No Stress Chess

No Stress ChessI love my 4 year-old daughter more than I can say but, in all honesty, she's no chess prodigy.

Daddy has all these different chess sets around the house, so that's where the interest began (an interest I was more than happy to encourage). We made a game of learning the names of the various pieces and how to set up the board. I thought our next step would involve learning how the pieces move and maybe even playing 'games' with some of the pieces' movements (bishops and rooks versus bishop and rooks, etc.), it was then that we discovered "No Stress Chess."

What the folks at Winning Moves Games have provided is something you'd imagine some clever teacher would have thought of centuries ago, namely; drawing from a shuffled deck of cards to determine which chess piece is to be moved.

Players draw from a face-down pile of 56 cards which each show a picture, the name, and movement of a particular chess piece; if they are able to move that piece, that is what they must do. The card is then placed face-up on their discard pile (each player has their own separate discard pile). In addition to 'chess piece movement' cards, there are also 'move same type of piece again' cards; this card allows the player to move the same type of piece last moved by themselves or their opponent. Believe it or not, that's just about all there is to it!

Needless to say (if you already know how to play chess), the game that results from this type of play is a whole different experience, for the most part based on the luck of the draw. There is no such thing as being in "check," and a "checkmate" is achieved by actually taking your opponent's king! Accordingly, there is "no stress" in placing an unprotected queen next to your opponent's king unless, of course, your opponent proceeds to draw a "king" card.

Once this basic form of the game is mastered (referred to as "Level One"), players may progress to the next level. In "Level Two" each player is dealt 3 cards at a time and may choose which of those cards they wish to play for their move. In "Level Three" each player is dealt 5 cards. Finally, the instructions suggest an "Advanced Game" where the rules of pawn promotion, castling, checking, and en passant are employed.

In addition to the playing cards a two-sided board is included. The squares on one side of the board show how to set up the game, with the name and picture of each piece on their appropriate square. The included plastic chess pieces are "heavy-duty" and virtually indestructible (with the noteworthy exception of the cross on top of the king). Lastly, in addition to the rules and variations of "No Stress Chess," a very adequate explanation of "Standard Chess Rules" and basic strategy are provided.

Okay, back to the title of my review...much to my amazement, I have a 4 year-old who moves her knight around the board like a seasoned grand master. What more can I say?

-Thom Shanken

My son received this for his 6th birthday, and didn't want to stop playing it the next day, even to go to his party! He had been learning some basics of Chess but was not able to really play. This game uses cards that tell you which piece to move, so even children (and adults) who have never played the game can jump right in. The moves for each piece are on the card. You have to move the piece shown if you can, but you decide which/how. It really changes the game since being in check does not apply -even if you can threaten your opponent's piece, you can't necessarily get it on your next turn. There are also a few cards that let you move your choice of either of the last two cards shown, which is helpful if you just got in a position to strike! One side of the board shows where the pieces go and the other is a standard chess board so when your child is comfortable, he can play the 'regular' way.We love both ways!My son actually began playing 'real' Chess after only a few weeks.I think this is the best possible way to teach Chess quickly and accurately, and as an experienced player, I really enjoy the game with the cards too -it is faster and more of a game of chance, but still fun!Definitely pick this up for anyone learning or previously intimidated by Chess.

I am 51 years old. This afternoon, after my 19-year-old finished a game of "real" chess with his 6-year-old cousin, Cousin's twin sister challenged me to a game. "Sorry, sweetie," I said. "I don't know how to play chess."

"But, Aunt Cynthia," she said, "It's No-Stress Chess. You don't have to know how!"

"But chess is very confusing to my poor brain, dear," I told her.

She sighed and said, very patiently, "But it is NO STRESS. I can teach you!"

Far be it from me to let down my niece! With a little bit of encouragement from my sister, the next thing I knew, I was sitting on the floor (more comfortably than I have in years!), taking instruction in No-Stress Chess.

Long story short -I am buying this game! Within 10 minutes, I had overcome the long-ago trauma of my one and only chess lesson (35 years ago), and I was getting the hang of which pieces moved which directions and how far. My niece did win, but not by much, and not because I let her -she's just had more practice! By the next time we visit, in a couple of weeks, I intend to be able to play her to a draw, and maybe by our birthdays this summer, I'll be able to play "real" chess! This is not a "dumbed down kids' game" -it's a super teaching tool, and I highly recommend it!

UPDATE: March 4, 2007

When we bought the No Stress Chess for our seven year old grandson as a Christmas gift it was because his older sister was complaining that she needed someone to play chess with. Since she and her brother enjoyed playing other games together, the 'No Stress Chess' game seemed the ideal way to satisfy two grandchildren with one gift! Our granddaughter would have a chess partner and our grandson would be able to understand and play chess without being frustrated. I read the reviews, selected this one and hoped for the best. It was a great choice!

I can't believe how much our grandson, age 7, and his sister, age 5 have learned about chess by playing this game! I am impressed. I rate the No Stress Chess an amazing success! CheckMate! ~ The Boss

Apprehensive about introducing our smart yet perfectionist (hates making a mistake)to chess, because I wanted him to learn to play without being turned off to the game forever because of its complexity, I bought no stress chess to ease him into an appreciation of chess.

He loves it, hisbrother loves it, my husband loves it, and I love it!While making moves you would NEVER make in real chess, and abandoning strategy for luck of the draw, games can be won or lost BY ANYONE moving the pieces correctly in as little as 3 minutes! We have replaced tv watching with a nightly family chess tournament during the one-half hour before bedtime!

The pieces have a nice feel and the board has 2 sides one marked with the correct location of piece set-up and the other a plain board for when we get to "yes stress" chess...

Ukid Natural Wood Activity Table and 4 Bright Chair Set

Ukid Natural Wood Activity Table and 4 Bright Chair SetWe bought this for an 18 month old and she loves it. The colors are nice but not cheap and silly looking. The chairs are so solid that I sit on them and I weigh 240. Perfect for her love of coloring.

The only thing that keeps it from being five stars is the assembly of the chairs. No matter what I did they wobble just slightly. Nothing noticeable when you sit on it, but for the price I thought it could have been perfect.

Replogle Globes Commander II Globe, 16-Inch, Antique

Replogle Globes Commander II Globe, 16-Inch, AntiqueWe have always wanted one why did we wait so long? This is a great globe for the price.Good size, and the stand is attractive. If we had the space, a fancier stand might be nice, but this is a great package at this price(you can even remove the spindle for a tabletop display). The colorful look of the globe is very appealing, and I appreciate the raised texture for the mountains.it adds an extra level of appreciation for their size.

Sorry but I'm not getting the good reviews of this globe. Very shoddy construction. Maybe mine was a reject that somehow got sold when it wasn't supposed to. Either way, I'm very disapointed. The latitude lines at the seam don't even line up they are about 1/4" off. Then the seal of whatever it is scotch tape? around the equator is coming up in places to the point where I thought maybe it was just a piece of plastic on there to protect it. But nope. It's meant to be there sort of. Too bad it's not. Where the stand screws in to the globe, mine was crooked or warped. Mine is going back. There has to be something better for this money.

Oh...and I forgot to mention that the parts were lying loose in the bottom of the box with a couple of them missing.

Purchased as a Christmas gift for my husband. He collects maps and has in the past had to dig out our world Atlas book when he wished to view a particular country. The globe, he says, is his all time favorite gift. The only reason I did not rate as 5 stars is that both the top and the lower half of the globe the longitude lines do not line up properly. Perhaps the person responsible for pasting the map on the sphere was having a bad day. I felt it was a good value for the cost.

Large Table Top Chess Set for the Blind or Those With Low Vision

Large Table Top Chess Set for the Blind or Those With Low Visioni bought this hoping to play chess with my wife who is evidently blind. in any case the board came very quickly. however none of the pieces look like they do in any other chess board. the board itself looks used. the black on the black spaces are all chipped and scratched. the board looks homemade the doors for the pieces aren't even rectangular looks like a newbie with a saw tried cutting all the individual pieces to put it together there are nicks and stuff all over the board it is very small. the doors for the pieces are stiff due to the fact they aren't even the right shape. the wood feels like balsa wood and it feels like the creator didn't know what sand paper is. overall i am extremely dissatisfied i payed 30 dollars after shipping for something i could have made myself for 10 bucks i was expecting something more professional not something that looks like a little kid made it.the thought behind it is OK but then a magazine for a hearing impaired company came with it now why in gods name would someone hearing impaired need a chessboard for the blind. and for a blind person to feel these pieces they wouldn't know what is what due to the fact that they are shaped totally different form real pieces. honestly i want a full refund shipping and all and a box sent by the company prepaid for me to send this back. and once again it is a very small board the cheap paper boards i get form the dollar store are larger and have better quality. nails totally missed its mark. this is dangerous for a blind person THEY CANT SEE THE NAIL so they are gonna get hurt. it wasn't even finished with wood stain. lets see 34.20 was the price i payed. the phone number on the invoice is (111)-111-1111.

I ordered this chess set that is for the visually impaired. I should have got my ruler out with the dimensions. It states it is large. It is not large. It is quite small. It is also poorly made for the price, more of a dollar store quality. I was quite disappointed with how cheap it looked. I now have to pay money to ship this lousy thing back. I regret not reading all the reviews before sending my order as one of the reviewers shared exactly what I discovered. Small, poorly made.

Little Tikes Thomas & Friends Toddler Bed Box

Little Tikes Thomas & Friends Toddler Bed BoxOf course, any kid who loves Thomas will be thrilled with this bed.We have had it for almost a year now, and my four-year-old still likes to run trains and cars in the "track" down the sides of the bed.Important note:I did not read carefully, but you MUST buy and cut a piece of plywood or the mattress will fall through the bed to the floor.(It says that in the description, but I missed it.)Thank goodness my husband was home from Iraq at the time to take care of this pretty important detail!A very durable bed.I can get into the bed myself to snuggle my son at night. After a year, it is still holding up very well!

We bought this as our son loves everything Thomas. It was time for our 2.5 year old son to move to his own bed. After we got his bed my son goes to sleep on this bed. The only issue with the bed is that it does not come with any base for the mattress. Other thatn that it is a great children bed.

My little man loves his Thomas bed. He's been sleeping in it everynight. When he arrived home from daycare I had the bed set up and ready for him. When he seen it, he jumped up and down, kissed and hugged the Thomas face.It was a wonderful and happy sight to see.I did my reading on the bed and read alot of reviews for the bed and noticed that the only complaints from customers who brought the bed, was that they wished it had or came with some kind of support for the mattress. A few people suggest buying some type of plywood for support. However, if your baby had a crib already, all you needed to do was to break down the crib and use the spring support that helped hold up the crib mattress, since the bed uses a standard crib mattress. The spring support fits perfect on the Thomas bed and holds the mattress good; no slipping or sliding. No purchasing any plywood.

Just an idea.

I love the bed, my son loves the bed, we're all happy. This was a great buy.

Disney Pixar Wall-E 3PC Table and Chair Set

Disney Pixar Wall-E 3PC Table and Chair SetThis was purchased for my son last Christmas from a local store, not on Amazon. He was in a serious Wall-E phase and he LOVED it.It is a cute table and I liked the safety mechanism on the chairs. However, the biggest discouragement with this set is that the circle padded back is GLUED on not screwed or soldered to the frame so they came off fairly easily and left the chairs without a back.As long as you have a child who is not tough on things you will be ok as far as the tabletop goes as it is padded plastic on top.One rip and it goes on from there. We are now looking for a wooden set that will hold up much longer.

Trademark Poker Superior 3 in 1 Poker/Craps/Roulette Tri Fold Table Top

Trademark Poker Superior 3 in 1 Poker/Craps/Roulette Tri Fold Table TopThis mat is one of the worst designed products I have ever seen. When it arrived at my house, I was immediately confused because the numbers that are black on the wheel are outlined in red on the mat. And the numbers that are supposed to be red are outlined in white. So black numbers are in red and red numbers are in white. It is too confusing and unplayable.

Skip the hassle and buy a different one. This is what happens when all of our products are made in China.

Felt table top itself is not bad but the Roulette felt is completely wrong...not sure why they chose to just outline the color red instead of filling the squares with all red...this makes it very confusing and unplayable.

Don't buy this one...there are many others to chose...

144 Mini Insect Erasers

144 Mini Insect ErasersI bought these as a "cute" option for the little prize box I let kids choose from when I do a pest control service at their home. They are tiny and not very practical as an eraser, but all the kids I've given them to don't seem to mind. They are very colorful and there is no question as to what insect each eraser is supposed to be. They work great for what I bought them for. The girls almost always choose one of these over the nasty fake cockroaches, spiders, and flies I have in there..... :)

I used these in the goodie bags I put together for my sons birthday party.A little reminder spring is here :)

Step2 Naturally Playful Big Folding Slide

Step2 Naturally Playful Big Folding SlideHere is the scene at our house since we opened the box for this slide. My daughter climbs it, slides down while saying "weeeee", lands perfectly on her feet, runs around to the steps, and starts all over again until she is too tired to continue... which can go on for hours.

We got this slide for her 2nd birthday.Up until we got this we got hints that she wanted a slide when she started making ghetto slides out of cardboard boxes. After doing a bit of research we settled on this slide for a few difference reasons.

1.Its big!She can grow and grow but this slide should last her for years.

2.Its solid Out of all the reviews I could find, this slide was the most sturdy and solid of the bunch. It never feels like its going to tip over, we weighted down the base with sand as well, and the rail on the slide keeps my little princess safe.

3.Angle of the slide Most people might not think about this but the angle at which the child slides down is important. The other similar slides we looked at had a slide that almost was a straight shoot down. This is rough on a little childs legs and gives them a huge force of impact. However this slide has a little cruve at the end which softens the impact and pushes them away from the slide. This was the tipping point for us in our decision!!!

Other nice features but not deciding factors was how you can pull the slide together to put it away and the steps have a nice grip on them for bare feet children.

The only con we have so far is that it was expensive but no more than the others in this class or similar toys.We are concerned about how much bending the plastic will do in prolonged direct sunlight but so far have had no issue there... just a watch and see deal.

In any event my daughter loves this slide and we do too.I highly recomend this to anyone for their kids!

My brother has had this Little Tikes EasyStore Large Slide for quite a few years now, with his 3 daughters using it all summer long. It has held up very well and all his girls still love it. (Ages are 7, 4, and 2.) In the summer months, they will put the end of the slide in a little pool for some water fun. The slide is very stable and large enough for even their very tall 7 year old.

While I really liked this slide, I had been comparing it to the Step2 Naturally Playful Folding Slide and trying to see which was better based on reviews. Very difficult as they are very much the same.

I ended up ordering the Step2 version and I'm very happy with it. There are a few differences that I have noticed.

Little Tikes stability wings at the bottom of the stairs is somewhat flat, but enough for little ones to trip when not paying attention racing to the stairs. The Step2 version has angled wings that have to be put together with the staircase with a couple of screws it says to screw them in with a screwdriver, but I was unable to do this. The wings slide on and stay there unless you lift up the slide to move it, but I'll leave putting the screws in to my mechanically inclined husband so I don't wreck it.

Little Tikes steps seemed to give a little more than my Step2 slide. This may be due to the fact that my brother's Little Tikes version is a few years old and my Step2 is brand new, I'm not sure.

Little Tikes top of the stairs handle is a little shorter than the Step2 version, but not a big deal.

Little Tikes slide has a slight curve/bump in the slide halfway down, while the Step2 version has the curve/bump right at the beginning.

Little Tikes end of the slide has a slight lift, but my nieces and daughter would still fall forward on a fast slide down. The Step2 version has a lot more lift and my 2.5 year old daughter really appreciates it and doesn't fall forward nearly as much.

The Little Tikes dark brown and burgundy is nice as is the Step2's medium brown and grass green. I think I like the brown and green better, but that's just my opinion.

The Little Tikes version seems to be a little lighter in weight than the Step2 Naturally Playful one. I had a harder time lugging the Step2 around than I did the Little Tikes.

They both fold easily and can store on the wall in the garage when not in use which is awesome. Being able to store it somewhere out of the way will definitely keep the slide in great condition for years!

Overall, both great slides and lots of fun. The slide length for both is about 58 inches long. They both stand about 40 inches high (top of handrail to the ground).

Buy Step2 Naturally Playful Big Folding Slide Now

I had been eyeing this for a while and finally found a great deal on amazonIt was between this slide and the Little Tikes Easystore Large Slide. After reading reviews regarding the difficulty assembling the Little Tikes Slide, ths seemed the easy choice. So far no complaints! We bought it for indoor use, so the kids can exert some energy during the months when its too cold or too hot to play outdoors.

Here are some of the perks:

1. Large enough to actually be fun.

2. Folds up for storage

3. NO ASSEMBLY REQUIRED!

Here are some of the cons:

1. Large

2. Folds up for storage

3. Our 3 1/2 yr old likes to hang on the plastic black bar you see in the picture. I'm concerned it might break.

You get the good with the bad on this purchase. Fortunately, the bad really isn't so bad. It IS large, and since I bought it for indoor use we really have to open up a space in the room when we bring it out. If your plan is to use it outside then this won't be an issue for you.

I'd say its about 5'5 when folded up. It fold ups easy and narrow. It really is meant to be hung when folded, because its doesn't stay together. There aren't any safety clips or anything. We have yet to hang it, so when its folded up against the wall we have to make sure its leaning or wedged in between something big so it won't tip over.

I've read some complaints about the drop at the end of the slide. Yea, there is one, but I think it depends on the child how they handle it. My 1 1/2 year old doesn't seem bothered by it. You can always slip a little pillow underneath to help.

Our only safety concern was the ladder, and this was when we first bought it 8 months ago. Our baby wasn't yet a year and so we'd have to watch her carefully when she climbed up. All in all, this has been one of our better large toy purchases. I'm pleasantly surprised at how much use our kids have gotten out of it!

Read Best Reviews of Step2 Naturally Playful Big Folding Slide Here

The slide itself works just fine. There is literally only one step (repeated on each side) to set up the slide. This step entails screwing the triangular fixtures on the base of the ladder. Neither of my triangles had predrilled holes which was somewhat of a nuisance to fix. I don't want to pay almostfor an imperfect unit.

EDIT (5/15/10): After waiting on the phone for about 20 minutes, I spoke with a customer service representative that told me that as of 2/10, they stopped pre-drilling holes due to the liability created when/if a child eats the shavings produced by the drill. I ended up taking a nail with a diameter less than the provided screws and tapped it through the thin layer of plastic to create holes. The screws then went on without a problem. Neither I nor the customer service representative could figure out why this wouldn't be pointed out in the manual. Hopefully they will change it soon.

We purchased this slide for our 3 year old daughters birthday. The weather here can be really unpredictable and the winters are cold and snow filled so we wanted to give our daughter a place to play when the weather was to nasty to be outside and the slide is her favorite part of the playground. The slide was extremely easy to set up and only required a few screws to hold the stabilizing feet in place. In less then 5 minutes it was set up and my daughter was happily sliding. The slide is very sturdy and doesn't wobble at all. We've had the slide for a couple of months and she's still playing on it every day. This slide is big enough that my daughter still has several more good years of play before she out grows it. We've had several Step2 products over the years (I have an 8 year old too) and I've yet to be disappointed in their products. If your kiddo loves to slide then buying this slide will be money well spent.

Update to review: It's been several years now and this slide is still going strong. We decided to keep it indoors to give my daughter something to play on when the weather is bad. We have a park very close to our house that we use on nice days. My daughters almost 6 and still plays on it a lot. She's kind of on the petite size, she only weighs 36 pounds.

LEGO DUPLO Brick Bucket Large

LEGO DUPLO Brick Bucket LargeWe've purchased this as a complement for the Bulk Tub, and both sets completely fit in the tub, so we use the bucket to store other toys in the bathroom. These are large duplo pieces, the smallest about an inch square, great for babies starting 6-9 months old. The comments I made for the bulk tub apply, and I highly recommend these for the versatily and creativity. You can make anything out of them, you're only limited by the number (both sets are enough for quite a lot) and by your imagination (I've made, trucks, boats, castles, even a cathedral). It provided great long hours of fun with my daughter now 3 years old. I expect it'll do so until she's at least 6, at which point we may switch to other smaller but more challenging toys (like the reggular legos).

My daughter is 18 months old and she loves to play with blocks. She developed interest in bigger blocks that came with the activity table. She liked to create a tower with it. To elaborate more of her hand-eye co-ordination skills, I bought this 90 piece bucket for her. It is a perfect first blocks set for a toddler. The blocks are not too big like Mega blocks and not much small like Duplo blocks. This size is perfect for their tiny hands to work with. Plus I find the bucket has nice quantity of blocks, not too many to get tired of the mess and not too little so that the young ones get to explore enough.

I have a boy that is two and my dad got him a duplo table at a yard sale that came with about 20 blocks. I had seen these buckets on sale at a local store and meant to go back and get one, but by the time I did they were gone and the new sets taht were close to the same number of pieces were over three times the cost. So I found the same bucket I had seen on here and bought two of them. It is practically the only toy he plays with. We have been using them to help teach him shapes and all sorts of other things. I am convinced that this is the greatest toy ever -it teahces hand eye coordination and much more. I wouldn't pass this deal up again ever.

Our 21 month son loves these blocks; they keep him entertained and engaged at length. However, he does seem to enjoy the noise all of those blocks make when he dumps them out of the bucket as much as connecting the blocks themselves.Who cares as long as he is happy and occupied!

I was worried that my 15 month-old will be to young to start playing with Legos, but she proved me wrong. She loves them and can play even alone. These are little bit smaller than the first set we got, but still bigger than their regular size for older kids. I would recommend this toy to everyone with small children: it improves their motorical skills and coordination.

Quests of the Roundtable

Quests of the RoundtableThis game is extremely fun, according to two 10 year olds and a 13 year old boy.All three of them could not wait to play again and to share this game with friends.Even the almost-14-yearold loved it immediately!!We have played four games in the first week. The instructions seemed complicated until we just tried it and all the kids caught on without any trouble. The boys especially appreciated the knight/medieval theme.Girls might not appreciate it quite as much but you never know.I highly recommend it as a good family game.

As devotees of over Gamewright games, we figured this one was a good bet. We weren't dissapointed. Quests of the Round Table is a very fun game.

Because each game can go in a number of different directions, it has great replay value. There is considerable strategy involved too. Basically, you play a character, starting out as a weak squire and eventually making it to become a Knight of the Round Table. To get there, you must go on quests, slaying foes, passing tests and entering tournaments.

Each player gets a chance to sponsor quests, which means they choose the challenges at each stage of the quest that the other players will face. Quests can have as few as two to as many as five stages. Each stage can be a foe (which you defeat by being stronger) or a test (which you pass by bidding away your very valuable adventure cards).

Your strength and rank go up each time you survive a quest. One of the great things about this game is that is as much fun and rewarding to sponsor a quest as it is to go on one. If you sponsor a quest, you are rewarded with more adventure cards to use in other quests, and it is a lot of fun to set up challenges for the other players. Of course, it is fun to go on a quest and defeat the foes.

The only real educational value in this game is the exposure to the Arthurian legends. But this game is for fun anyway. The rules seem complicated at first but they really aren't. Once you play the game it will be easy.

Great game. Broad appeal.I play it with my son and daughter. One may wish to modify the rules slightly with young players (so they can keep as many of the cards as they can hold, as opposed to keeping only a few), but otherwise it worked fine with our son when he was 8, as well as with our cousin who was 50.

A friend of mine introduced me to this game during a slow weekend and I love it! It's entertaining, challenging, and not at all repetitive. The rules are about as hard as those for "Risk" and it's best to have a practice game or two so everyone can get used to them.

For the record, I'm 19 and the people who play this are also in the 19-23 age group. I think it would be great for anyone 8 or older. It won't be boring or too easy for parents, either, and it's probably great for building some strategy skills.

During gameplay, we lost several of the shields down the back of the couch and had to search for them. They're small and might get lost, but you don't actually need them-you can easily use a notepad to keep score.

Quests to slay wild boars, repel Saxon raiders, or overcome evil knights, and tournaments against other worthy players are the stuff of Quests of the Round Table, a fast-paced card game set in the England of King Arthur.

Quests of the Round Table is intended for two to four players, and can be played in about an hour. Components include 125 adventure cards, 28 story cards, 12 rank cards (three for each player), 40 shield tokens in four colors (10 for each player), and a rules book, which includes a brief history of the legends of King Arthur, short biographies of several notable characters, and a suggested reading list.

Game mechanics are fairly simple. Each turn a story card determines the turn's action, which includes the possibility of a quest, a tournament, or some other occurrence. Players maintain a hand of cards and use them to construct quests for other players to attempt, enter upon quests themselves, and compete in tournaments. Success in quests and tournaments results in the award of shields, which are accumulated to advance in rank from Squire, to Knight, to Champion Knight, to Knight of the Round Table.

If a quest card is drawn, a player can sponsor the quest, using his cards to build a multi-stage series of obstacles for the other players. Those who wish to can embark on the quest, using their adventure cards to overcome the foes and tests on the progressively more difficult stages of the quest. The adventure cards are really quite attractive, and depict colorful weapons, allies, and foes.

The game is recommended for ages 10 and over. A 10-year-old can certainly be taught the game and will enjoy it, but probably should not simply be handed it to figure out on their own.

Once players master the rules, Quests of the Round Table moves quickly. The rules themselves are brief, and can be read through in about 15 minutes. However, a few points are not explicitly explained, and players will need to address them. For example, can a player sponsor the "Boar Hunt" quest if he does not have the Boar foe card, or the "Repel the Saxon Raiders" quest if she does not have one of the Saxon cards? Presumably, such unclarities will be remedied in future rules editions.

Such points are minor, however, and ultimately do not mar the enjoyment of this well-executed game.

Imaginarium Figure 8 Train Set - 29 Pieces

Imaginarium Figure 8 Train Set - 29 PiecesMy son is only 21 months old.Not only would I have thought he wasn't old enough to like this sort of thing, but I swore we weren't going to get sucked into the wooden train set thing, seeing how much a friend of mine has spent on Thomas parts and sets.Surprise...last week we visited DH's mother in MI (we live in CA) and she had her boys' old Brio trains from when they were little, and my boy went nuts for them! This is really the first toy I have seen him sit and play with for any length of time.Grandma won't give them up because she wants all the grandkids to play with them, so I started looking into buying some for ourselves.

Ikea has some train sets that are very affordable, but the tracks are not all wood and the cars are kind of boring (although as DH points out so are the old Brio cars not sure how Brio is now). The Imaginarium line is all wood and costs just a tad bit more than the Ikea stuff but considerable less than the Thomas stuff. There are some things in the Thomas line that are very nice and might be worth paying extra for, but I don't think it takes a degree in rocket science to see that making the bulk of your set with Imaginarium pieces is a smart plan. The primary difference between this and the Thomas set is, the tracks in the Imaginarium line are completely plain whereas Thomas tracks have "ties" printed on them. Not a big deal IMO.

Very nice little set, very nice little price. There was another Imaginarium 8 track with pieces I thought were a little corny basically blocks with things like a clock printed on but the pieces in this set strike a nice compromise between TOO simple and overly fancy.

Now I am looking forward to going crazy with this train thing.Imaginarium has a very nice train table w/ a *lot* of pieces, too I'm thinking that's going to be a Christmas or birthday gift this winter.

edit 12/25/05 I hate to edit this and risk losing my helpful votes but a while after buying this train set, I started thinking that the Imaginarium and Thomas trains are not 100% compatible.I'd mention this in the "train car pack" reviewas we recieved this item today and it confirmed my theory but that item is no longer available and can't be reviewed.

So here is the problem. All the trains can run on all the tracks and they can all be connected in some fashion. But the magnets on the Imaginarium engines are set up so that you can only attach an engine to another Imaginariam engine if they face the same way...you can only attach a Thomas engine and an Imaginarium engine if the engines face opposite ways.Face to face or butt to butt.It has to do with the poles of the magnets. We aquired a few Thomas engines and I realized this problem which is minor but annoying.I solved it with this set by prying the magnets off the Imaginarium engine with a butter knife, moving the front to the back and the back to the front, and whacking them back in.So now I can attach my Imaginarium and Thomas trains and they can all face the same way.The non-engine cars in this figure 8 set are symmetrical, there is no obvious front or back, so you don't have to worry about the magnets on them.

This is a VERY small point but it's kind of annoying.I suspected this was done as one of those little things so a company can get away with making a knock-off without making the people at the original company too mad.The trains are compatible but not fully so, only if the engines face opposite directions. In the real world, trains can face any direction, engines can pull or push coupled to cars facing forward or backward, but if you wanted a train with the power of two engines, the engines are most likely going to face the same way and from an aesthetical standpoint, it just looks better.

Today we got the train car pack for Christmas and notcied the same issue with the polarity of the engine. The magnets on those cars are attached in a different fashion, so they can't be pulled out and whacked back in.Plus the engine only has a magnet in the back so it can only pull trains, it can't be coupled behind another engine to make a train with two engines.

Anyway I still give this product 5 stars since the problem is fixable.;-)When you pull the magnet out, you may have the problem of the magnet itself, the little metal spike inside, and the metal cap kind of falling apart...that happened on one end for me.JUST WHACK IT HARD I banged it against a door frame and it should all go back together.Just make sure the magnet is facing the right way, if you drop it and lose your focus.

I kind of worry they may start making it so you can't switch the magnets, though, which would not be a huge crisis but still unfortunate.

Honestly, this was money very, very well spent. All three of my kids enjoy playing with it from ages 1 1/2 to 11 yrs old!The cars and engine that come with it are very high quality, truly better than the brio set we already owned from the 80's.They are bigger and chunkier but have the same wheel base. The accessories are cute, too!We bought the expansion set of track pieces, also, but it really wasn't necessary. If your child wants a lot of options, buy the imaginarium deluxe set because there are wonderful peices that are not in the figure 8 set or the expansion set. This is compatible with brio trains and track pieces and a much better value.

Our 2 1/2 year old daughter loves to play with the Thomas Train set at a local educational toy store we frequent. There is always a full blown temper tantrum when we leave so we figured maybe it was worth getting for home...until we saw the price.Today we saw this set in Toys R Us retail location. We decided to start small in case she like playing at the store but got bored quickly at home. She's now been playing with it for 1 1/2 hours straight. She's even managed to completely ignore the fact that there is food around (which she NEVER does!)We will be going back for expansion sets very soon I think.

With all the toys she has with batteries and "bells & whistles" I love the fact that she is so enthralled with a simple wooden train.Best toy we've ever bought her!She is even making animal sound for the cow, horse & piggy.

My 3 year old daughter loves playing with a train set in a local bookstore, so her Aunt bought her this train set for Christmas.

Is is very cute and durable. It comes with an easy to put together wood track and it has three train cars included. She loves it, but I think we are going to purchase the expansion pack that is available, so she can make different tracks for variety.

Oh, she also got a Thomas the train engine and it does work just fine on the track and with the other train cars that came with the set.A good toy, perfect for fueling her imagination!

The excitement on the face of my 3 year old son when we opened the package was a great start. That was 2 months ago, and this set has yet to see the inside of the box again, except for when he insists on taking it with him to grandma's house! When we opened the box, he started grabbing the pieces and trying to put them together immediately. After showing him how to connect the pieces, he was off to the races. Though he still has trouble getting all of the pieces correctly configured into a figure eight, he connects the pieces easily, including his favorite part, the bridge. The trains attach to one another easily with magnets, so there is nothing difficult about getting them to follow one another. If he puts it on wrong, he quickly realizes that the train car is backward, and turns it around. Next thing you know, he and I are yelling "choo choo" and bringing it in to the station!

Another great feature is that the track and trains are the same kind used by Brio and the Thomas the Tank Engine folks. So, you can make up an entire set of Thomas trains and track by buying one each of this or Brio, and one of the more expensive Thomas set.

I highly recommend this for the little ones! It's fun, easy, and will almost certainly get them thinking. My son the engineer said to tell you that!!!

Thomas And Friends Wooden Railway - Early Engineers Busy Day on Sodor Set

Thomas And Friends Wooden Railway - Early Engineers Busy Day on Sodor SetWith my twin boys turning 18mo right around Christmas, I really wanted to love this set.We bought it, along with a train table, and some regular Thomas track, trains and destinations (windmill and water tower) for their big Christmas gift.I thought that this simple set would give the boys something interesting to do on a simple track layout and that I'd put the destinations geared for older kids away for a while if they couldn't handle them.

It turned out that the Early Engineers components were the ones they couldn't handle!First, the track does NOT stay put together. It easily falls apart no matter the configuration. The blue pieces do not hold it together.Second, the "destinations" are poorly designed AND they don't stay put.My boys were naturally not too gentle when trying to turn the coal hopper and washdown and almost every time they ended up knocking them completely over and off the track.I'd have had to glue them in place to keep them attached. The "roundhouse" was even worse. When my boys would try to push the trains over the "roundtable" they would come off the track every time.Even my husband and I couldn't get them to stay on the track unless holding onto the train the entire time and guiding it along. Finally, the trains themselves, while they will run on the normal track, will not pass under/through the normal destinations and bridges. They are too tall. They also seem unbalanced to me because they are so tall compared to their length.

If your kids are on the edge of the recommended age for the normal Thomas sets, I would advise you to get a couple of normal trains and a simple configuration of track (oval or figure eight) and maybe one simple destination and see how they handle it.Chances are, they'll be fine after a little trial and error, making a set like this completely unnecessary even if it wasn't completely frustrating.

My son received the Early Engineers set as a gift for his 1st Birthday. He is 2 now and still plays with this set EVERY day, and at least an hour or so. I love the Early Engineers line, as it grows with your child. At first my son would just push the trains along the track. Now he can put the track together and put all of the pieces on. He is learning to be gentler with the set and use for its intended purpose. We will be adding new track now that he is getting more confident building tracks. Great investment! Would highly recommend!

My eighteen month old daughter has the complete Early Engineers set and a few of the engines that go along with the line. It's been a hit since she saw it in the box at the toy store and still is!

She, like most toddlers, loved her preschool Thomas train table; however, the table and assorted accessories retails for hundreds of dollars and we simply couldn't afford it. Setting up a smaller wooden railway set on the floor wasn't an option at this age, since I knew my daughter would tear it apart, walk over it, and accidentally knock it over within a matter of minutes.

The Early Engineers line allows her to play with her trains, even at this young age. The destinations are large and interactive, so they're easy to manipulate and keep her attention. I like that we'll be able to expand the set with other Thomas wooden railway accessories as she grows olderand that it encourages imaginative play!

As some have mentioned, the Early Engineers engines will not fit under most Thomas wooden railway bridges, but as she grows older we'll more than likely replace the larger Early Engineers engines with regular sized ones anyway. This line has been discontinued, so they won't be releasing anymore Early Engineers destinations, tracks, or engines. However, we've been able to find some really great deals on this line at local discount stores, and toy store clearance aisles for this reason. Admittedly, this set has a few flaws but my daughter thinks it's a great set and so do I.

I bought this when our son was nearing age 2, thinking it would transition him to the "regular" Thomas tracks and provide cute "destinations" for him to add to the tracks. It sat on our coffee table and was used for a bit, but it didn't seem to do much and I didn't realize half the fun would be the building of the track itself...there is no track to build on this, just two large pieces with the track built in connected with plastic blue pieces (the roundhouse and wash/coal drop are placed onto it, but don't really snap into place they fall out easily and will come out if you go to lift it by any of them).

Anyhow, we bought regular tracks to add in the hopes of breathing some life into this toy and found that the blue connectors don't really fit into regular tracks (it is too big though it can be jammed in). The trains that come with the set, which are larger and seemingly easier for small hands to grip, don't fit under lots of the structures (bridges, etc.) for the regular Thomas tracks so my son gets frustrated when he is tugging a long chain of engines around and it gets caught on one of these engines.

Recommendation: Don't buy to use at home. Save the money and put it towards a set made for "older" kids. The best use for this set, since it is two track pieces and the components snap on, is to keep at a grandparent's house or babysitter, since it is relatively quick and easy to set up and dismantle and will entertain young conductors.

I got this for a friend's kid who is really into Thomas the Train but is a bit too young for the normal sets.He loves playing with this set.He doesn't always keep the train on the track (his trains tend to run on carpet, couches, etc)but when he does use the set the way it was designed it it works well.

Wild Republic Frog Green Spot w/ SoundThis is a great toy for frog lovers. It not only allows them to have a frog during the winter it allows them the comfort of not accidentally squeezing the life out of it.The ribbitsound is very realistic. I would recommend this to anyone who has a young person who likes frogs.

Attack! By Eagle Games

Attack! By Eagle GamesI wouldn't say I'm a know-it-all when it comes to board games, but I do know what is fun (for me).

I started getting re-addicted to Risk about a year ago, but I wanted more strategy and more depth.I looked around and purchased Axis and Allies World Edition.I found that game a little too deep, it felt like I was playing a computer game.It was difficult to keep track of things and it took almost 1.5 hours just to set up!Anyway, if you are looking for something incredibly deep and almost a simulator of WWII, then go with Axis and Allies.

That's when I purchased Attack! (I just saw it in the hobby shop and went for it).I have never made a better choice with a board game. It's a beautiful mix of random play (like Risk), and depth (like Axis/Allies).The game takes about 2-4 hours to play, 30 min to set up (including teaching someone new how to play) and an incredible amount of time to master.

The key component that I should point out, and the part that I love, is the random play.I feel this is what really makes Risk a great game. For example:If I have played Axis and Allies for awhile I would know what my first 3 moves would be if I was USA.That to me is not fun, the game is always the same.

Now Attack! gives you that random play that Risk is so good at.In Attack! the start of the game is always different because youstart in different territories every game (depending on when you go in the rotation). The game is always different, and makes for some good post-game stories :)

Lastly this is only half of the game, and it's totally different when you have the expansion as well. This game feels kind of kiddy at first because it's so basic but when you get the expansion things become much more involved. So I highly reccomend the expansion as well (I see here at Amazon they are incredibly cheap too...)

First off I'll state that you should definentely get the expansion for this, it's just not complete without it.

Now, you can think of this as either a complicated version of risk, or a simplified Axis and Allies, either way, you get an amazing game.A basic description of this game would be that it is a somewhat generic WWII based game where a player will have to wage war until he/she captures the enemy(s) capital(s).There is a small helping of economy and politics thrown in for good measure, but it is mostly military gameplay.

In the original game (this one) you get half of the planet to play on, but the expansion gives you the rest of the board, as well as hundreds of naval minitures which are not included in this original.

The gameplay is fun, different every time, only as difficult as your opponent(s).

Some tips I will give from my experience playing this game...

Play with at least 3 people, preferably 4-6

Set aside PLENTY of time, preferably across 2 or 3 days. (The game takes around 6 hours to fully complete with 4 people)

Use Poker Chips instead of the included Paper bills for money, they don't crumple up like paper does.

Clip the Original and Expansion boards together with paperclips to keep them in place

And finaly, use whatever means needed to acheive victory over your enemys! Diplomacy, Bribeing, Backstabbing, Doubledealing, or just good old fasioned military supremacy.

Overall:

Pros:

Fun

Social

Large Board

Tons of peices

Overall nicely made (quality)

Cons:

Takes a while, set time aside

Somewhat Generic WWII game

Like other reviews say, this is good if you want a souped-up version of Risk.Pros: Giant map, pretty easy to play (my 8 year old can play it), lots of pieces, durable construction. The only con (if it is a con) is that it takes a long time to play--it takes about 3-4 hours with 4 people. But we'll worth the incredibly cheap price.
