Starcraft: The Board Game

Starcraft: The Board GameThis game is based on the Starcraft computer game.As such, it does a great job of modeling the concepts and gameplay of Starcraft in a tabletop environment. It uses a combination of game tiles, figurines, cards, and cardboard chits to represent the Starcraft game.

If you don't have an experienced player to guide you, plan on taking a whole day to learn this game.Once everyone knows the game, plan on 2-3 hours per game.

The game is of quality construction almost all the Starcraft units are represented with plastic figures, along with cardboard punch-outs representing things like planets and buildings, and finally sets of cards that represent technology, random events, and unit combat power.

The basic board consists of laying down 2 planets per player, with a starting base on 1 planet.Planets are connected, but require a transport to move units between.Planets have areas on them, each area either has crystal, Vespene gas, or conquest points players struggle to control. You will build, move, research, and battle in order to achieve victory later in the game.

Though it takes time and a lot of reading, the rules are logical and consistent, so once you start understanding the phases of a turn and the subtleties of the rules, you begin to appreciate the amount of strategy available just like in the computer game. You can try to rush, expand, build mass air, turtle up.A lot of the computer game concepts translate quite well into the board game.

Even the real-time nature of the game is modeled in the game.Players take turn laying down "order" tokens on planets.Nobody knows what each others orders are, but the orders on a planet stack up, and during the execution phase, the orders are revealed one at a time.In this way, an element of interactive surprise causes you to adjust your plans on the fly based on what someone else just did.

Battles are resolved by pairing attackers and defenders figures, and using cards for each pairing to represent health & combat power, as well as any special bonuses that might come from researched technology. Thus battle is sort of a mini card game. There is an element of luck here, in that at any given time you will only have a subset of cards in your hands to use in combat, but all players can shapetheir hand and add more powerful cards to their deck as the game progresses.

The game has some nice touches, like modeling cloaking and detection, and including special units like the Zerg queen or Protoss Archon, and the Terran nuke strike.

The learning curve is steep, but once you get through a couple turns of play, you really start to feel like the game is incredibly deep with lots of strategy options.

This game is much more complicated than any other game I have played (e.g. Settlers of Catan), but this ends up providing much more strategic depth then other games.Recommended if you like deep games in general, and Starcraft in particular.

This is one of the best strategy board games I played. Unlike Risk, battles are not resolved by dice throws, hence there is no chance involved at combat time. Instead it takes a card game approach, you resolve the battle by playing the cards in hour hand. The element of chance is still there, but it occurs earlier, when you draw the cards, so at combat time you already know what you are holding.

It takes about two hours to learn by reading the book, and about 45 minutes to explain the rules properly to someone else. A game takes about 3 hours. I highly recommend it to any hardcore strategy gamer or Starcraft nut, but also to casual strategy gamers, if you don't mind feeling a little geeky moving little plastic figures around :) .

The only problem is the plastic figures, which are very detailed, are a little fragile (some of them came broken, or with parts missing). I would have liked them sturdier, even at the expense of some detail.

It's what you'd better be if you're going to play this. It comes complete with a 48pg. full color instruction book, which you will need and may in fact need to read more than once, especially if you're new to this style of board game. If you have trouble sitting through the short game of "Monopoly" this isn't for you. I'd be more willing to put it on a level with "Risk" as far as the amount of time you invest in it and the number of pieces, but there are no dice, and it takes a little getting accustomed to. Not a game you want to get the kid (or adult) with a short attention span). As long as you're willing to put the time and love into it, it's worth it. Just remember, it's not the PC game either fanboys but when the power's out and you need your "Starcraft" fix it's got enough friendly faces to get rid of the shakes. As far as my durability score goes, all of the unit pieces are made of a rubbery plastic, but as you may know a number of the units are flying creatures and in an attempt to be super cool looking, these units are mounted on a clear acrylic base. It does look super cool, however about seven (not really a lot considering there are 180 unit pieces) came to me snapped off of their pedestals. I was a bit disappointed, but with some super glue and a bit of patient matching (it's not just a board game it's also a puzzle. Bonus!) you can hardly tell now.

Players: 2-6

Learning Curve: Very High

Setup Time: 30-45 minutes

Play Time: 2-5 hours

I had just got back from BlizzCon '08 and decided to make this purchase through Amazon. The game here is much lower than retail and lower than it was sold at their convention ($80)!Game has a *very* high learning curve, as it took myself and some friends well over an hour just to get a good idea of how a single turn played out.:oAside from that, it is a very nice game.

I think it's also good to note that Fantasy Flight's customer service is amazing. One of my air-unit pieces (Arbiter) was broken in two spots and I wasn't able to easily reglue it.After calling Fantasy Flight, they quickly sent me new pieces of all the parts that were damaged, even those I felt looked okay after a little glue!(A scourge, battlecruiser and arbiter pieces)

I would recommend getting storage containers or something of the sort for all the different pieces as the box provided does not have any means of organizing all your cards, tokens and figures provided.

While this game does take more time than playing ~3-5 games of actual Starcraft (as most of my friends will quickly point out), it is very well made and the creators spent a lot of time making a very authentic and unique board game. For being such a big fan of the franchise, I had to get this product and would recommend any other fan of Starcraft or other Fantasy Flight games do the same!

Want Starcraft: The Board Game Discount?

Basically:

1) Pieces will arrive broken.Pieces will break during the course of play.

2) The game is overpriced.I'd be happy with a $40 price tag.

3) The entire package makes it difficult to transport; I used my own tupperware to store the pieces, which makes the box unusable... otherwise you'll lose pieces.

4) It's fun, and perfect for ~4-5 nerds with lots of patience and smack talk.6 is cramped, and 3 is boring.

5) It's NOT fun, and awful for most everyone else. This will not appeal to casual gamers or those without unusual attention spans. It's surprisingly subtle for a game based on a frenetic click fest.

Melissa & Doug Deluxe Magic Set

Melissa & Doug Deluxe Magic SetNine year old daughter wanted a magic kit, so I purchased this one. The kit has a lot of amusing tricks and a great amount of items for the money. The items are well made and hold up to a lot of abuse, after seeing it I would think this kit would cost a lot more. Some of the tricks are silly, but some are actually very good. All the tricks are easy to understand and perform. My daughter has even done several tricks for her class at school. She has been thrilled with it and I have been very pleased. I would recommend this kit to anyone. Hope this review helps.

Santa brought this for my 6 year old (who had been making up her own "magic shows")and she loved it. Some of the tricks were too complicated for her, but she was able to manage many of them with some adult help. The items are of high quality compared to other "magic show" kits that we looked at.

I purchased the Deluxe Magic Set for my daughter for her 11th birthday. This is a very good set of tricks. The tricks are fairly easy to master, and entertaining to watch her perform. Many of the tricks are quite good! Many of the tricks will stump even the most observant adult audience!

The items in the kit are sturdy and should hold up well for many, many magic shows that I know will come.

I highy recommend this kit...so does my daughter, she loves it.

We have been shopping for a beginner magic set for my son for about six months now, and had trouble finding one that didn't look like a bunch of cheap plastic and paper tricks that wouldn't last a week in our house. Some kits claimed to have 50-100 tricks, but really they were the secrets to the tricks and no real props. We also weren't interested in paying $40 for a DVD and a few dimestore props.

At Christmastime, I gave up.There were some nice kits for older kids/adults, but for beginners it was dismal.Come February (birthday month) I looked again, and gave up.Luckily as I was leaving the last store I planned to visit (at closing time the night before his birthday), I saw the Melissa & Doug set off in a corner.

The box was beautiful! It reminds me of the old Victorian parlor magicians. And I can't say enough about how great it is to be able to buy wooden toys that are durable and will last. And all of the pieces are painted nicely with Egyptian themes and exotica, adding to the 'atmosphere' of the show.Bonus to the fact that my son had just been to The Tomb and was interested in pharaohs and hieroglyphs!

I think it's perfect. My 8 year old son loves it and was able to do all of the tricks right after I demonstrated them to him.He did them for the adults, and with the exception of two of the simpler tricks, they were quite impressed and they couldn't figure out how it was done. The two best tricks even caused some actual jaw-dropping!He was overjoyed to be able to see grown-ups astounded, and thought it was hilarious that they couldn't figure out how he did it!

I would suggest the company add a good strong clasp of some sort to hold the box closed when not in use, but that is all I would do to improve on it.

I also loved the format of the instructions, with the aged, burned parchment effect of the paper, and the fact that every trick/prop was illustrated on the bottom of the package so you knew exactly what you were getting, plus you could see most things the way it was packaged.

Another work of art from M&D.

Little Tikes Endless Adventures Tikes Town

Little Tikes Endless Adventures Tikes TownOkay, I have seen playhouses come and go, but this is by far the best one I've ever seen!Kids love to role play and this playhouse has limitless opportunities for interactive role-playing!Each wall of this playhouse has a different theme: One side is a schoolhouse/firehouse wall (they give you decals to make it either or), one side is a gas station complete with gas pumper and crawl through tire tunnel, one side is a sports wall which comes with a basketball hoop, soccer net, 4 targets and a sports ball (what a deal!) and the last wall is a grocery store wall with a pretend ATM/bank, too!My child loves to pretend to play school one minute and then the next thing you know he is over on the other side of the playhouse pretending that he is out for recess at the sports wall. This playhouse is seriously loaded with features!I couldn't find a better value for my money! You would be depriving your child of their imagination if you didn't get this playhouse!Plus the inside is loaded with features as well. There isn't enough room for me to go on about all of the wonderful features!

We bought this for our 2 year old son as a Christmas Gift.We can't wait to see the look on his face in a few days. It's very solid construction and should stand up to years of use.The walls have different shapes/objects molded into them, some of it quite detailed, but it's all the same color. So my wife and I purchased some plastic paints at a local craft store and painted some of the objects on the walls to add more detail and realism. It was cheap and and easy, and the results speak for themselves. We painted the fruit on the store wall, along with the ATM etc.On the inside my wife painted the globe, the books, the tools hanging on the wall, along with the bank safe and the tire.It looks very cool now. This house doesn't have any sound effects or lighting, so I purchased a wireless doorbell and battery operated light at Home Depot. The total cost for the paints and electronincs was $25 and was easy to do.Rather than spending the extra $100 for more detail and electronics, this was a very cost effective and fun way to make the house even better.I think my son is going to love it.I'll post pictures when I get time.

I have a 5yr old son, 3yr old daughter and 1yr old twins. They all LOVE this playhouse. It is not too girly because of the sports stuff. It is not to boyish because it is a playhouse. The babies love to crawl in and out the openings. It is fun for all 4 kids of all ages. This is a great way to go if you have boys and girls.

After doind lots of research and reading reviews of the playhouses out there I decided on this one because of all of the play possibilities. Right now my 2 year old son loves to go in and out the door and through the tunnel and he really enjoys the sports court. This house also provides so many ways for him to use his imagination as he gets older. I can see him playing in this playhouse for years and since the house is very spacious inside he has lots of room to grow. Three or four children can easily fit (or a child, two adults and a dog). This playhouse was priced very well, in the mid-range of playhouses with a lot more features than most. I was surprised at the value and since it is a little tikes toy I know it will last. It is very sturdy and I put it together by myself in about 45 minutes, I am sure it would take less time without the help of an very excited two-year-old. You do need an electric drill and the basketball hoop was very hard to get into the slots but with some soap and water went in with a hard push.I would recomend this playhouse to anyone who likes to get a lot of value for their money.

My MIL just bought this for our noq 21 month old sons two months ago, its terific! They love it and its by far the best house out there. WE use it every day and it holds up to much abuse, but we really bought it because it wasnt pink and frilly, a must with two BOYS

Our sons are still a little young to climb all over our very large wooden swing set, and we wanted more for them to play with, this house is just soo awsome. Its a little large, so I dont suggest you purchasing it for indoor use (especially since every side had an activity so it wouldnt be as fun against a wall). It can fit both my boys in it and the weather doesnt do any damage... we plan on covering it with a tarp in the winter though... before our sons go inside we wipe it down with dissinfected wipes and get all the little bugs out for them, no biggy...

Now for all the extras!!!

SPORTS SIDE->

* Basket ball hoop, now we dont have to buy a little one that will just tip over anyway (we have one inside) and our sons love to play with it (they are only in the 32nd percentile) so its a bit tough to make a basket on the highest setting, it can adjust to the top of the house, or to right abouve the soccer net, great for toddlers or older children!!!

* The soccer net also doubles as a little window and our sons really love to peek in and out of it... its very durable and there is no ripping in it *yet*... but they like it when my husband shows them to kick the ball inside, and it keeps the air flow throughout the toy house nice and fresh...

* The little number game is cute, my sons dont understand it yet, but for older family and friends its a big hit

SUPERMARKET->

* A little ATM machine, so adorable and my sons cant get enough of it... although the older kids have more imaginative play with that part of the house

* The little window alot of the younger toddlers enjoy, its one of their favorite parts of the house, all little kids love opening and closing things, yet again older kids like to make this a McDonalds drive in window or something... great fun

* The big window makes it easy to see how the boys are doing inside, and it also keeps it nice and fresh, not too moldy and stuffy like some of the other houses, we like the big window

GAS STATION->

* The tunnel is a big hit wiht the toddlers, they like to peek through it, its my sons favorite way to get in! The older kids like to chase through it and try to "fly" through...

* The little pump is great for kettrikes and cozy coupes, my sons and the other toddlers like putting it into the cars gas tank, they think thats cute, but the older kids sometimes pretend its a hose or something, very cute imaginations

* The little telephone is a big hit with everyone, they love pretending with it and I usually find it everywhere but the base, but hey thats no biggy

* YEt again more ventalation with the window... I think thats why this house doesnt get too much mold or little bugs... theres just no really dark and damp spaces!

SCHOOL HOUSE->

* Theres not too much to this side of the house, and it doesnt really look like a school, but the younger kids like slaming the door

* The older kids make it a barn and like to pretend its a stable door, very very imaginative

* EVEN MORE VENTALATION AND ANOTHER SPOT TO SEE EVERYONE, TWO BIG WINDOWS AND A BARN-DOOR...

This house is perfect for toddlers, and bigger kids (up to about 10-11ish) there are just endless possibilities for this house and everyone enjoys it... I always know theres something for EVERY one to have fun with outside... the perfect playhouse out there

LEGO Creator Fire Brigade 10197

LEGO Creator Fire Brigade 10197My 9-yr-old son loves Lego models. We wanted to get him a real challenge for the summer, so we got him this one even though they recommend it for ages 16+.He was able to build it by himself in two days after about 5 hours of sorting and organizing the pieces first.(We had hoped it would take longer!).He said the instruction booklets were hard but he was able to get through them himself. The set was missing a few pieces and luckily we have a big bin of extra pieces that helped us out. Overall, it was a great project and he loved the final result. He highly recommends this model for all real Lego lovers out there.

My son and I spent 4 days building this. We took our time. He is 6yrs. old and loved the little details on the inside of each floor. The building is beautiful. The detailing is fantastic. We build allot of Lego and this is in my top 3 favorites. My 6yr old built the truck easily and loved building all the neat things inside(ping pong table, couch, fridge etc).

Thanks V

If you like awe inspiring Lego buildings, you will enjoy this one very much.It takes a lot more time to build than most Lego buildings, but if you are like me, you will not want to stop building until it is complete.

The 2D pictures do not do this building justice. It is a large building with a lot of details, which will make it one of the centerpieces of your Lego collection.

The bricks are separated into bags numbered 1 and 2.Bags 1 build the truck, the mini figures, and the first floor of the station.Bags 2 build the second floor and roof of the fire station.I use the food storage size Rubbermaid (or equivalent) containers when I build.I find it easier to separate the bricks by color and size. With as many pieces as this set has, you will definitely want to organize the bricks in some manner before you start building, otherwise there is an increased chance you will become frustrated searching for that one small piece.Another great thing about using the containers .... if you need to take a break from building, you can put the covers on and reduce the chance of them getting knocked over.

This is definitely worth the MSRP of $150.00.I am not disappointed at all that I bought it.I am disappointed I waited so long to catch the Lego bug and missed out on the modular buildings that came before this one, which are now priced out of my budget.

Happy building!

Upon reaching the 3rd page of the first instruction booklet, I spent nearly an hour searching for small dark gray plates that were not there.I gave up and found reports of boxes in lot 39R1 missing an entire bag on the internet. Both of the boxes I bought say "39R1" on the tape that holds the box shut.

I don't know if I am missing the entire bag but there are definitely a lot of pieces missing.

Looks like a great set though.

Solar Motion Bicycle Rider by Carlisle Co.

Solar Motion Bicycle Rider by Carlisle Co.I threw my husband a big party for his birthday on St. Patrick's Day and this was one of his many presents. He's a bicycle nut--rides to work and back every day, 5 miles each way, in rain/cold/snow/wind.Tours around all over the city.Buns of steal. This little thing was the life of the party.Yes, it needs to be in direct sunlight for the solar panel to be employed. But people in Seattle have no reason to malign such a device because they get so little sun.You don't hear people from Norway complaining about their winter, do you?

The alternative to the swiveling solar panel is the electric cord: use it.It has a convenient on/off switch on the cord so you don't have to keep unplugging it.

Honestly, the little the biker going steadily on his merry way on is joy to watch.Place the back with the bright lamp against the wall and out of sight becuase it is very bright. But we've had it on all weekend and find it delightful. We're thinking of getting the ferris wheel for a nice set.

Way cool!

This is the neatest thing.I purchased this for my daughter for Christmas as she had seen it at a museum some time ago at an unaffordable price. It is cute as can be and uses the sunlight for it's solar power which makes the figure on the bike pedal. Great night light also.

I bought this for a friend who enjoys bicycle riding (she talks about her adventures with such enthusiasm).I gave it to her one night after we were out shopping and she immediately went inside to open it up.Being night with no sun she plugged it in and the light bulb immediately blew. We were out a week later and we were looking for a replacement bulb (120v40w S-base)and we were unable to find a bulb anywhere.I have been on-line and because of the wattage and the base type this is not a bulb that can be replaced easily.Still looking.Very disappointed that's what you get for "Made in China"

If you don't live in a sunny area beware, no bike riding will be done!!!!

I was given this as a "cool toy to put in my window" however the amount of solar energy required is direct sunlight here in Seattle. Well anyone who has been here a while will quickly realize that we get that maybe 2 months out of the year, maybe. The rest of the time, you are using a 40 watt lamp to power a toy. What a waste. A larger solar cell and a battery would make this fun, skip the stupid lamp. Let the solar panel charge the battery, at a given threshold of power run the bicycle. How hard is that? Apparently more than the manufacturer of this gizmo can handle. Returned immediately.

Pro:

If you use the light, the bicycle guy does "ride". Works as a night light.

Con:

Takes full sunlight, maybe good in LA or Phoenix. A bright cloudy day is not enough. And "toy", right, what does a kid actually get to do with this toy? Watch it move. Move the solar panel around to see that indeed sunlight does power it. And if they don't mind breaking it, unwire it, put an electrical meter on the wires and see how much power is generated.

Teaching value:

none, or nearly so.

Not Recommended: except as a science/toy store display device.

Room to Grow 4-in-1 Play Yard, Inflatable Pink

Room to Grow 4-in-1 Play Yard, Inflatable PinkI wish we would have seen this before we got our big and heavy pack and play!My baby is now 6 mths old and we just got one of these inflatable play yards. She loves it.She is learning how to sit up alone and this is perfect for her so she doesn't whack her head on anything hard when she falls over!It is perfect to take outside so a little fresh air and keeps her contained in the living room/kitchen while I am cleaning. She has not slept in this yet, however, I'm certain that if we would have had this earlier, she would have been in this instead of the pack and play.Very compact and easy to set up/take down.

Wall of Fire 3 packPurchased the Wall of Fire 3 pack from Amazon/Gale Force 9.The item is made from plastic with the "flame" portion being semi-transparent yellow/orange/red.The base is red and is wide enough to keep the piece upright during play.

All in all a wonderful item.My only wish is that the three pieces have different sizes (i.e. one long, one medium and one shorter) to allow for more flexible use during play.

Melissa & Doug Deluxe Pound and Roll Tower

Melissa & Doug Deluxe Pound and Roll TowerI bought this for my son who is five and has Down syndrome, so I'm not always sure which developmental age is best for him.He likes to name the colors and has figured out how to best attack the balls to get them through the openings. The openings are narrow enough to require a little work, but are not so narrow as to be frustrating. The balls make a clicking sound that seem to be pleasing to a little boy. There isn't anything to contain the balls once they roll out so I usually put it in a shallow container or box lid so that the balls don't all end up under the furniture.

I bought this toy for her 18 month old friend because it seemed right up his alley, I took it out of the box to wrap it and my daughter saw it and went crazy. She would sneak into the room and play with the toy.I finally had to buy her her own. They love this toy.The only problem, I would not recommend having this toy out when having playdates, not just for the wood hammer that one kid could swing at the other but the balls can be thrown at other children too and they are wood......

Buy this toy it is fun and a good height, and for some reason, they love it.

When I bought this toy, I was unsure if it would be a hit, but to my surprise my 18-month old daughter loved it.It is fun her to place the balls in the openings, use the hammer, and watch the balls go down. The balls make a nice sound too as they roll through the maze. She also likes to play with balls separately putting them into boxes and baskets, etc since they are a nice weight and size for play, unlike plastic and fabric balls. The finish on the balls is of good quality since the brightly colored finish doesn't rub off when the balls occasionally go banging into my nice white baseboards! The only downside to this toy since the balls are wood we had to teach my daughter to just roll them, not to throw them since they are heavy! She has been good with that rule, so overall we would recommend this toy.

Martin Kilpatrick Standard Net Set

Martin Kilpatrick Standard Net SetThis is a very good, inexpensive net that works well. Be aware that the net overhangs the table, and the brackets connect to the table several inches inside the end of the net. That means that the length of the net does not tell you how far apart the brackets connect to the table. Subtract several inches from the length of the net to get the length of how far apart the brackets connect to the table. If you have an older massive table, like I do, you may have to cut a notch in the table to get the brackets to connect. It was worth the small hassle for the price of this net. For most folks, this net is proabably a perfect size. There is also a string that you tighten to add tension to the top of the net.

Learning Resources Rainbow Fraction Tiles with Tray

Learning Resources Rainbow Fraction Tiles with Tray
  • Color-coded tiles
  • Use the tiles to perform simple math operations
  • Each set contains 51 plastic tiles
  • Storage tray measures 10"L x 9"H

We have a set of these for our homeschool classroom. They are very educational, illustrate fractions well, and are colorful. On the downside they are thin plastic and the larger pieces can break easily if the kids aren't very careful with them (especially the '1'). The other big problem is the tray they come in. Unless it's sitting flat on a surface where it will not be disturbed all the little tiles will come out. We now keep them in a ziploc bag instead which is easier but it's annoying to have to pick out all the little ones to show 1/12th, it's also easy for these tiny tiles to get lost.

I am amazed at the amount of learning they facilitate. My students love to use these tiles. It really helps them to be able to see the fractions and compare and make equivalent fractions.

I bought this for my K-er to play around with when it was on sale. After a couple of days of playing around, she was able to add fractions with the same denominator, compare fraction sizes, and make wholes from parts. Needless to say, this set is an amazing tool for a visual learner.

In addition to the tray and tiles, it also comes with instructions with several games and activities to use with the set. There are also stickers showing different fractional representations. For example, they have pie part fractions as stickers and the stickers are color-coded to match with the tiles. The 1/4 tiles are yellow, so the pie part 1/4 stickers are also yellow. This is going to help in the future when I want to show that a fraction can be represented in many different ways. I plan on putting the stickers on index cards to use with the set.

On the downside, the set feels like very cheap plastic. Because it doesn't feel sturdy at all, I would think that in a larger classroom it would be easily broken and the pieces would quickly be lost.

I read the review about the smaller pieces popping out and the tray needing to be on a flat surface, so we store it flat on my daughter's bookshelf and do any work on a table.

I got these for my 2nd grade daughter who was being introduced to fractions. When I try to get them out, she just sighs & says, "yeah mom, I already know it!"She finds them boring & is much more interested in more applicable fractions such as cutting a pizza, candy bar, etc. Also, I found that it has a good many fraction pieces, but when you go to comparing that 1/3 of 6 is 2, it doesn't allow for that computation as there are no 1/6th pieces to compare. However, with the cuisenaire rods, you can easily compute that 1/3 of six is the rod with 2 cubes.Anyway, I bought both items at about the same time & have really not used these as the cuisenaire rods seem to do what these do, plus so much more.Learning Resources Connecting Cuisenaire Rods Introductory Set

I bought this for the 'Homework Help' Center at my local library. The librarians were thrilled with it and we know it will be useful for the upcoming school year when the elementary kids are studying fractions.

LEGO Creator: The Race to Build It Board Game

LEGO Creator: The Race to Build It Board GameWe purchased this game for our three Legomaniacs, ages 6, 10, & 11, and it was not a disappointment! The object of the game is to race around the board collecting pieces to see who can build his/her creation first."Take a piece from another player" spaces add to the competition and unexpected outcomes of the game.Game is great for younger than the 7 & up age rating given it.In addition, our 6 year old spent an afternoon just building & rebuilding the creations displayed on the game cards.Instructions for the game were clear, concise, and they were thoughtful enough to include a display listing of all the pieces that belong to the game. This is a great aid when trying to separate game board pieces from other Legos, and for being sure you have all the pieces before you start the game. What I would change: the game "marker" pieces are Lego people "hats."They are tiny, and hard to keep up with, and blend in with the colors & shapes on the board, making them very hard to see on the board during play.Keeping up with those tiny hats slowed the play of the game considerably. We improvised by substituting various Lego people from other sets. They were easier to keep up with, and added more character to the game.

I love games, and our 6-year old boy loves Legos. Needless to say, this is the product for us.

Before the game starts, one player picks a color, and all players pick a card from that color. The card details what Lego vehicle to build, so each game players are building different vehicles.

The vehicles are composed of colored and special pieces. You collect pieces by landing on various spaces on the board. Not brain surgery, but fun nonetheless.

After playing the game several times, we've found that the best strategy is to collect special pieces every single time you land on a wild space. You have the option to collect colored pieces, but it seems this is a red herring, as special pieces are so much more difficult to acquire.

Another thing that's kind of broken is that there are spaces that let you steal a piece from another player, but it's rare that another player has a piece you need.

Overall, though, the game plays well, though, and we have real fun every time we play.

I was shopping for something fun for my school-aged summer childcare boys to do for the remaining 3 weeks of summer break when I discovered the existence of the Lego Creator Board game. It arrived today, much to the pleasure of 2 little boys.We played the game all afternoon while the preschoolers took naps.It was the first peaceful afternoon we've had.I wish I'd have discovered this game sooner!I may actually have a few nerves left!

I do have 2 suggestions for the game. One, I was disappointed that the game pieces where baseball caps.We immediately ran to our lego box and found four grumpy medieval men and replaced their helmets with the caps.Secondly, it would be a nice addition to find a way for the board to have ridges to keep the "special blocks" separate from the regular pieces.I used a chip/dip bowl with the tiny bowl in the center.

A friend bought this game for my 4 year old son's birthday. I thought that she was crazy but the first time we tried it my son loved it. He had no trouble figuring out the directions for playing the game or assembling the pieces. His favorite space is "take a block from another player". About the only change I'd make is to the playing pieces. They are tiny hats. Otherwise it's a great game. We play it several times a day!

This a fun game to ply with our 4 year old son and 8 year old daughter.Lots of pieces, and all are needed, so you can't lose any.But the kids love it and the adults playing don't get bored either.

Fisher-Price Laugh and Learn Apptivity Case: iPad Edition

Fisher-Price Laugh and Learn Apptivity Case: iPad EditionThis has been really nice for protecting the iPad from babies and the babies from the iPad, but you'll have to modify it just a tad to get full use out of it.Works fine with my iPad 3.

The two main problems are:

1.) Can't turn it on/off (or recharged) without removing iPad from case.

2.) Some apps may have areas of the screen you want to protect against the babies pressing.

For the first I set the iPad to automatically turn off after 15 minutes of being left alone, then drilled a small hole over the Home button. Now I can turn it on with a pen, and it'll turn itself off when they're done with it.Don't have to recharge nearly so often.

For the second I found that cutting a thin piece of cardboard in the shape of the area you want to protect works wonders. The fit is tight enough that there's no need to use tape or glue it'll stay in place.I had a piano app with a config button that allowed them to get to Facebook and iTunes, but with the cardboard problem solved.

I like this case. I probably would not buy it again though. Here's why: It's expensive for what you're getting. It adds a good amount of size and weight to your iPad but I guess it has to in order to make your iPad rugged. I tested this with a first generation iPad and the fit is perfect. I can't speak on later versions of the iPad and whether or not they would rattle around inside this case. It's difficult to dry this thing after washing it because internally, there are lots of little spaces where water can get caught. You do not want your iPad in this thing unless it's completely dry. The screen produces a lot of air bubbles (the same air bubbles that you get when applying a protective screen to your iPad). The flaps in the back that pop up to make a stand are worthless. Laying the iPad flat on a table with one of the flaps popped up does not raise the iPad high enough for children to see and use the iPad. The toys in the handle just get in the way. Without the toy rings in the handle, it makes for a great handle. But with the toys in there, it makes carrying the iPad with the handle difficult. The free apps are fun and interactive but you do not need to purchase this case to buy them. Just search for "Laugh & Learn" in the App Store. There are 4 apps in all.

First thing is:I just paid $26 with FREE shipping and now it's almost $50?????? Seems shady. However, this is exactly what I've been looking for. I have 2 toddlers in my home that are early learners and I have lots of apps for them. The home button of the iPad screams "push me" when you're 2 years old. I like that it has the option for covering the home button or leaving it open to the protective touch screen for when Mommy wants to take it back. I also like that it's almost impossible for little hand to remove the back. Yes, it's adds weight, but that means its harder for them to lobb across the living room. Yes, it's bulky, but I honestly don't mind. Now I don't mind allowing my daughter to sit and play with my iPad. Giving her supervised independence and giving me peace of mind is what I was looking for and it's what I got. By the way. I typed this review with my iPad in the Fisher-Price case.

As most "child centred" tablets are really deficient in terms of number of apps, battery time and need for re-charging, we settled for an iPad for our two and a half year old and it is really good as a learning, playing and teaching tool. However, it was always going to take a battering by being thrown, smashed, sat on and ... you get the picture!.This product has proven to be very durable, strong, not too heavy, but just heavy enough to discourage too much throwing around by a toddler. It also allows reasonable picture quality through the screen. It has been dropped, scratched, smashed and thrown around but the iPad is very well protected, i couldnt have found a better product to protect the iPad. One major failing is that in designing the thick strong casing and protection, there is no way of adjusting overall volume, switching the ipad off, using headphones or doing anything that involves controls on the iPad's own casing. Otherwise i recommend this highly.

This is the best purchase I have made for my iPad.

I have 3 toddlers. They can use my iPad to play games, view videos, etc without me having any fear of damage.

The protective shield for the face of the iPad doesn't hinder it's capability at all.

The children have dropped the iPad and the insulated case has protected it from damage.

My only criticism is that you have to remove the iPad from the case in order to charge it and you need a tool, coin or butter knife to turn the mechanism on the back of the case to remove the iPad. It would be nice if something were included that attached to the case.

KidKraft Nantucket Table & 4 Pastel Chairs

KidKraft Nantucket Table & 4 Pastel ChairsLike the other two reviewers, I loved this table and chairs when it first arrived. It is so lovely, with the cute pastel chairs. Unfortunately, after 6 months it's not so lovely anymore because the paint is chipping off all the edges. I'm very sad because what did look like a charming table and chair set for a reasonable price now looks tattered after half a year. Compare that to the pine set from IKEA that we've had 3 years that still looks brand new for a third of the price. If you do decide to buy this set, I would recommend applying a protective coat of polyurethane or similar to minimize paint chipping. Also, my husband used an electric screwdriver to assemble the set and the chair backs split in several places when the screws went in because of cheap wood. I would recommend using a hand tool and a light touch. I can't say I wouldn't recommend the set but I would recommend taking the above steps to avoid trouble ahead. It is super cute and the kids love having the four chairs for more kids, dolls, imaginary friends, etc.

My wife wanted to spend a lot more on a kiddie table/chairs than I wanted (hundreds of dollars), but I finally convinced her that this set (~$100) would be good enough, particularly since it'll be abused with crayons, markers, rough play, etc.It was straightforward to put together, though (as another reviewer has noted) screwing the screws too much from the bottle of the table surface can result in puncturing the table surface. It bother much much, however (it's a kiddie table, after all).My wife called the manufacturer, and without any fuss, a new table surface was mailed to us quite prompty. After about 10 months of use, the paint has held up well, but the chairs are showing signs of wear. The chairs are slowly starting to come apart at the seams (the dowels are coming loose), though I just force them back together, and they'll be fine for another week. Our kid eats, draws, and plays at/on the table. And often, both my wife and I are both sitting at on these chairs at the table, which may explain why the chairs are coming apart. For the price, I'm still happy with the purchase.

I was hesitant to buy this table and chair set because of the negative reviews about the product. But, in the end I decided that the price was just too good to pass up! The table and chairs are great!!! I don't know how the other people treat their belongings but, things here is my house get A LOT of use...and this little set appears as if it's going to stand the test of time. If you want to waste your money on a table and chair set that is five times the price and the same thing...by all means do it.

I bought this set to compliment my daughter's vintage pink kitchen and they match beautifully (in size and color). The table is used all the time for breakfast and snack time as well as for the "kid's table" when we have company. She also uses it to color and play with playdough while I'm working in the kitchen. It's pretty small so I imagine she will outgrow it by age 5 or so but it has been well worth the money.Easy to assemble but be careful to not over tighten the screws on the chair backs because they are made with mdf board, not wood.

Blue Striped Sailboat 15" - Wood Model Sailing Boat - Yacht Model - Nautical Centerpiece - Wedding

Blue Striped Sailboat 15' - Wood Model Sailing Boat - Yacht Model - Nautical Centerpiece - Wedding Centerpiece - Yacht Model - Model Yacht - Not A Model Ship KitThe first of these lovely little boats arrived with a broken tiller.Seller with no hassle sent me a second one.It was broken in the exact spot as the first.I've glued the tiller back on but it falls off when my grandson plays with it--but he's only 5.Perhaps this is not a "toy" but more of a model for an older child.Packaging needs to be re-thought by seller.I still think the boat is very, very nice in design and materials except for that pesky tiller.

Waterloo British Infantry Flank Companies (52) 28mm Victrix Ltd

Waterloo British Infantry Flank Companies 28mm Victrix LtdI have only recently gotten into smaller scale soldiers for the sake of saving space. These are excellently sculpted and the right size not to overrun your tabletop. These soldiers can be assembled in a variety of poses and many people use them for wargaming. I myself just like them as shelf pieces. The scale makes them a little easier to paint as aging has made eyesight a little dim. For anyone interested in the Napoleonic era, military history, or military miniatures, this could be what you are looking for.
