overall Step 2 did a good job with this table. I just wish I had paid better attention or maybe gone and seen it in person before making this purchase, because if I realized then what I do now I would not have bought it. This is mostly because my kids just don't use it. Even if you aren't going to use it for coloring or drawing or whatever it is not functional indoors unless you have a really huge space for it. It's angled and large and just doesn't look or feel like it belongs indoors. We tried. So aside from the occasional meal or snack outdoors this cute little table just doesn't get any attention.

We purchased this picnic table when my son was about 18 months old and keep it indoors. He loved it instantly. He eats the majority of his snacks (and non family meals) at his table. He has also enjoyed it thoroughly as a play surface for coloring, his trains, cars, everything. It's been a full year since we've bought it and it's still in perfect condition.

My husband and I frequently sit with him at the table, as the 4 corners are well supported for even our weight. At his 2 year birthday party, it was full with 6 kids and there was still plenty of room (despite a few kids being 4 years old). When we have friends over to play games, the kids will often play a game at their table. He'll have a sibling in the next month and I expect many more years of use from this table.

My husband assembled it easily (there aren't many pieces). The only drawbacks are the grooved surface is slightly more difficult to wipe clean than if it was smooth. And bowls and glasses do slide easily over the surface (for the occasional oops) though you'll have that with all plastic table tops.

It is larger size (which I like), but is just narrow enough to barely squeeze out the backdoor (normal door width) for the few times we've wanted to use it outside without having to take it apart.

We haven't used the umbrella yet so I can't speak as to its durability.

Price currently listed online is higher than what I paid a year ago at Toys R Us (about $90 plus tax).

This table came much faster than we expected. It was really easy and fast to put together except that the manufacturer neglected to pre-drill a few of the screw holes on the underside of the table. Good thing my husband is handy with a drill otherwise I would have been pretty annoyed (actually I was still annoyed b/c what if I didn't have a drill?). I have 3 kids and they love it and climb all over it. We use it for outdoor lunches and crafts. It could fit 6 smaller kids. The faux wood grain to the top surface makes some drawing and writing difficult for my 3yr old. It is mostly used to prepare mud pies and for this purpose it holds up well. Easy to hose off or use hand broom. Doesn't wipe down so easy due to the raise wood grain. The table is super cute. The umbrella is holding up well even through some really windy days. The corners can hold adult weight. We like and I think it's a good value for the money.

I ordered 2 to replace 15 year old plastic tables I used for daycare. These added to my playroom beautifullly. The seats do have a tendency to bend somewhat, but I can see getting my moneys worth out of these too. The green is more pleasant than the orange blue pink combinations that have been sold in the past. The shipping was practically next day, and free, so I couldn't be happier with this transation. I do warn you the tops have texture to them, so when your kids are running cars across them or drawing, it does make it a little noisy.

I bought this as a for my D&D wizard to use as a miniature. The staff looks a lot like Gandalf's (the grey) in LotR. The quality of the metal itself is solid, and seems built to last. The detail is also impressive given its small size. Some things that bothered me: It was over 5 days late in getting here, which probably isn't anyone's particular fault. However, the staff was bent in the packaging before I opened it (obviously this is the weakest structural part of the piece). It had a lot of room in the box, so I don't believe it was due to any aggressive postal worker. I find this very unacceptable, and had to heat the metal in order to bend it back to it's original shape.

This is a very good quality replica train for this price range. However the cars are long, especially the observation car so they have a tendency to derail even at low speeds. The controller and track assemble easily and the control is simple enough for my 5 year old grandson to operate. The cars might do better on larger radius curves which I might look into. I'm just a dabbler and guess more experienced model rail hobbiests might know how to better deal with the derailing.

I bought this set because both the Engine A unit and B unit had motors.

The track (which includes the roadbed) is easily snapped together and taken apart.

The detail on the engines and rail cars is good.

The controller lets you adjust the speed from a slow crawl to full speed without falling over on the 22" radius curves. A very fine product. As I have only had it a month the endurance quality will be shown in the future.

I just got this train set for Christmas from my wife and kids It is great set to get me started and it was easy to put together and load the trains on the track. This is a nice looking easel, and is definitely sturdy, and it is definitely sturdy. It is so sturdy that an adult will not be able to even make a line on it.I wrote Melissa and Doug to ask what to do about the fact that the chalk board cannot be written on. I received a reply stating that the chalk board needed to be sanded, or primed before your child uses it, so I took it into my shop and first applied the recommended primer to remove that high gloss waxy finish. Well that didn't work, so then I tried a light sanding. Still did not work. Being a little on the obsessive compulsive side, I decided to step up my effort and use a power sander. After all this effort my two year old daughter still can only make a couple of light lines, gets frustrated and quits. As an adult male, weighing 170 lbs I find that I need to use allot of elbow grease to make a few lines on the chalk board. Now my daughter tries to draw on the walls. Very disappointing experience. Go out and get yourselves a vintage easel. Back in the old daysyou were able to actually write on a chalk board. Not like this mass produced " Made in China " junk of today!!!

We were so excited when our order was delivered.My husband immediately layed out all the pieces (be prepared, there are many small screws, pins,)and began to build the easle.Much to our disappointment (and my husbands frustration, it was missing pieces, several! This is a quality control problem. I was a little shocked at just how much assembly is required of this item.

First of all even though two chairs are shown this price is for only one chair.The first chair I ordered had a small crack under the seat.For some reason they use heavy staples and nylon strapping to secure the hardware to the bottom of the chair.It is very tight and I believe this is what caused the crack.I used the included hardware on the first chair.For the second chair I went to my local hardware store and bought regular hardware that used a Phillips screwdriver.The included bolts require an Allen wrench which is included but very frustrating to use. It is much easier if you get the regular nuts and bolts.The instructions are definitely written by a non-English speaking person but it does have illustrations.The chairs are beautiful and are all hardwood. They match my table perfectly.So now that they are assembled I am happy with them .

We bought three of these chairs. They were easy to assemble and look great!They have a nice color and are sturdy.

Square Shooters The first deck of cards on dice

I love this game. I played a couple rounds with some people and it was fun

and unique to play Square Shooters. I also played Rummy using the instructions

in the guide as well as the Square Shooters manufacturers product web site. The YouTube

videos as well as written instructions provide an excellent explanation for the games.

I especially love the card suites represented on the dice.

Fisher-Price: Pop-Onz Pop 'n Musical Big Top

My daughter, 2, loves this toy. It is one of the few toys she goes back to repeatedly. The pieces pop on and off, can be stacked end on end, moved all about, etc. She likes the circus music and it only plays for a short while. The only downside is I wish there were more animal pieces rather than odd connect pieces. Either way, I buy her add-on pieces whenever I find them ... she just loves to pop them on and off and build with them.

My daughter received this toy for her 2nd birthday.I usually have to get her started playing with it by making up a story that we use to "build" the circus town.This will get her imagination going to play on her own.We also have the starter pack with blocks and characters -I recommend purchasing it to have more pieces to play with.

Any toy that makes music with no shut off is no toy that I want at home.While this is colorful and durable, it is hard to tell what the individual pop onz pieces are for.They aren't the kinds of components that a child can easily recognize and then utilize for pretend play.For instance there is some kind of piece that is supposed to represent a water barrel, but it looks so non descript that it is hard to identify how to play with it.The only quality that appealed to my daughter and her friends who played with it, was that it makes music when you touch it in the slightest manner.This is the very same quality that is annoying to the adult members of the household.This toy, thankfully we didn't purchase ourselves because we are selling it at our yard sale soon and we know that we will take a beating on the actual retail value.Oh well.

Sportcraft 48-Inch Playmaker Foosball Table

I purchased this foosball table because 1.) right size (48") for my space, light enough for an adult to lift and move, and 2.) extremely low price(I purchased this at a merchant other than Amazon. Sorry Amazon). The table was not difficult to assemble owing to extremely well written, clear instructions with diagrams, but it does require time.The quality is pretty good for the price, nice level field, good grips, good quality rods that move freely. It has provided many hours of fun for myself and my children (ages from 14 to 21). There are dead spots during play, but I believe this problem can be remedied by purchasing a better quality, slightly heavier ball, since the balls provided with the table are unusually light. The legs and other pieces are constructed of some type of composite board, but I could not expect wood for this price.This table is not to be confused with a high quality tournament table, but for anyone with space constraints who does not want to spend a lot, this is a nice starter table.

The quality of the table is good for the prize but it feels to light. The ball is very small and light comparing it to the standard 32-36mm and 24g balls. It seems it does not follow standard measurements. Also the players feet are not flat on the sizes making passing the ball between players almost impossible. the size of the rod is not common its a 1/2" rod. It is still fun to play if your not trying the get control of the ball as if it was a tornado table, but I was expecting a bit more.For the prize it was a good deal, I will probably sand the players feet to get better control.

This is the first item I have bought from Amazon and wanted to run EZ track and Life Like track together. I have 2 EZ track that just do not fit well at all with the Power Link adaptor. It appears the inside rail on the EZ track is a couple of mm to short and seams to sit high causing derailments and yet the remainder of the EZ track fits neat and smooth with the Power Link adaptor. Operation with this track works well and am happy with purchase.

This is a must have product if you use the power loc Life like track for hobby it works really well to adapt any other track and or accessories to the life like trac. This is the reason I chose Power loc over bachmans ez trac because these are the only ones that offer an adapter for their track.

DC Universe Infinite Heroes The Spectre

This figure is part of Mattel's 3-3/4" scale DC Universe: Infinite Heroes action figure line.The line brings a variety of characters from the rich history of DC Comics to stores as simple smaller-scale toys.The figures are the same scale as the popular Star Wars and Marvel Universe action figures, but their simplistic design offers limited posability.

I was interested in this Spectre figure because the Infinite Heroes line encourages buyers to build their own superhero team.I know next to nothing about the character of the Spectre, but I wanted to diversify my DC collection.I'd seen the Spectre in pictures from Golden Age comic books (including being seated with the original Justice Society of America) and I liked his old-school costume.He seems to have a cool 1940s look to him.Ashen skin with a green hooded cloak, gloves, shorts, and boots.Very mysterious.

As it turns out, this particular action figure is the recent Crispus Allen version of the character.I wouldn't know any better, and the costume looks pretty much the same as always, but there's one big difference that is hard to make out in the product images: the figure has a gray goatee.

I don't really mind the facial hair, but the Spectre that I'd seen in pictures was clean-shaven and the beard caught me by surprise.But it's not a big deal.The Spectre still makes a nice addition to my modest collection.

This Spectre figure has articulation in the knees, hips, elbows, shoulders, and neck.The shoulder joints in these DC figures are ball & socket joints, providing the greatest range of motion (and a nice touch).The hood and cape are one rubbery piece and, I believe, can be removed if you try hard enough.

The figure is made of a durable plastic and should withstand normal playtime action.The Spectre comes with no accessories, so no small pieces.The toy should be fun for kids with imaginations and a nice addition for DC Comics fans.

While this small size of The Spectre seems pretty ordinary, it is enjoyable to have in a collection.The color of the figure and is bendable portions make this quite a contribution worth having.

Tabletop Air Hockey Game

Well I got this product the other day and noticed that it was to heavy so i replaced the 1.5 AAA batteries with1.5 watch batteries and it works pretty well. Though if the plastic rim gets on little ding in it all the air escapes and its no good.

I love air hockey.Got this excited to set it up on a ping pong table.Worked great for 2 minutes!Very happy.Then it fell off the table and hit the floor.Still ok.But leery.Fell off again and hit the floor.That's it.Killed it.So IF you get it 1. Use only where if it falls off it is cushioned by nice ,thick carpet.2. Figure out a way to tape sides to a table so it doesn't fly off the side.

Fisher-Price Loving Family Grand Dollhouse

After researching many dollhouses in the internet, I decided on purchasing this one as my daughter's first dollhouse. Although I really liked some other houses that were made of wood, they were too expensive. I thought this was a better buy to see if she would get into playing with dollhouses seriously.

Keep in mind that there is a bit of assembly when you receive the box The house is together, but you have to put all of the exterior trim on and the staircase.

My main disappointment with the house is that I thought it should have come with more furniture to start. It only came with the basic family (mom, dad & twin babies), a kitchen table set with 2 chairs & 2 booster seats.Thank goodness I wound up buying the extra furniture sets (bathroom, parents' bedroom, nursery & mini van). For the price, i think they should have at least included the kitchen appliances.

Also, I found that one of the folding doors in the back does not readily latch and keeps popping open when transporting the house. And the staircase gets in the way it blocks 1/2 of the first floor! (I just leave this loose so it can be taken out easily)

Finally, why didn't Fisher-Price put in a doorbell that makes sound?! That is one of the most requested items on the house from my daughter. She would love to have a doorbell!

Oervall, this is a very durable, quality product from Fisher-Price and I think it is an excellent 1st doll house for this price range.

My parents bought this for our daughter (who will be 3 in February) for Christmas. It was love at first sight! All the room sets, which are purchased separately, have A LOT of realistic detail to keep my daughter playing independently for long periods of time. Although the house is big, it folds up neatly and even stores some pieces inside.

Depending on where you purchase the house, you get different bonus furniture (we got BBQ, picnic table, swingset, slide, casual dining table set). However, all houses come with mom & dad and, most importantly, twin boy & girl.

After seeing the prices of the room sets, I suggest you shop at Wlmrt to get a much better deal. The room sets my daughter likes most are:

living room (has "working" TV...batteries included)

bathroom

nursery (changing table plays music, includesdouble cribs, etc. for twins)

home office

This was a gift for xmas for my 2yr old daughter. it was brand new purchased at toys r us. All of the furniture and dolls advertised on the box to be included were not! The 3rd floor balcony also was not included in the box. Luckly we had purchased a few accesory sets to get started or we would of had a very disapointed little girl!

I called FP and they said they would send out the pieces, instead they sent 2 babies and an awning. I called again and they said they no longer have the balcony or furniture. My daughter loves her house and is not aware that the balcony is missing since it was never there to begin with but I am very disappointed with the situation, I basicly purchased her a shell of a house and were stuck with it.

We made the best of it and still play, the house is loved by my little girl, she plays with it every day thats why I gave it high star ratings.

Missing parts aside, my complaint with the actual functions of the house is that there is no door handle inside to close the door, that makes it difficult to be the one answering the door, but visitors come over again and again, and she manages to let them in and out, even if her fingers get stuck between the door frame and the door.
