Isle of Lewis Chess Set - Unique Themed Chess Pieces

I have been fascinated with the Isle of Lewis pieces for awhile and put this item on my wish list. It cost about 1/3 less than the other same design sets so of course I thought hey that wins.

However they are cheaply cast and the detail that makes Isle of Lewis so charming is poor.

The description says that it comes with a chess board but it only came with a vinyl sheet that has a chess board marked on it.

Essentially you get what you pay for. This is not a quality collectors set.

This Isle of Lewis Chess Set (pieces and pawns) is an absolute treasure in my opinion. My decision to buy this product came down to the product description given by Amazon andthe seller---how close to the originals these replicas are stated to be. I wanted something as close to the real thing as possible for a good price. I was not disappointed. These pieces and pawns exceeded my expectations. They are a nice size and weight; they stand nicely--no unevenness or wobbles. Each member of this set seems to have its own unique personality, which makes for an interesting study beyond chess playing. (I've uploaded some images for this product for you to view.) There is an antique, human-made feel about these objects that adds to their appeal. They are not TOO perfect---welcomed in today's world of machine-wrought multi-copies. One suggestion that I have is when they arrive, open the box and set them out for a while as the smell of their new finish can be quite potent, if you have a sensitive nose.. I suppose the finish aroma is probably from being packed and shipped.:)//My favorite piece is the Maple King. More than a game item, he's an fine bit of art with his detailed, bearded face and his regal throne. The Ivory King seems a bit chubbier and younger in his little persona. The chess set would make an exciting classroom addition. You could build whole lessons about observation, strategy, and critical thinking with them. This set would also make a great graduation and / or Christmas gift. The vinyl board allows you to play of course; however, once you see these chessmen, you'll want one of those nice boards to compliment them. Do a bit of searching on Amazon to see the boards available. // Yes, Harry Potter fans will find this set intriguing as well, but remember this set is purely Muggle...no magic other than that of your own imagination and perhaps, chess skills! LOL

This is a nice novelty chess set.It came carefully packed in foam that isolated each piece.

That said, I suggest you spend some time with one of the recent museum books that show what the real Lewis Isle chess men look like.

This set has none of the individual charm or detail that makes the real thing such a marvel. If I may use an automotive comparison, this set is

sort of like a Ford Mustang compared to a Porsche.It may be good, but not in the same class.

I ordered thiS set as a gift. The pieces have a substantial feel to them: practical and good-looking. We ended up buying a chess table because this set is too big for a standard chess board. (As others have mentioned, the roll-up chess board that comes with this will do in a pinch, but it's not ideal.)
