Attack! By Eagle Games

Attack! By Eagle GamesI wouldn't say I'm a know-it-all when it comes to board games, but I do know what is fun (for me).

I started getting re-addicted to Risk about a year ago, but I wanted more strategy and more depth.I looked around and purchased Axis and Allies World Edition.I found that game a little too deep, it felt like I was playing a computer game.It was difficult to keep track of things and it took almost 1.5 hours just to set up!Anyway, if you are looking for something incredibly deep and almost a simulator of WWII, then go with Axis and Allies.

That's when I purchased Attack! (I just saw it in the hobby shop and went for it).I have never made a better choice with a board game. It's a beautiful mix of random play (like Risk), and depth (like Axis/Allies).The game takes about 2-4 hours to play, 30 min to set up (including teaching someone new how to play) and an incredible amount of time to master.

The key component that I should point out, and the part that I love, is the random play.I feel this is what really makes Risk a great game. For example:If I have played Axis and Allies for awhile I would know what my first 3 moves would be if I was USA.That to me is not fun, the game is always the same.

Now Attack! gives you that random play that Risk is so good at.In Attack! the start of the game is always different because youstart in different territories every game (depending on when you go in the rotation). The game is always different, and makes for some good post-game stories :)

Lastly this is only half of the game, and it's totally different when you have the expansion as well. This game feels kind of kiddy at first because it's so basic but when you get the expansion things become much more involved. So I highly reccomend the expansion as well (I see here at Amazon they are incredibly cheap too...)

First off I'll state that you should definentely get the expansion for this, it's just not complete without it.

Now, you can think of this as either a complicated version of risk, or a simplified Axis and Allies, either way, you get an amazing game.A basic description of this game would be that it is a somewhat generic WWII based game where a player will have to wage war until he/she captures the enemy(s) capital(s).There is a small helping of economy and politics thrown in for good measure, but it is mostly military gameplay.

In the original game (this one) you get half of the planet to play on, but the expansion gives you the rest of the board, as well as hundreds of naval minitures which are not included in this original.

The gameplay is fun, different every time, only as difficult as your opponent(s).

Some tips I will give from my experience playing this game...

Play with at least 3 people, preferably 4-6

Set aside PLENTY of time, preferably across 2 or 3 days. (The game takes around 6 hours to fully complete with 4 people)

Use Poker Chips instead of the included Paper bills for money, they don't crumple up like paper does.

Clip the Original and Expansion boards together with paperclips to keep them in place

And finaly, use whatever means needed to acheive victory over your enemys! Diplomacy, Bribeing, Backstabbing, Doubledealing, or just good old fasioned military supremacy.

Overall:

Pros:

Fun

Social

Large Board

Tons of peices

Overall nicely made (quality)

Cons:

Takes a while, set time aside

Somewhat Generic WWII game

Like other reviews say, this is good if you want a souped-up version of Risk.Pros: Giant map, pretty easy to play (my 8 year old can play it), lots of pieces, durable construction. The only con (if it is a con) is that it takes a long time to play--it takes about 3-4 hours with 4 people. But we'll worth the incredibly cheap price.

I'm a veteran board and computer strategy player.Great games like StarCraft, Empire Earth (computer) and Settlers of Catan, Axis/Allies (board) make for great social gatherings.Attack is neither fun nor challenging. I did not find it particularly hard to figure out as one reviewer stated, but it is definitely a pass.Get the new Axis & Allies or Diplomacy, Shogun or Acquire but pass on this dog.
