Civilization: The Board Game

Civilization: The Board GameWith this board game, you get a very good board game approximation of the Civilization games on the computer and console (Civ Rev on the consoles). If you do not already know what the Civ games are, then you should consider whether you want to invest the time learning and playing the game.If you are an old-school Risk or Axis and Allies player, then you might have what it takes.(Risk is simplistic compared to this.)I have played several games and have taught several players. Many players into lighter board games have not liked it because it is too long (or too "heavy").I recommend that new players play through until the whole map is displayed, then consider whether they want to re-start (with a new random map).Getting that far will take at least 4 hours if it is their first time to play, especially if you are reading the rules for the first time.Add in another hour if you haven't opened the box and punched out all the pieces. The best reason to approach the game in this way, is that if some players have a tendency to consider their move too much, you can always goad them to do something by reminding them that it is just a practice game.

If you like Civ on the computer already, get it, provided you can find 1 to 3 more players. The game scales well with 2, 3 or 4 players, so don't feel that you need a full 4.(I prefer it with 2, since there is less down-time.)

Head over to the Board Game Geek website and check out some of the video reviews of this board game. That website is the best source of information for all board games.(I am not affiliated with them in any way other than being a long time member and fan.)Here is a link to the page for this game.

After 4 games, I would like to share my impressions and rules details.

We are are 2 player household and I think it will be very seldom we play this game with more players.

I think the most important I have to mention is, that both players simultaneously said that this game is more Civ than any other Civ boardgame before. It definitely feels more Civ-like and it plays more Civ-like. It is very difficult to assure my friend playing games with 3 or more hours, but this time it is easier than ever.

For us there is only one minor contra I have to mention: there are a lot technologies, but while playing you can figure out what you need next. If you follow a special strategy you will pick up the techs you need quickly and set back those you don't need. We do not feel upset by small figures or cards. Just the loading space for every game component is laughable. It is not possible to save any components well until you buy pleno boxes. You will need them definitely.

The Pro's: the game mechanics are amazing. The culture with its cultural action cards is my favorite. At one moment I was surrounded by 2 armies and I choose to go 2 steps forward at the cultural line, getting 2 cultural action cards, both the same (what a luck) and both allowed to be used in the next movement phase. It was "defection", meaning that I can kill a figure (so the army flag on the board is a figure) within 4 squares of my position. Since I was surrounded by 2 armies, I could kill both figures (not the armies) and my opponent was really not amused.

So my conclusion: my top game for a while I think. We love it, you should get it as soon as possible.

The Rules

I am always the one who reads the rules and than has to explain them. So I did here, too. The rules are clear written, easy to understand (even for me as a non-native speaker) and easy to explain. The only part I had to read more than once was combat, because it's better to play an example than to read it. In one case I could not find the meaning of a "2" on the barrack building, but after a short search I found it. 14 pages of the rules are explanations of tiles and how to setup start. Once you have done it, you know it. Perfect!!

The Civilizations and the Map

We played the luck of the draw as Bismarck und Catherine of Russia. While playing I saw that there is no single strategy for a civilization, even if the capital is always on the same tile (if you wish to do so in future games). It definitely depends on the map you discover. Discovering a new map means you flip over the map. Every map has a white arrow on it. The map is arranged in the way that the arrow shows away from the figure which entered the new map part (If the figure comes from South, the arrow shows to North.). It's funny to see that the opponent is surrounded by water without having invented navigation or sailing yet.

Every civilization has a starting government (most are Despotism with no affect at the beginning) and 2 special abilities. Russia's starting government is communism, gaining one culture at the start of every turn, so I decided to go the way of the culture first (later I switched to tech, unfortunately). Russias special ability is 2 more hammer in its capital and a second army figure right from the beginning of the game.

Bismarck for example has 2 infantries extra at start which is horrible for an early fight against him. All other Civs will be played next.

Here is the summary of all Civs:

The Egyptians: start with a free ancient wonder drawn at random in their capital. Once per turn, during City Management, the Egyptians may build an unlocked building for free by using an action. Starting Gov: Despotism, Starting Tech: Construction (level 2 Tech).

The Romans: the Romans advance one space on the culture track for free each time they build a wonder or a city, and each time they conquer a city or village. Starting Gov: Republic (Your armies may build cities as though they were scouts. Your scouts may explore huts, but not villages.), Starting Tech: Code of Law (level 1 Tech)

The Americans: The Americans start with a free random great person in their capital. Each time the Americans convert 3 trade into production, they receive 2 production (hammer) instead of 1. Starting Gov: Despotism, Starting Tech: Currency(level 1 Tech).

The Chinese: The Chinese start with city walls in their capital. The Chinese gain 3 culture each time they explore a hut or conquer a village. The Chinese may save one of their killed units after each battle, returning it to their standing forces. Starting Gov: Despotism, Starting Tech: Writing (level 1 Tech).

The Germans: The Germans start with 2 extra infantry units. After setup, each time the Germans research a tech that upgrades or unlocks a unit, they build one of that unit for free and gain one resource of their choice from the market. Starting Gov: Despotism, Starting Tech: Metal Working (level 1 Tech).

The Russians: the Russians start with 2 armies, and their stacking limit is increased by 1. Once per turn, the Russians may move an army or scout into an enemy city and sacrifice that figure to research a tech known by that civilization for free. Armies sacrificed this way cannot also attack. Starting Gov: Communism (Each of your cities generates 2 extra hammer/production. Your capital produces 1 less culture when devoted to the arts.), Starting Tech: Communism (level 3 Tech).

Gameplay

There are 5 turns in every round.

I. Start Turn

BUILDING NEW CITIES

If you have fewer built cities than your maximum number of cities (at start: 2, with Irrigation 3, more cities do not exist) you can build one or more new cities on the map. Use your scout figure in a square, press B remove the scout and found a new city by placing a city marker unwalled side up. There are several requirements for settling (I don't want to got into details). The city center never generates anything as long as there is a city on that square. Never! Only the outskirt squares provide icons and resources.

CHANGING GOVERNMENT

Governments get unlocked through tech cards. At the start of the game players have only unlocked the Despotism government (exception: Rome and Russia).

Once a player unlocks a new form of government during Research Phase (learning a new tech), they may change to that government during the Start of Turn Phase of the following turn. In that case place the goverment card at your civilization sheet.

A player can only change directly to the new found government next turn without Anarchy. If you want to change to another (also available) government, you will have Anarchy. After being in Anarchy for a complete turn cyclus, you can change to any other government during the Start of Turn Phase of the next turn.

GOVERNMENTS

Anarchy: Your capital loses its action this turn. Next turn you may change to a different government you've unlocked.

Fundamentalism: Your battle hand size is increased by +1. You collect 2 less trade than normal each turn.

Communism: Each of your cities generates 2 extra production/hammer. Your capital produces 1 less culture when devoted to arts.

Democracy: You collect 2 extra trade each turn. Your armies cannot attack cities.

Republic: Your armies may build as though they were scouts. Your scouts may explore huts (but not villages).

Despotism: no effects

Monarchy: Your capital generates 1 extra culture when devoted to arts. Your culture hand size is increased by 1.

Feudalism: Each of your cities may harvest resources found in your other cities. Put one coin token on the card as income as long as you are in Feudalism.

II. Trade

COLLECTING TRADE

Count all your trade symbols in all your cities and increase your trade dial on the civilization (maximum is 27 trade). Unlike production, trade is saved from turn to turn if you don't spent it.

SCOUTS AND BLOCKADES

If a scout is somewhere outside your city outskirts and there is a trade symbol on it, the scout also gathers that trade. Scouts have other gathering functions, which are mentioned later.

If there is an enemy figure in your city's outskirt, your city does not produce trade on that square.

NEGOTIATIONS BETWEEN PLAYERS

After trade is collected, players may negotiate among themselves. Objects of negotiating are:

non-binding promises

points of trade

unspent culture tokens

resource tokens (from the market or from hut/village tokens)

culture event cards (attention to the culture hand size!)

Other objects may not be traded.

III. City Management

You can do one of the following 3 turns this phase in each of your cities.

(A) PRODUCING A FIGURE, UNIT, BUILDING OR WONDER

Count the total production of one city which is displayed as hammers in a cities outskirt. You cannot combine the hammers of 2 or more cities, but you can change 3 trade into 1 hammer (as often as you want) on your civilization sheet.

You have to decide between producing a figure OR a unit OR a building OR a wonder.

After producing a FIGURE(army flag or scout) the figure is set in the cities outskirt, not on the city or water tile (until you can enter water tiles). There can be only as much figures in a quare as your stacking limit allows to you (2 at the beginning).

UNITS represent your standing force, which is always only one pool of cards regardless how many flag figures you have on the map. At the beginning of the game there is a small colored unit marker for every player under the unit pile for infantry, artillery, mounted units and aircrafts, showing a rank 1 symbol. Every time you research a technology allowing you to upgrade a unit sort, you switch the marker to the level you just reseached. You can only buy units of the current rank, so if you reseached rank 2 infantry you can no longer build rank 1 infantry, which would of cause cheaper for you. The higher the rank the more expensive a unit. Every unit has a strenght value which is random since you draw a bought unit at random. The higher the rank the higher the strenght value can be.

There are standard BUILDINGS, upgraded and limited ones. Every building can only be placed in a specific terrain. The buildings are (the "-->" means "upgrades to"; the "*" means limited building):

Harbor (water)

trading post (desert)

workshop --> iron mine (mountain)

library --> university / granary --> aqueduct (grassland)

market* --> bank* / temple* --> cathedral* / barracks* ---> academy* (any terrain except water)

There can be only one limited building in one city, but as many stadard buildings you like. Limited buildings can me removed by overbuild them with a new (standard/limited or wonder building). By placing a building the original resources from a square are completely gone and replaced by the resources the building is producing.

Producing a Wonder is the same as a building. You pay the hammer and put the wonder tile in your city's outskirt, placing the wonder card in front of you. Wonders can get obsolete by technologies, if so, the square tile remains and produces culture (ancient wonders produce 1 culture, medieval 2 and modern 3 if the city devotes to the art). Wonder may be replaced (and made obsolete) by a player placing another building (standard, limited or wonder) on it.

(B) DEVOTE A CITY TO THE ARTS

Choosing that option, a city gathers all culture a city owe. The city itself produces 1 culture (can be changed by cultural action, techs or goverments), for every culture symbol you get one extra culture.

At any point duirng the City Management phase you can spent the culture on the cultural track at the market boad. There are 3 cultural levels, getting one space forward on the track in level 1 costs 3 cultural token, level 2 costs 5 cultural token and 3 trade, level 3 costs 7 cultural token and 6 trade for every space you want to go forward. For every space you enter you are getting a cultural action card, containing a wide range of actions. Entering a Great People Space gets you a free Great People to be placed immediately in a city's outskirt. Entering the last space, you win by Cultural Victory.

(C) HAREVST RESOURCES

A city may harvest one resource in its city's outskirt. If a scout is on a map tile with a resource, it provides the resource to a city if you want to.

IV. Movement

Your moving range by start is 2, so every single unit can move 2 space (not diagonal) in the movement phase. If a unit enters a hut or a village, movement ends immediately. Scouts can enter huts only under Republic Government. Moving range is increased by technologies (e.g. Horseback Riding). If a unit enters a new map tile which is unexplored, your unit stops at the square of the old map tile, flipping the unexplored map tile and placing it with the with arrow away from the figure which explored the new map.

V. Research

Research costs are shown on the trade dial. Technologies level 1 cost 6 trade, level 2 cost 11 trade, level 3 cost 16 trade, level 4 cost 21 trade and level 5 (technology victory) cost 26 trade. If you buy a technology, your trade dial is set to "0" trade, irrespective how much trade you would have left buy a technology. So if you owe 22 trade and you have to buy a level 1 technology because of the technology pyramid, you have 0 trade after buying it. The only way saving trade is having gold on the coin dial. For every coin you have on your coin dial, you can save 1 trade when buying a technology, and only when buying a technology. Coins are not used for something else except Economic Victory.

After buying a technology, you place it in a line. Level 1 techs are placed like the base line of a pyramid. For 2 level 1 techs you can buy a level 2 tech, placing it like a triangle over the level 1 techs. You would need to buy another level 1 tech in this example for buying another level 2 tech.

Civilization is not for lazy readers who refuse to invest a few hours in learning how to play a new game.

That said, this is an awesome experience.Already my roommates and other friends have played several games, and now that many of us know the rules thoroughly each game will take less and less time to complete.

Yes, the rule book is sometimes ambiguous, yes it takes nearly a half hour to set up, and yes the games can take up a lot of daylight. Our first 4-player game took about 7 hours, but it was intense and exciting and ultimately we friends had an excellent time in each other's company.Having learned how to play and gotten used to the pace, we've completed more recent games in as little as 3 hours.

The depth that was put into this game is incredible; for every action there is a proportional counter-move.Think chess and Risk combined, but far more complicated. You can really tell that the makers spent countless hours testing and retesting to make sure everything about the game meshes together.

I'll say it again, if you have time (several hours) to learn how to play this board game, access to 4 patient people who are willing to play, then absolutely buy this game.

If, on the other hand, you doubt you will have the time or patience to learn how to play and actually get a game in, forget it, this is not for you.Don't expect it to be exactly like the PC game. You will find that many of the strategies used there will not help you in the board game.Another important thing to note is that you will need a LOT of space to play, especially when playing with 4 people.Probably the entire dining room table.

If this sounds like something you'd enjoy, and you have some free time to invest, go for it; you won't regret it.

Let us be clear here. This is not a quick family game in the vein of Settlers of Catan. This is a large, complex game that will take the better part of a day to complete. The box estimates 3-4 hours for a game. I would say that would be true for 2 players, but with 3 you're looking at 5 hours easily, and a 4 player game would be close to 6 hours.

Setup alone takes a good 20 minutes, and if you're playing for the first time, block off an hour to pop out all the little pieces. And maybe a couple of hours to read the long, in-depth instruction manual. And be prepared to get some rules wrong on the first few tries. It takes a while to understand everything about the game, particularly the combat system.

Having said all of thisthe game is excellent. Truly excellent. But you shouldn't buy it making the mistake of thinking it is anything other than a time consuming, immersive experience. Otherwise you will be disappointed.

The game allows for four different way to win, giving the player the opportunity to decide if they want to be a military civilization, one full of culture, or a bit of both. Having played Civ II on PC for a looooong time when it came out, I can say there are close similarities to the video game it is based on, but this stands on its own.

I love this game. The thought that went into it is outstanding. But it is not for everyone.

The game has a steep learning curve. Be prepared to have a few discussions into the rules with other players. Once you've mastered the general rules, be ready to have hours of fun. No game is ever the same, although some tecniques to win it will become apparent.

Deluxe Art Center

Deluxe Art CenterThis table was a Christmas present for my 6 and 3 year old. They love it!

The table itself if fairly sturdy. The whole thing is all wood. The only part that I had trouble with were the stool legs. They didn't fit perfectly but I was able to get them adjusted tightly nonetheless.

The storage boxes that come with the unit look a bit cheesy as they are plain white and a bit shallow. We picked up some dark brown and tan boxes from Target that look great. It's a great place to store all the art supplies, crayons, etc. for the kids.

Overall, I am very happy with this purchase and several of my friends have commented on how much they liked it as well.

This artist table is wonderful!! My kids love the chairs, and all the shelves and cubby spacing for all their pencils, crayons, etc.My daughter loves coming home from school and going straight to her desk to color. The only negative would be to be careful to inspect the desk when it arrives because ours came with the cardboard box beaten up a little bit but we were lucky and found no damage to the desk pieces when we opened everything and looked.

This unit looks just like it's pictured. The stools are small, but my girls don't mind that they're not chairs. It's also a great height for my girls to stand and draw. Having the paper always available is great, because I don't have to constantly replace single sheets. The storage bins are a little flimsy and thin, but they serve their purpose well. We did have a little trouble with assembly because the holes were not properly aligned for a couple screws, but my husband, who is quite handy, was able to make it work. We're definitely pleased with our choice, having searched a long time for the right unit.

This table is great quality (except for the storage bins that come with it.) It was easy to put together and looks great... I even put it in my living room the color fits great. I like all of the storage for art supplies and the paper roll for drawing and coloring. Also, this product arrived damaged and the 3rd party seller quickly refunded all money through amazon.

56 Pieces of Wooden Train Track Compatible with All Major Train Brands By Conductor Carl

56 Pieces of Wooden Train Track Compatible with All Major Train Brands By Conductor CarlWe love this train set!The pieces are made from high-quality wood.Of course, a mother doesn't want to have to worry about splinters, so I appreciate the smooth sanding on all sides of these pieces. It contains 56 pieces of numerous sizes, and the curved and split pieces have grooves on both sides, so the curved pieces can be flipped and used to go either direction. My little brothers grew up with a similar set, but it had loose pegs that held the tracks together. They would get lost, jammed, or even pinch little fingers, so the single-piece construction of these track pieces is terrific, and I don't have to worry about the baby finding any small choking-hazard pegs. There are 8 different kinds of pieces, some strait, curved, long short, and split, so that you can create a practically endless number of different courses. We put a small circular track together in a snap, and still had a huge pile of track pieces to make more, or expand our small one.Conductor Carl, you have a huge fan over here! Thanks for the hours and hours of train fun!I love filling my house with classic, creative toys and allow for hours of using our imagination!

Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Learning Workbench

Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Learning WorkbenchI bought this toy several months ago after seeing it recommended in Parents magazine. My son loves this toy!He loves to pull the knob for the drill press, bang on the pegs and spin the paint roller. This has been the best $25 I've spent in his short life. It's withstood all the banging he can dish out and he loves the lights and music.I like changing the mode from time to time (counting/ABC's, tool sound effects, music) to mix things up for him and he sometimes looks surprised that it's different from the last time he played with it.I think it keeps him from getting bored. He goes through phases with his toys, he'll have favorites for a while, but he always loves this toolbench. We don't go away for a weekend or on vacation without it!

Bought this for my 6 month old, and he loves it. We're learning to sit up, so this is a great toy for him to lean on for some stability while practicing. He really enjoys pressing the buttons and spinning the various tools. I appreciate that it has different modes with different songs and activities, so A) you don't get tired of hearing the same tunes over and over and B) my son stays interested.

As to the comments about stability, of course the toy falls over when children try to stand and lean on it, but what do you expect from a toy of this size? Fisher Price made the legs as stable as they likely could for a toy of this size. I'm really not sure what they could do to improve on it besides making the whole thing larger.

Lots of fun/great price. A toy my son can grow with.

We got this as a gift for my DAUGTHERS 1st B-day! I thought it was a boys toy but she loves it. She uses the hammer to beat that bench to death, its so funny! It lights up and makes realistic noises. It has so much going on it will keep your 9-18 month old busy for sure. Got it quick (3-4 days) and packaged well, no shipping fee! thanks amazon

It's a cute and fun toy, but my 8 month old continuously pulls it into/onto himself.Sometimes completely pulling it to the ground.Needless to say it's very light weight. BUT I do have to say it is fun if you sit and hold it while you play.I'd definitely recommend this toy for a brand new sitter or to help "practice" sitting.

I saw this little work bench at Babies 'R Us months ago and loved it! I immediately wanted to buy it for my little boy, but decided to wait until he was a little older. I bought it a few weeks ago for my son (he is now 4 months old) and the toy is for 6 months +. I didn't think he'd be into it yet so I just had it sitting in the bag in my dining area for a while. One day I decided to put it in his room and I pulled it out of the bag and showed it to him. My son's face lit up and he got all excited so I started playing with it to show him. He LOVED it so I took it out of the packaging then and there and he has played with it every day since! My son still needs support sitting so he sits in his bumbo or on my lap to play with the work bench and he will play with it for 20 min+ until I decide for us to move on to something else. I love it and so does my baby, great toy!

Necron Catacomb Command Barge / Annihilation Barge

Necron Catacomb Command Barge / Annihilation BargeThis is an amazing set, you get your HQ, a possible chariot, and a beastly heavy support all in one. You don't need to glue either the Anni Barge gun down, or the Overlord to the Comm Barge. This way you can switch to which would be the most useful against your opponent.

Great set, Amazon prices are to kill for!

As far as using this in a Necron army... there is never going wrong with a 90 point annihilation barge ESPECIALLY in small games.Command barge is always a win for an overlord or hero, but really the twin linked Tesla destructor on an Annihilation Barge is just sweetness especially against horde armies. The seller sent this the very next day after ordering and it arrived sooner than claimed, which is always good.It was new in box as advertised and there were no defects or damages in any way.Your necron army probably needs a couple of these!

I ordered this to be one of the big gifts for my daughters first Christmas and it isn't even here yet. It was supposed to be at my house by the 21st and here it is Christmas Eve and I am without her big gift! I had to rush out and buy something else because that was going to be from Santa and I have two other kids that would have questioned why their sister didn't get a gift. She is one, so she won't remember but my other kids would have. So as for the quality of the product I cannot yet write a review for that, but if I ever receive it I will gladly add to this.

Lipper Childrens Square Table and Chair Set

Lipper International 514P Child's Square Table and 2-Chair Set, PecanI needed something small for my kitchen, a place for my kids to eat, draw etc.I was looking at more expensive options but decided to try something more affordable. This is exactly what we needed. It cleans up nicely and does not look at all cheap. The assembly is pretty straight forward but a little overwhelming when you pull it all out of the box.It took me about 20 minutes with 2 kids observing!

Made in Thailand, good materials, solid and looks nice. The only thing is that the accuracy of its parts (sizes, positions of pre-drilled holes) are not very good, you can notice it during assembly, but it's not a big problem. The mechanism attaching the 4 legs to the table top is not as good as many other similar assembly methods. Shipping charge is high.

South Shore Furniture, Peak-a-Boo Collection, Changing Table with Drawers, Pure White

South Shore Furniture, Peak-a-Boo Collection, Changing Table with Drawers, Pure WhiteMake sure you read the size of this changing table carefully before you make a decision.I made the mistake of glancing at the size and eye balling the dimensions in our very small nursery. However I am happy with the purchase (I did manage to find a good spot for it)!

It wasn't easy for my husband to put together and in the process he nicked the item a little but I would still recommend this purchase. For $185 with free super saver shipping you just can't beat the price.

The quality of the wood is decent and the pieces came intact.Expect to spend a while trying to put it together especially if you are doing it yourself.

Also note that the white is a true white like the picture. The drawers move in and out easily and the cabinet has 2 large shelves in it.I think it's just lovely and am happy we got it!

Two things that I would have liked to know before purchasing this item, either of which probably would have made me re-think the purchase. First, the back and drawer bottoms are flimsy cardboard, not wood (or "wood product," for that matter). This is more or less fine for the back, but people put things in drawers and sometimes those things are heavy. I would prefer something sturdier.

Second and more importantly, this was truly comically hard to put together. Other reviews mentioned this but don't really emphasize it enough. If someone sat around and thought very hard about how to make assembly maximally time-consuming and frustrating, this might have been the result. The materials are needlessly complex; as but one example, instead of having drawer knobs with embedded screws, which would allow you to just screw the threaded end straight into the drawer, there is a separate knob and a screw, and the instructions call for you to insert the screw both through the drawer and into the knob. Seven times. You are supposed to do this manually, which leads me to my next issue, which is how very, very wrong it is to claim, as the instructions do, that one does not need power tools for this job. I can say precisely when I would have quit had I not already pulled out my drill: at step 21 of 34 (yes, 34, many of which had sub-steps a through c), which called for screwing a 50 mm screw into a piece of presswood with an inadequately pre-drilled hole. It was hard for me to get the screw all the way in using the power drill. I think it would have been impossible without it. The drill also came in handy when I came across several "Robertson screws" to insert, a type of screw that I had never heard of but in any event seems eminently substitutable for a screw that would fit a commonly owned screwdriver. Like, say, a Phillips. Fortunately, we had a drill bit that was apparently Robertson shaped. I could go on, but leaving all this aside, it is the case that we finally got the thing together and I'm 9 months pregnant with a decidedly non-handy husband (I'm not super handy myself). If we can manage, so can others. But use power tools and be prepared to spend 3-5 hours.

I have some other minor complaints as well, such as how dirty and dusty the thing was when delivered. Presswood coated in sawdust is not closer to real wood. It just makes a mess in the baby's room. Another is the large and permanent warning on the back edge of the table top border. You can't see it in the picture on amazon and you can't remove it. It warns that if your baby falls off a four-foot high surface, it could get hurt. I am sufficiently aware of this risk to feel comfortable covering the warning with stickers, but would prefer if it my nice new changing table didn't have nanny-state printed all over it.

In sum, I would not purchase again. However, I'm familiar with the maxim "you get what you pay for." The price is quite low and now that it's all together, I think it will be quite serviceable.

This changing table is huge, it was much bigger than I thought it would be once put together.I am 5'10" and it comes up way past my bellybutton. It is very heavy duty, but very complicated to assemble is the only drawback.

I love this changer considering the price and quality. This type of changing table usually cost a lot more than this.

My only complain is that some of the parts are damaged/chipped. Good thing is you can order the parts through the company with no charge.

The first one we got had 9 pieces that were cracked and dented so we returned it. The return process was fairly easy and the second one we got is working out great! Very big and very white check mesurements and make sure you have enough room. Only neg... plastic sliders for the drawers (we shall see how that holds up)! Good luck!

Step2 Naturally Playful Big Folding Slide

Step2 Naturally Playful Big Folding SlideHere is the scene at our house since we opened the box for this slide. My daughter climbs it, slides down while saying "weeeee", lands perfectly on her feet, runs around to the steps, and starts all over again until she is too tired to continue... which can go on for hours.

We got this slide for her 2nd birthday.Up until we got this we got hints that she wanted a slide when she started making ghetto slides out of cardboard boxes. After doing a bit of research we settled on this slide for a few difference reasons.

1.Its big!She can grow and grow but this slide should last her for years.

2.Its solid Out of all the reviews I could find, this slide was the most sturdy and solid of the bunch. It never feels like its going to tip over, we weighted down the base with sand as well, and the rail on the slide keeps my little princess safe.

3.Angle of the slide Most people might not think about this but the angle at which the child slides down is important. The other similar slides we looked at had a slide that almost was a straight shoot down. This is rough on a little childs legs and gives them a huge force of impact. However this slide has a little cruve at the end which softens the impact and pushes them away from the slide. This was the tipping point for us in our decision!!!

Other nice features but not deciding factors was how you can pull the slide together to put it away and the steps have a nice grip on them for bare feet children.

The only con we have so far is that it was expensive but no more than the others in this class or similar toys.We are concerned about how much bending the plastic will do in prolonged direct sunlight but so far have had no issue there... just a watch and see deal.

In any event my daughter loves this slide and we do too.I highly recomend this to anyone for their kids!

My brother has had this Little Tikes EasyStore Large Slide for quite a few years now, with his 3 daughters using it all summer long. It has held up very well and all his girls still love it. (Ages are 7, 4, and 2.) In the summer months, they will put the end of the slide in a little pool for some water fun. The slide is very stable and large enough for even their very tall 7 year old.

While I really liked this slide, I had been comparing it to the Step2 Naturally Playful Folding Slide and trying to see which was better based on reviews. Very difficult as they are very much the same.

I ended up ordering the Step2 version and I'm very happy with it. There are a few differences that I have noticed.

Little Tikes stability wings at the bottom of the stairs is somewhat flat, but enough for little ones to trip when not paying attention racing to the stairs. The Step2 version has angled wings that have to be put together with the staircase with a couple of screws it says to screw them in with a screwdriver, but I was unable to do this. The wings slide on and stay there unless you lift up the slide to move it, but I'll leave putting the screws in to my mechanically inclined husband so I don't wreck it.

Little Tikes steps seemed to give a little more than my Step2 slide. This may be due to the fact that my brother's Little Tikes version is a few years old and my Step2 is brand new, I'm not sure.

Little Tikes top of the stairs handle is a little shorter than the Step2 version, but not a big deal.

Little Tikes slide has a slight curve/bump in the slide halfway down, while the Step2 version has the curve/bump right at the beginning.

Little Tikes end of the slide has a slight lift, but my nieces and daughter would still fall forward on a fast slide down. The Step2 version has a lot more lift and my 2.5 year old daughter really appreciates it and doesn't fall forward nearly as much.

The Little Tikes dark brown and burgundy is nice as is the Step2's medium brown and grass green. I think I like the brown and green better, but that's just my opinion.

The Little Tikes version seems to be a little lighter in weight than the Step2 Naturally Playful one. I had a harder time lugging the Step2 around than I did the Little Tikes.

They both fold easily and can store on the wall in the garage when not in use which is awesome. Being able to store it somewhere out of the way will definitely keep the slide in great condition for years!

Overall, both great slides and lots of fun. The slide length for both is about 58 inches long. They both stand about 40 inches high (top of handrail to the ground).

I had been eyeing this for a while and finally found a great deal on amazonIt was between this slide and the Little Tikes Easystore Large Slide. After reading reviews regarding the difficulty assembling the Little Tikes Slide, ths seemed the easy choice. So far no complaints! We bought it for indoor use, so the kids can exert some energy during the months when its too cold or too hot to play outdoors.

Here are some of the perks:

1. Large enough to actually be fun.

2. Folds up for storage

3. NO ASSEMBLY REQUIRED!

Here are some of the cons:

1. Large

2. Folds up for storage

3. Our 3 1/2 yr old likes to hang on the plastic black bar you see in the picture. I'm concerned it might break.

You get the good with the bad on this purchase. Fortunately, the bad really isn't so bad. It IS large, and since I bought it for indoor use we really have to open up a space in the room when we bring it out. If your plan is to use it outside then this won't be an issue for you.

I'd say its about 5'5 when folded up. It fold ups easy and narrow. It really is meant to be hung when folded, because its doesn't stay together. There aren't any safety clips or anything. We have yet to hang it, so when its folded up against the wall we have to make sure its leaning or wedged in between something big so it won't tip over.

I've read some complaints about the drop at the end of the slide. Yea, there is one, but I think it depends on the child how they handle it. My 1 1/2 year old doesn't seem bothered by it. You can always slip a little pillow underneath to help.

Our only safety concern was the ladder, and this was when we first bought it 8 months ago. Our baby wasn't yet a year and so we'd have to watch her carefully when she climbed up. All in all, this has been one of our better large toy purchases. I'm pleasantly surprised at how much use our kids have gotten out of it!

The slide itself works just fine. There is literally only one step (repeated on each side) to set up the slide. This step entails screwing the triangular fixtures on the base of the ladder. Neither of my triangles had predrilled holes which was somewhat of a nuisance to fix. I don't want to pay almostfor an imperfect unit.

EDIT (5/15/10): After waiting on the phone for about 20 minutes, I spoke with a customer service representative that told me that as of 2/10, they stopped pre-drilling holes due to the liability created when/if a child eats the shavings produced by the drill. I ended up taking a nail with a diameter less than the provided screws and tapped it through the thin layer of plastic to create holes. The screws then went on without a problem. Neither I nor the customer service representative could figure out why this wouldn't be pointed out in the manual. Hopefully they will change it soon.

We purchased this slide for our 3 year old daughters birthday. The weather here can be really unpredictable and the winters are cold and snow filled so we wanted to give our daughter a place to play when the weather was to nasty to be outside and the slide is her favorite part of the playground. The slide was extremely easy to set up and only required a few screws to hold the stabilizing feet in place. In less then 5 minutes it was set up and my daughter was happily sliding. The slide is very sturdy and doesn't wobble at all. We've had the slide for a couple of months and she's still playing on it every day. This slide is big enough that my daughter still has several more good years of play before she out grows it. We've had several Step2 products over the years (I have an 8 year old too) and I've yet to be disappointed in their products. If your kiddo loves to slide then buying this slide will be money well spent.

Update to review: It's been several years now and this slide is still going strong. We decided to keep it indoors to give my daughter something to play on when the weather is bad. We have a park very close to our house that we use on nice days. My daughters almost 6 and still plays on it a lot. She's kind of on the petite size, she only weighs 36 pounds.

Playmobil Family Camper by Playmobil

Playmobil Family Camper by PlaymobilIt's a house, it's a vehicle, it comes with a lot of cool accessories. And it's the biggest hit of the three Playmobil sets my daughter received this Christmas. She loves this little camper, and who wouldn't?

The camper itself is well-laid out, complete with a mini-kitchen with a sink, a diner-style booth inside the camper and a versatile outdoor folding table with four folding chairs, and a tiny bathroom containing a tiny toilet. This little RV has everything a dollhouse has on smaller scale and with a theme that doesn't embrace either gender, making it the perfect toy for both girls and boys. There are four mat-like beds that affix to different parts of the camper. The mom and dad's beds sit over the cabin area, while the children's beds are in the rear, and can be lifted away to access storage compartments for the dishes and various foodstuff that come with the set. There is more storage in the rear of the vehicle, which can be accessed through a door that lifts up, and is perfect for storing the outdoor furniture and the bikes (there is one adult and one child-size bike). More storage is included in a removable compartment on the top of the vehicle, making this a more travel-friendly set than many of the Playmobil sets we own. All of the pieces can be stashed away, leaving you with a vehicle you can pick up and take along with you.

When the removable roof is attached a pull-out awning provides shade for the family's outdoor activities, and there is a door for the people to go in and out of the living quarters. The doors to the cabin are stationary and do not open, so in order to place a person in the driver's seat or passenger seat the roof must be removed.

Assembly is a piece of cake, especially compared to the Unicorn Fairy Palace we also received this Christmas. Set up for the RV consists pretty much of snapping the wheels together, clicking them onto the vehicle, inserting the toilet seat and booth table, and a couple other little odds and ends, but the bottom line is it probably takes 15 minutes if even that. The finished camper rolls smoothly, despite not having an axle, and only requires a little push to glide across the floor. Its wheels are realistic looking and have rubber tires that grip the floor to give it more momentum.

It does have a lot of pieces, and if you're new to Playmobil this may seem like an unpleasant surprise. These pieces can quickly get out of hand once you've acquired multiple sets. If you have a preschooler who is easily overwhelmed by clean-up, and no method for the madness, it can seem an annoyance not worth the entertainment value of the toy. Our daughter has one (large) rug in her room designated as her 'small toys' play area, because when we allowed to take this stuff everywhere, we were finding spoons and forks in her bed, and the people's removed hair under her dresser, etc.

We've set up a system where each set's small pieces are contained in a labeled plastic food container the cheap ones you buy at the grocery store. These are stored on the top shelf of her closet, and brought out, one at a time, upon request. She has to exchange one cleaned-up set if she would like to play with another. This is especially helpful if you have younger kids and need to keep the small parts away from them. It's a system that has worked very well, and it gives my daughter incentive to do the clean-up herself when she wants to play with something else.

I'm in total agreement with the majority of other reviewers on this set. I think it's the greatest. From the accessories, to the versatility, to all the fun little hiding places (I just loved 'secret compartments' as a kid) it's just a great deal of fun.

I would, however, be wary of prices charged here, as I've seen people asking double and even ten times the MSRP on very common Playmobil sets that *have not been retired.* I would always recommend checking the Playmobil site for the MSRP to be sure that you're not being ripped off by an unscrupulous seller.

Also, for those concerned with country of origin, this set is not made in China.

My children (ages 3-10) all love playing with Playmobil, so we are always on the lookout for a good value buy. This camper is wonderful. There are many, many accessories, the roof can be removed to use the inside, there is an openable section on the top of the roof, and there is plenty to keep the kids busy. The inside of the camper is well stocked with beds, a kitchenette, and more. The level of realism and attention to detail is remarkable. It comes with a picnic table and chairs that can be played with separate with other arraingements. As with many Playmobil items, the play experience has a lot of flexablity, which really makes it a creative experience for the kids.

My kids and I are thrilled with this camper. It's so cute, and has lots of accessories. My 4 yr old plays with it all the time. I highly recommend it. Only downside is that there are lots of small parts, little knives, forks etc. My son is good about keeping it together but it takes a little care not to loose the little pieces.

I bought these to use for placing over some of my drawings to give them special effects like using the light blue to give the impression the scene was under water. These have a shiny side and a duller side, so they were perfect for my needs.

I began my quest for the perfect colored paper because I figured it would be easier for my very young son to color on a stiffer paper. I first tried this Tru-Ray Sulphite Construction Paper. It is actually decent paper with the white actually looking like white. The paper quality is also better and smoother than many cheaper brands of construction paper. I should mention that it is 9x12 paper and so a little larger than "standard". Definitely not a minus, but it is something to take note of.

Unfortunately, I decided that I would prefer something a little more stiff than its 76lb weight (personal decision and definitely nothing against the Tru-Ray paper) and so have since tried the Wausau Exact Index Cardstock , 110 lb, 8.5 x 11 Inches, 5 Color Pastel Assortment, 250 Sheets (48990). This Wausau 110lb was my second attempt and I have found a winner. This paper is as thick as a thin, store-bought card. I think the colors are also less bright and more rich than they seem in the Amazon image (which is a plus to me). The quality is also excellent with the paper being very smooth (even smoother than the Tru-Ray).

If you are looking for nice construction paper I recommend this Tru-Ray. If, like me, you are looking for something a little thicker then I would definitely recommend looking up the Wausau cardstock.

Well, it's construction paper for sure. Quality seems good, colors are bright. What else is there to say? It does seem fairly smooth compared to some brands I've used in the past. Would probably buy again.

Monster High - Table Decorating Kit Party Accessory

I purchased this from a local store. When I pulled it out of the sealed package, it was missing the stand and the little hearts. Also, it comes flat but when I opened it up for display, several areas had stuck together and ruined areas of the display. The two little heart pieces don't stand on their own you have to tape them open.In all, it wasn't worth the price of purchase, even if it had arrived complete.

Kids Only Crayola 4-in-1 Craft Center

Kids Only Crayola 4-in-1 Craft CenterWe got this table and chairs as a last minute Christmas gift for our 2 and 4 year old children. So far we're pretty pleased with it.We're always worried about how things will hold up to the wear and tear of our children, but this one seems like it will last pretty well. The table top is plastic, but it seems sturdy enough to hold up to some abuse. The metal table legs and chair frames are very solid, and I have no real fear of bending or breaking. The chair seats and backs are also more than adequate for our young children.

As may be the case with others, my four year old son was standing and jumping on one of the chairs within about 12 seconds of us setting it up.After instructing him on the proper combinations of body parts and chairs, I took a look at the chair to see if there was any damage. There was absolutely no sign of distress.Another nice thing I found was that the chairs have a locking mechanism to keep them from accidentally folding up on little fingers or standing legs. The locking mechanism is also heavy enough to meet its need but didn't cause a problem for adults to clean things up.

The table top area seems pretty well arranged for small children. The four rectangular work areas are slightly depressed. One of the work areas on each side has a spring loaded metal clip to hold paper/coloring books/etc. in place. The one complaint I have about this table is that when the child is working with larger media, such as over sized paper for finger paints, that the clip is situated too close to the edge or gets in the way.I guess you can't have everything.

The table top also seems to clean up easily. We haven't found anything yet that doesn't wipe off the plastic easily. The vinyl seat covers also look like easy cleaning.Perhaps when we work up to some thicker, pourable paint we'll find some hard to clean crevices, but so far it's been fine.

I don't really believe that the table and chairs have much inherent educational value, but at least they don't get in the way of the educational experiences that happen on the table top.

To summarize, our kids have been enjoying the table and chairs for several weeks now with no problems and we expect that to be the case for quite some time.

This is my second purchase for the crayola table. I had purchase one a year ago to stay at my house for my grand kids. They enjoyed it so much that I purchased a second table so the girls could have one at their home to enjoy!Great product!!!

Step2 Play Up Teeter Totter

Step2 Play Up Teeter TotterFirst, I would like to say for a plastic teeter totter this is a VERY well made one.

We purchased this for our 21 month old and 3 year old daughters for xmas. We wanted them to be able to also use it indoors and get exercise being cooped inside during some winter days. It has no spring action and is run solely on the children's legs and momentum. But, please be aware that it is really designed for more of a 3+ year old and probably should be used by 2 of the same size or age children preferably. We have had a couple major falls(onto playroom carpet luckily)before I had to put it away for now. When one child is at the bottom, the other child, especially if they are smaller, are at the very top. And, it is a steep top so unless they have the strength and know how to hold on very tight, they will fall completely head first over the teeter totter as you would over the handle bars of a bike.

This is worth the money and great for use both indoors and outdoors but be aware of the sizes of children using it at same time.

Bought this for two preschoolers. It's a bit small for kids over 3 or 4 yrs old.Very easy to put together. Both kids went over the handgrips once when they first got on.. even with us trying desperately to hold their hands to the handgrips. No one was hurt badly but they hold on now like we showed them to. Overall not a bad toy......pretty good but definitely for kids younger than 4....3 if they are above average in height.

Twist and Shout Multiplication

Twist and Shout MultiplicationMy daughter is finding it a little hard to learn her multiplication tables. After reading such wonderful reviews from others i deciding to buy this. I am glad i did! At first she wasnt to happy to find this under the christmas tree but after she started using it she discovered she liked it! It gives a choice on answers & when she picked the right one it made her very happy. She loves to win & is learning at the same time. She can not wait to take this to school to share with the class.

I bought this for my son who was having a lot of trouble remembering his multiplication facts. He is typically a good student. When he was in fifth grade he was getting poor marks in math due to not knowing his facts. We tried flash cards, games, nothing helped. When he first got this he would want to play with it on his own, which was great. After he got bored with it I would encourage him use it, which he did. After just a few months he learned his facts by heart! What a painless and fun way to learn something so dull, yet vital. I think this is a great learning toy.

Simpsons Chess Set with Laminated Wood Board

Simpsons Chess Set with Laminated Wood BoardThis is an excellent gift idea for anybody! This chess set is definitely gets an A+ for fun! Even if you're not a Simpson's fan or haven't heard much about them, this set wonderfully symbolizes the intelligence of the family. Homer is crowned with a beer in his hand while Marge stands taller than the king himself with a rose close to her chest. There is Bart as the bishop, Lisa as the rook, Krusty as the knight, and Maggie portrayed as the pawn. I am surprised, however, that Flanders was not the Bishop. Afterall, he is the holiest of people, the most spiritual to spirits, and the most faithful of all God's faithless souls!

I was asked to rank this toy on an educational level and I gave it four stars. I did so because it is a game of chess. Simply, chess is an educational game that increases your sense of logic and reasoning. Although it is the Simpson's that we are talking about, the fact that if a person can play well with these peices without mixing them up with confusion, then I think you've accomplished something. Skill. As with any chess pieces that are represented by other characters or symbols, you obtain a good sense of awareness and strategy.

This toy is a very fun toy and I would reccommend it to anyone, ESPECIALLY if they enjoy watching the Simpson's. It is fun to play, fun to watch, and fun to display. Friends should definitely be impressed with this chess set!

Box got a little wrinkled, but the contents of the status was great.

Butterfly SCS-2000 Shakehand Racket

Butterfly SCS-2000 Shakehand RacketThis is a nice paddle for someone whose game has advanced beyond the basic "Gnip-Gnop" of the recreational player. Two issues.. the player needs to know what their strengths and weaknesses are before spending this much on a paddle. The Butterfly SCS-4000 is the same price, with different characteristics.Paddles are rated according to Speed, Spin, and Control. Before buying, play enough so the rating numbers mean something to you.Secondly, the edges are sharp where the hand comes into contact with the sides of the paddle itself. All it would take is to have them slightly rounded to increase the comfort of the player.I had to take some fine grit sand paper to the paddle to correct the problem.I would expect a less quality paddle to have the sharp edges, but for a more expensive item, it wouldn't take much to correct it at the factory.
