I love this toy and all its add-ons. I love also that it's so affordable, and everything goes with everything else. I was so much of a lego fan in my childhood that I was hoping to expose the 7 year old in my life to it ... alas, to my and my boyfriend's dismay, she ended up neither a linkin' logs nor lego fan claiming they were 'boy toys.' Boy toys?!? Since when? Sigh, what's a modern-day creative feminist to do? We were looking to buy toys that help build the creative spark, not endorse those old nuclear gender roles... problem is, how do you do it while catering to her pink and frilly side (not me, I assure you, heh!) Anyway, we all caught sight of this kit last christmas in a local department store and finally found success for our finicky female!

Everything is supra colorful and durable with reusable color-form decorations. I have to admit we all have a pretty good time playing with her. All pieces are based upon a flat plastic building piece which is joined with dimensional blocks or spheres or even rods. It's almost a pop/modrian/surrealist building kit. children can build and rebuild to their hearts content and limited only by their imaginations: characters, animals, weird landscapes, buildings sky's the limit. quality, creativity, reusability, easy to store, easy to pick up and best of all, PRICE! I wish this toy was around when we were scrounging for the last few xmases, not just the last one! I think it's probably appropriate from 5 year onward.

I disagree with the previous reviewer "Great toy to play WITH your kid."We first purchased an ello set for our daughter when she was 3 (nearly 4).She loved it!She is able to play at length with her sets (we have since purchased another), and looks forward to adding to her collection.Her favorite play activity is creating a house or work space and the people to fill them. We will be surprising her with the jungle ello over Hannukah. Indeed, ello is enjoyable and creative enough that we have fun playing with it, too!

I've bought hundreds of products from Amazon and this is my first review. Why am I writing it??? Because I hope Mattel will see how much girls like Ello and will make many more sets.

My daughter is a naive 8 1/2 and cannot stop saying how much she loves it. It's the first toy I've EVER given her that she has played with independently. Oh wiat -she played with her cash register, too. She's mostly blind in one eye and her fine motor skills are not the best, so other small toys have been difficult for her. She got the knack of Ello quickly and is so very excited to be building things. We tried Lego Clickits but they didn't engage her highly developed sense of fantasy. After less than an hour with Fairytopia she had a queen fairy, a multi-room "castle" and magic wands for different purposes. I was grinning from ear to ear.

Her 7 year old, Bionicle-crazed brother came into her room to check out the action and had soon created a light saber, ant and dive bombing airplane!

This is a great toy and I do hope Mattel gets the message and adds additional sets regularly. Girls need and deserve this kind of entertainment!

You can make some really neat houses with these sets.

It takes a lot of planning and effort to make complicated structures that will actually stand firm, so if your child is under 8 or so you'll have to help (its a good Idea to play with your child anyway!)

My daughter and I dont like the little ello figures, theyre too fragile to play with (no fun!). I recomend that you get some other little figures like my little pony or hamtaro minatures to "live" in your ello houses.

This has been one of the greatest additions to our toydom. My three girls (bought this at ages 9 and 5 and 5, still using at 15, 11, 11) and sometimes my architect trained husband take over the living room, forget to eat and never tire of this toy. It has inspiring colors, shapes and is easy to use. Only limited by their imagination, they have built towers taller than themselves, spread their metropolis into other rooms and create the most amazing creatures and people. The challenge now is to find the perfect storage unit...(still looking!).
